  • Comfortable and content, but unexpectedly off the grid and a few other downsides

"We had a lovely stay at Merrymeeting Lodge during the week between Christmas and New Year's. The house is very comfortable and homey for families with kids. It's casual and spacious in a pretty spot with a view of woods, fields and the lake. The layout of the house is fun with a neat 3rd floor. The washing machine got rave reviews, and some furniture pieces are lovely. Overall, I would recommend staying here, but there were a few downsides There were a few key down sides: 1) Biggest would be the lack of an Internet connection or cell phone service. This wasn't clear from the VRBO listing. We saw a WiFi signal in the house but it seemed to be related to the TV and there were no passwords available. We checked with the MountainTop Realty rental office (which manages the house) and they said "if this house had Internet, we would know about it." This was especially troublesome for our teenage guest, but also made figuring out what to do more challenging. We couldn't check the weather or ski reports, or the hours or costs of attractions, and we missed a couple phone calls we would have liked to have received (we had both Sprint and AT&T phones with us). Going off the grid completely can be good, but in this day and age, you should BE WARNED first. 2) One other downside is that the fireplace is smokey. There was a fan/blower connected to the flue, and we tried with and without, but we couldn't prevent the smoke. 3) We saw a mouse in the house 4) It was a bit expensive. Between two families the price was okay, but for one, and given that t's totally off the grid (except for TV and Radio) it's a little high. 5) The VRBO listing doesn't show photos of all the bedrooms, so we had to go on faith that they were all okay (they were!) 6) The furniture could use an update/reconfiguration. One long couch crowds out the entrance to an otherwise lovely stair case. If the owner gets WiFi, cleans the fireplace flu, catches the mice, and updates some living room furniture, we'd definitely go back (despite the lack of cell phone coverage)."

  • Great time at Snowshoe and Mt. Lodge

"The condo is very neat and clean. Everything is available in the condo whether you want to cook all your meals or just relax and enjoy your stay. There are 2 nice bedrooms, 2 televisions which makes it easy when you have kids wanting to watch different shows and 2 bathrooms which makes it really nice when getting ready to enjoy the mountain. Mt. Lodge is an easy walk to the village but doesn't have the price associated with staying in the village. Great condo for sure. We will be back!!!"
