"After both seeing the outside and touring the inside of Shrimp N' Grits, we booked the house for our July family vacation. There are five in our immediate family, plus my father, and several of my kids' friends who tagged along with us for the week. After reading the negative review below, we were worried about what we would find when we arrived for our traditional week at the beach.
What we found was a wonderfully laid-out, family-oriented, comfortable home that was neat and clean. While it is not a brand-new home, it has been renovated and kept up-to-date -- it even has hardwood floors! The views from and location of the house on the second row are perfect. We loved that it was on the more quiet and less populated (=less traffic!) side of Holden Beach. Based on the very reasonable price, we knew it would not be the Ritz, realistically expecting and desiring an "it's okay to sit around in your bathing suit" type of home.
In short, we were comfortable having fun at this house -- eating as a family on the back porch in the evenings, drinking coffee on the front porch in the mornings, swinging on the downstairs porch swing in the afternoons. It was a very short across-the-street walk to the beach. We rode rented bikes, put our fishing boat in the intracoastal waterway at the end of the street, ate at the local restaurants, played Putt Putt, walked on the beach at night, got in a little shopping here and there, rented jet skis one day, went to an outdoors concert on Sunday, and walked and walked on the beautiful beach.
Shrimp N'Grits was the headquarters for all these wonderful and memory-making events. In fact, we enjoyed ourselves tremendously and plan on booking again for next year. Our family agreed the house is exactly as advertised: "Family Retreat" at the beach!"
