Small, quaint, and CLOSE to the beach! (4 1/2 Stars)

4 of 5
The little lavender house near the beach was perfect for this dad and his 9 year old. It's well kept, and the open floor plan makes it feel quite spacious for its size. Very comfortable. There's not a lot of extras, so bring your own or rent beach chairs, beach towels, umbrellas, etc (but that's fairly well disclosed in the descriptions). The good news is the house is so close to the beach, you can be there in 5 minutes! Which also means, you can run home for snacks or extra supplies/beach gear quite conveniently. The owner was very quick to respond to any questions or problems. We texted her because we were running early, and she double checked that the house was ready and gave us the code to get in before actual check in time. We were in the ocean 30 minutes before the 4:00pm check in! I had to take off a whole star because there's no half stars for just a couple picky things that I felt would have improved the experience: first there was no outdoor shower or hose to rinse off sand at the house. There's one at the shared pool, but it was out of service (according to the neighbors). Having even a hose at the house for our feet would have cut down on the daily sweepings to keep up with all of the tracked-in sand. We never did use the Sea Retreat shared pool, so I can't comment, but it looked nice and well maintained. The other super picky complaint, and not necessarily the owner's fault, was the lack of kitchen supplies like foil, matches, or condiments...again not something required, but oh so handy when they are there. I made sure to leave extra TP, paper towels, ketchup, mustard, foil, and sandwich bags for the next guest. I guess that's more of a thing I expect a good guest to do. Anyway, this house was about as perfect for our trip as I could have imagined. It's close to stores, restaurants, and of course the beach. The cozy size was suitable for the 2 of us, but it would probably be nice for a family of 4. The kitchen is separated from the living room by a counter with stools, so no one need be left out of a movie, board game, or conversation while they are fixing meals. The beds were comfortable and they had plenty of pillows. The A/Cs combined with fans kept the temps in the comfort range. I'd definitely rent again.

Great location/needs updating

4 of 5
Rating Details: The property manager was very helpful. The vacation rental was very clean. I was very happy with the location. I was satisfied with the condition of the vacation rental. Overall, I recommend this vacation rental. Reviewer Comments: This is our 2nd year staying in obx. We wanted to be close to beach but still with a pool so this house was perfect with only 1 street to cross. There were a couple flaws though. The beds are so uncomfortable!! They are very soft (which some people like, I know) but they have this crackly mattress cover that cannot be removed. I understand why some people would like to protect the mattresses, but they make a better product. Every movement you made on the bed could be heard throughout the house! All of the bedspreads and shams need to just be replaced. They had stains and were very worn. Nice to have a television in each room, but controls seemed a bit wonky (but why watch tv when you have the beach!) The kitchen was very nice but the cabinets are beginning to peel. It wasn't visible, but when I opened one up it was starting. One of the cabinets was actually broken but someone came to fix promptly. All kitchen items were there. The back right bedroom light would not turn on; that could just have been a lightbulb issue. When I first used the washing machine it didn't work and I had to call it in. I did feel like an idiot bc I was told that it takes a good 5 minutes for the water to start pumping in. He was correct- I just wish there had been a notice so I didn't have to waste the repairman's time. The cleaning done prior to our stay was ok- there were some stains that I was able to wipe up quickly but nothing nasty. Like I stated before, I love the location but the bedding and some of the furniture need to be replaced.
