  • Sibling Reunion

"We returned home yesterday, all of us exhausted. Lets just say that while inside - no one was ready to leave, but doing outside activities - the heat was too much for some. Our group ranged from mid 50's to late 60's and I think we chose the hottest time of the year. The water views from both inside and out were fantastic but the jelly fish prevented us from attempting to float or swim. We all enjoyed the trip to Tangier Island and marveled at their way of life which we enjoyed from our bikes (we arrived early and our bikes were quickly boarded) and golf carts rented on the island. Suggestion, Sunday is not the best day to visit the island as a lot of shops and restaurants were closed). We visited KC Crab and Cue - where the guys had a great time playing pool and the girls got away to do some local shopping and visit the Dog and Oyster Winery where we had a fantastic personal tasting. We walked Hughllet Point Preserve until it got tooooo hot and it looked like the tide was coming in. We had a fantastic meal at Merrior's Restaurant, outoors!! (beautiful waterfront setting) We saw Reedsville from the car and were given more information while on the ferry boat to Tangier. Loved how the Caption on the boat had a sense of humor and played the music from the Titantic Theme song "My Heart Will Go On" at "appropriate" times on this trip :) Lunch at the Crazy Crab, right on the water in Reedsville served a really good meal. Your place was beautiful, comfortable and we all enjoyed ourselves. Thanks again for sharing your vacation home!!"

  • Great way to spend New Years with friends!

"We had an excellent time in the very cosy and well equipped house on the river! It is very isolated and the hot tub under the stars by the river on a cold winter's night is beyond compare. The kitchen had basically everything we needed to make an elaborate New Year's Eve meal. The hot tub definitely has a highly concentrated chlorine content so do be careful not to oversoak, and make sure you rinse off and moisturize afterwards - and don't wear silver jewelry! It will oxidize. We loved our time here and hope to come back - perhaps at a time when we can boat around the Shenandoah and see the little town when it is open! The local convenience/country store is adorable and well run...and was open with longer hours than many of the local shops! There is also a Food Lion about 10 minutes away in Elkton that is really well stocked with anything you might need or have forgotten. Happy 2017!"

  • One of our favorite vacation spots!

"Our family of five including three teenagers adored this cozy little cottage on the James River, right next to the ferry that takes you across to Jamestown, Yorktown and Colonial Williamsburg. We arrived Sunday afternoon, previewed the historic attractions nearby, bought firewood for the pit out on the private beach, and a few groceries. Thanks to the fully functional kitchen with all of the pots, pans, flatware, utensils and complete variety of cooking equipment just like home, we were able to cook all of our own meals, which was perfect for us because my wife has Celiac disease and it is too risky to dine out. The view of the river from the dining table on the back porch was wonderful. We even made S'mores over the fire pit on the beach to end our first evening, and watched a couple of the classic movies from the owner's collection. On Monday, we tried the three kayaks provided by the owner in the very shallow and calm water near the pier, cooked shish kebabs on the like new Weber gas grill, and went over to Williamsburg for the Ghosts Among Us tour. On Tuesday, we drove the 90 minutes or so to Virginia Beach where we spent hours boogie boarding, bodysurfing and diving through waves. We had a full day at the beach but were back at the cottage in plenty of time to grill steaks, and do some late night fishing off the pier with the rods and tackle provided by the owner, and bait from the convenience store in Surry. I caught (and released) a catfish roughly two hands long, and we spotted dozens of fish leaping right out of the water throughout our stay. Wednesday, we spent touring Jamestown and the Yorktown battlefield, and then we went back to the cottage for some evening kayaking, before having a big meal of various leftovers before doing some initial packing for home. On Thursday we cleared out of the cottage in the morning and spent the day at Colonial Williamsburg, before driving home. One of our best vacations ever! We left rested and refreshed and with a lot of cherished memories. Friends on social media had wonderful things to say about the cottage, the view and all of the amenities from the photos we shared. We would stay here again in a heartbeat!"
