  • Cozy, well-appointed retreat in the woods

"My husband and I stayed at Heron's Roost for 5 days celebrating our anniversary. The place was as described - the cabin is cozy, well-appointed and very clean. The landscaping is beautifully done incorporating native plantings in a clearing in the woods. There are a couple of homes close by - the owners live on the 5 acre property - but there is complete privacy on the cabin area and the woods conceal the nearby homes. It does have a "retreat" feel, and we enjoyed the fire pit and hanging out in the gazebo in the evenings. We went down to the beach a couple of times. It is a little precarious going down there, but well worth it. The kitchen is well stocked (though a dutch oven for steaming the local mussels would be a nice addition - but I cook way more than most people). It's super-quiet and dark at night. The location is a great base for exploring the island - 15 minutes to Langley, 30 minutes to Coupeville. We hiked in all the parks - the South Whidbey State Park was particularly delightful with it's giant trees, heard some music at DjangoFest, and had some excellent brunches in both Langley and Coupeville. I would recommend this property to others wanting a peaceful place to stay on Whidbey."

  • Stay as long as you can!

"We stayed at Rising Moon Beach House for a month in 2014. But that was not enough, so we returned for a month in 2015, and then for two months in 2016. And we could return again and again. The beautiful location, comfortable amenities and gracious hosts make this our best vacation rental ever. The view from the two decks and every window of the house could entertain us for hours. A bald eagle that lived in the neighborhood came by several times each day. While there is a great new TV in the living room, we almost never turned it on; the views of Puget Sound, Seattle, the Cascades and Mount Rainier were much more interesting. At night, we saw a full moon rising over Seattle and a meteor shower. When we could tear ourselves away from the house, we took walks to nearby Rolling Bay and Manitou Beach. The garden at Rolling Bay Café is a great place to relax and enjoy a coffee or cold drink. Rolling Bay’s Italian café, Via Rosa, has now expanded to a full service pasta and pizza restaurant and it is excellent. A short drive (or a more ambitious walk) took us to Winslow for a first-rate grocery store, more restaurant options, and Mora Ice Cream, which was worth the trip in itself. Day trips in the car included Port Townsend, with a gorgeous beach and terrific farmers market, and Olympic National Park (the hikes at Hurricane Ridge are breathtaking). And we enjoyed visiting friends and family and experiencing Seattle and the beautiful half-hour ferry ride that takes us there. Al and Kathy are great hosts. They respect your privacy, but they are fun and interesting to talk to when you get a chance. Each year they have added new things to make the house better and better. This year there was a new TV, new washing machine and dryer, a coffee table and great new lounging chairs on the deck (reclining in the lounge chairs is perfect for star gazing). Enjoying all these experiences takes time. I strongly recommend that you visit Rising Moon for as long as you can. You’ll want to experience what Bainbridge Island and the Kitsap and Olympic Peninsulas have to offer, and also have time to relax and enjoy the house. Stay at least a week, longer if you possibly can. You’ll be glad you did."

  • Indianola Delight

"Henderson Guest House is comfy with eclectic, interesting furnishings and just right for a home away from home. It fits right in with the rural, beachy Indianola setting. Beach access is nearby and even a few places have no steps, but that takes a bit of discovery skill. All in all a great place to stay."
