  • Peaceful spacious house steps from the Shenandoah River

"My friends and I were looking for a comfy house on the river for a weekend trip and Shenandoah Stars was exactly that. The house is large and comfortable, clean, and modern. Most of our time was spent in the screened back porch, a nice covered space with a table, large grill, and hot tub. We didn't make a fire or use the hot tub. We enjoyed sitting on the stones by the river, watching fireflies in the evening and the view of the stars. We swam in the river during the day. We couldn't get the canoe padlock opened--it was stuck--but our host came right away and unlocked it. Super responsive. The house is close to Luray, which is convenient for an excursion to the caverns."

  • Beautiful home in the perfect location!

"Gorgeous home in perfect proximity to hiking the Little Devil's Stairs, far enough from civilization to be remote without feeling cut off. The hosts were very accommodating (and pet friendly), leaving us a lovely bottle of wine in the fridge and allowing a late check in. The owners were unable to meet us for check in, but their daughter made sure we were settled."

  • Clean, Nice, Out of the Way

"Maggie's Cottage is probably the cleanest VRBO/rental home I've ever stayed in. Extremely well maintained and very well stocked. We were just there for one night with one other couple for a wedding, so we didn't get to enjoy all of the amenities, but it worked OK for us. The downsides are: it is very out of the way. This may be an upside for some people, but for us - driving down a one mile gravel road every time we needed to get to the wedding site over two days was a bit much. It also would have helped to have had some sort of wifi since we had NO cell service at the cottage. Again, some people may consider this an upside, but we needed directions and communication for the wedding, so it was a bit tough. The other downside: the water was very, very smelly. I'm assuming it's well water and it's extremely sulfuric. The sulfur smell was so strong, that the other couple wouldn't even shower there the next morning, and it made me rush through my shower in a few minutes. I don't think I saw other people complaining about this in the reviews, so maybe it was a fluke the weekend we stayed there, but I would recommend some sort of water filtration system be put on the house to avoid that in the future. We grew up on and currently live on well water, so I'm aware of the kinds of smells and tastes it can have, which is why we have a saline filtration system on our home! Otherwise, though, a very nice place for an out-of-the-way stay - especially if you want to be off the grid!"

  • Refreshing Family Get-a-Way

"Our family of 5 stayed at Sweetwater in the month of July and it was everything we hoped for and more! Prior to arriving our communication with Jan excellent (within a day) and pleasant. The cottage was clean, beds and futons comfortable for sleeping, kitchen well supplied and the views from house and screened porch were beautiful! After kayaking 12 miles of the river, we decided Sweetwater had the best location on the river. We could see layers of mountains in both directions when standing on the edge of the river and floating in it. We enjoyed relaxing in the hammocks, floating in the tubes and cooking in the fire pit. We also enjoyed a drive on the Skyline Drive and rode the zip lines at the Shenandoah St. Park about 40 minutes away. The Sweetwater grounds were quiet and peaceful - perfect for relaxing and getting away from the city!"
