  • Purple and Gold

"We stayed at Bare Necessities the weekend of our son's graduation from Western Carolina University. The purple and gold colors of WCU were on display on campus and at sunset from the deck of Bare Necessities. You cannot capture the long-range views in a photo. We could still see the snow atop Clingman's Dome over 30 miles away. The hot tub was a welcome retreat after a couple of busy days packing up a moving van and attending the graduation festivities. The cabin comfortably slept 5 adults with an air mattress we took with us. The upstairs shower had a tough time keeping water pressure when someone was in the shower downstairs but we just staggered our bathroom visits to accommodate. There are so many outdoor activities in the surrounding area but my favorite was driving up Barker's Creek Rd, turning onto Beech Tree Rd and driving until it turns into a National Forestry dirt road. This drive is quintessential Western Carolina with family farms, mountain views and beautiful creeks. We fished for native trout in the middle fork of Barker's Creek and hardly noticed the hour that waned away in the middle of a hectic weekend. We can't wait to return in the fall."

  • Authentic pioneer log cabin secluded in enchanted forest of 200 foot tall trees.

"We thoroughly enjoyed the vacation we spent in Lazy Bear Lodge. This is a very special authentic pioneer log cabin completely secluded in an enchanted forest of 200 foot tall trees. The only person we saw in 11 days at the cabin was the gentleman who picked up the garbage. Yet the cabin is conveniently located in a charming neighborhood minutes from gas, groceries and downtown Sylva. We especially enjoyed drinking coffee on the front porch watching the morning fog while listening to the birds sing while the butterflies fluttered in the cool breezes. We loved the glow of the gas fireplace. The hot tub under the giant trees was phenomenal. We will treasure our memories forever of our special time in this storybook lodge."

  • Adorable old house

"Cute renovated old house with large fenced yard. The house & location were great, a/c, appliances, wi-fi worked well. Loved the Smokehouse across the street. Got take out three times. Dog and I loved the front porch watching everything go by. Need to CAUTION anyone renting from VRBO that the house is not easily accessible to anyone not physically fit. Parking is way up on a hill necessitating a climb down stone & wooden steps to the house. Hubby is 80 & I am 73, needless to say it was difficult to get our things to and from the house. Owner uses a realtor whom we called for assistance however their machine stated that they were away for the weekend so we were left on our own."

  • Nice spot for the price

"This location is about as good as you'll ever find if you like the river and being close to the towns and attractions in the area. This property is nicely secluded and has a very long river-frontage that allows a nice walk and plenty of fish-able spots from the bank. We even saw some of the local wildlife throughout our stay. It's only 15 to 20 minutes up to Cherokee and great streams. About the same to Sylva and further south; pretty close to Waynesville as well. It's a bit small, but still a great value at the $132 per night. Sadly, after adding in all the fees and taxes, the 2-night price almost doubled the cost for our stay. I guess the motto here is..... just to stay longer. Hot tub was in great shape, great decks overlooking the river, and beds were good as well. Kitchen is small but adequate - no dishwasher except the manual kind. And no doubt, it is a real mountain cabin with easy access to the main road and local spots. Our cell-service was actually good enough to send & receive texts with no problem - AT&T."
