  • Perfect Spot for Family Fun

"My sisters and our families spent a second Thanksgiving here-- what a great place to spend time together and enjoy the outdoors. Beautiful river frontage (we spotted an otter family swimming down the river!) and lots of outdoor games (cornhole, croquet, etc.) for all ages. We were so impressed that the owners had taken feedback from last year about a baby gate for the loft room and built a beautiful stair-guard! Everyone slept easy and went to bed tired! The owners put up 3-4 long folding tables in the sunroom so we could spread out our Thanksgiving spread-- that helped us maximize space and keep the kitchen tidy! If you're thinking about vacationing here-- book now-- you've found a true gem in a beautiful spot. Thanks so much for sharing your space with us!!"

  • Surrounded by nature

"We stayed 4 nights and wished we had more time to spend. Enjoyed our morning cup of coffee and evenings after dinner on the large screened in porch. Deer ran through the yard 2 mornings. Easy walk down to the greenbrier river trail. The accommodations were clean and comfortable. Look forward to having the opportunity to stay again. Margaret Lopez"

  • Another perfect stay at Woodpecker Cottage

"This was our second visit and like the first, we were thrilled. Despite new ownership, the cottage remained unchanged, which is what we had hoped for. I would be fibbing if I said this was everyone's cup of tea - it's very rustic, a little ramshackle in nature, and just the kind of crooked little place that we love. Tall people or families requiring more than one bathroom would struggle. We don't. Everything about it is charming, from the large stone fireplace, the original kitchen sink, the bbq pit out back (which we used to cook a hearty beef stew in a dutch oven all day Sunday), the porch which overlooks the spacious front yard and of course - the stream, the babbling, noisy, beautiful stream! We did the same things we did last time.... we rode into Paint Bank for a Buffalo Burger, walked around the Fish Hatchery, drove to Covington to hike the Jackson River Scenic Trail, and then came back to a glass of wine by the outdoor fire, and then by the indoor fire! (it was chilly!). I really couldn't find anything negative to say, except for maybe we could have used some better firewood, but then that's as much our job as anyone else's and we were the last guests for the season, so undoubtedly were using old wood. It wasn't a big deal, we brought some of our own, and truly, most places don't offer it, so I cannot really complain. I just know how much we burn, and it is probably an unusually large amount, compared to most! We LIVE by the fireside. The appliances are new and modern for an old house. Full size refrigerator, brand new coffeemaker, nice pots and pans.... everything you need to cook. We cook a lot.... so these things are important to us. The bathroom is old and quaint, with a shower over the claw-foot tub, but the water is hot, with good pressure, so no complaints there, especially with new fluffy white bath towels to use! Upstairs bedroom that we used was very comfortable. Last year we slept with the door/window open, this year we didn't. When it's warm enough to be open, the stream will lull you into a perfect sleep! The bedding is all new, warm. Most importantly, the cottage is spotless. Everything is kept beautifully by Deb (owner) and Libby (Housekeeper, nearby) and it's so reassuring to know we can walk into an immaculate "home" for a few days. We cannot wait until next October, and we miss the stream, the farm-house, the beautiful surroundings, already. Again, a perfect stay. Thank you."

  • Thanksgiving in WSS

"House was so pretty and well appointed. We all loved it. The beautiful xmas tree really got me in the mood for the holidays. Bedrooms were beautifully decorated. Hard wood floors throughout were so pretty. A lot of the furniture and flooring seemed new and we wondered if the flood affected this wonderful property. If so, you did a great job with the renovation work. wonderful. We loved the upgraded kitchen although did not love the motion sensor faucet, at all. Also some complaints about mattress in front room (not the biggest front room) being too soft.) House was very clean! Extras such as water, juice, condiments, even biscuits were greatly appreciated and the kitchen had everything we needed. Location was great in middle of town and close to Greenbrier which we enjoyed. All in all a wonderful home for thanksgiving with family. Would be great if fireplace worked but not a big deal. Thanks very much! and happy holidays!"
