  • Great place to enjoy the best of the region

"Shannon really wants you to enjoy your stay at River Mist Retreat, and that is apparent from the welcome phone call, gift of s'more ingredients that encourage you to use the fire pit, and the well-supplied and equipped house. The setting is magnificent and very private, yet very close to the town of Fries. There really was river mist our first morning we were there, providing some dramatic photo opportunities. We especially enjoyed relaxing in the hammocks. Our dog Ruby was in heaven, immediately jumping into the river for a swim upon our arrival and enjoying all kinds of interesting smells on the banks and in the woods."

  • Incredible Getaway

"The cabin was beautiful inside and out and well maintained; loved everything about it. Judy was very accommodating despite our late arrival. We enjoyed our stay and had an opportunity to attend a concert at the Blue Ridge Music Center and visit Andy Griffith Museum in Mount Airy North Carolina. We'll definitely love to come back."

  • Lovely dog-friendly get away

"The cabin was cozy, clean, and well-appointed. My dogs, Domino and Scrappy enjoyed the open space to run and explore. We walked a few miles on the New River Trail each morning -- really breathtaking -- and I kayaked in the afternoon, taking in the wildlife and mountain scenery. The cabin was just a couple miles from both, with multiple access points to both the trail and the river. Evenings I read on the front porch swing while the dogs played and watched the neighbor cut, turn, and bale hay across the little valley. Temps in the low 80's during the days and mid 60's at night in Mid-September made for a perfect vacation. Be aware, if you are dependent on your smart phones, that e-mail and internet access didn't work in this hollow, but I was able to make calls and message on my Verizon service. I was able to connect with the cabin wifi for the first day, but was then blocked because the bill hadn't been paid. I almost marked down one star for that, but decided it was a blessing in disguise that I couldn't respond to work e-mail. We'll be back"

  • Perfection

"Our weekend at the cottage was absolute perfection. This property was the most beautiful location I have ever seen. We thought we would do what we usually do when we visit the Blue Ridge-- leave the property early to hike and explore, coming home mostly to sleep. Instead we found ourselves leaving only to pick up a few supplies we forgot to pack; the rest of our weekend was spent hiking the property that Theresa and Brian so generously make available to guests, playing in the stream, relaxing in the hammock, visiting an adjacent farm, where Farmer Gary very generously entertained our boys with a horseback ride (and an attempted pig ride, which I think made them happier than anything we have ever done!) and digging in the garden with Theresa. Have you ever eaten a dinner of potatoes you just dug up and pork chops from the source? We have! Theresa was beyond generous with letting the boys help in the garden, and our dogs and boys so enjoyed roaming the pastures. The cottage itself is perfectly quaint and cozy, with a little gas stove, porches with amazing views, and very comfortable beds. Every little touch was perfect. We are counting the days until the cottage reopens in April, and we are eager to try the glamping site as well. You know you've stumbled on a VRBO jackpot when you come home and immediately devote a line-item in your monthly budget to future cottage rentals!"
