  • Loved it!

"A quiet location. The home is beautiful and the kitchen was a delight to work in. We liked the home because it was large enough to accommodate a larger group, but had plenty of smaller spaces so that you could have privacy, too. We also rented a pontoon for the week to enjoy the beautiful, clean lake. We saw plenty of wildlife, including seeing eagles dropping in for fish in the bay in front of the cabin. We can't wait to return."

  • A Great Week Was Had By All!

"Our family of 5 adults and dog spent a week at the Spider Lake cabin in mid-June 2016. As others have said, the pictures don't do the cabin justice. The very private setting is perfect for relaxing on land and lake. There are also lots of ways to expend as much energy as you want as well. Some of our folks said they felt they were staying in a tree-house. We heard the ATVs only a few times and generally things were very quiet. The house is very well stocked with all sorts of necessities and extras, such as dishware and other kitchen supplies, linens and towels, comfort seating and table seating throughout, power outlets everywhere, some great DVDs, candles, flashlights, and more. Some of the things we especially liked were all the swim toys, paddle boat, kayaks, hummingbird feeders, books/brochures on birds, lakes, and area attractions, ceiling fans, hooks everywhere, plenty of hot water, calls of the loons, fire pit and more. Despite my advanced age, I had my first authentic S'more at the fire pit - fantastic! There's a special rack of S'more supplies at Gary's Grocery in Birchwood. We had great luck with a couple of meals out - lunch on the deck at the Hungry Minnow in Birchwood, the Friday fish fry at Prop's on Long Lake (ate outside on a night with a beautiful sunset), and lunch at Angler’s in Hayward. In terms of wildlife we saw many deer (be very alert when driving), a bald eagle, turtles, loons, hummingbirds, orioles, and something like a muskrat. We heard tons of birds and on a couple of occasions an apparent pack of wolves (very far away!). The cabin had a limited supply of bug spray - be sure to bring some - the biggest annoyances were mosquitos and flies. The water level on the Spider Lake chain was great. We were able to kayak from the cabin (lake #1) all of the way to lake #5. On a calm day, it's a relatively easy trek. Was one of the best things we did all week. We found the Marketplace Foods grocery in Rice Lake to be excellent (there is one in Hayward as well). The adjacent liquor store has everything you could want - loads of craft beers. There's a good vet in Rice Lake if you need one (Rice Lake Animal Hospital). The owner was very responsive to all our questions - responding in less than a day on all counts. The property is very clean and we highly recommend it to others."

  • Perfect place to take our grandchildren.

"The house had everything we needed for the weeks stay. The sleeping arrangements were great and the kids loved the area between the two bedrooms in the loft when they were told they needed to come in out of the sun for awhile. The kitchen had everything we needed and the extra refrigerator in the garage was a blessing since three families coming together from different parts of the country came prepared with way too much food. The beach and dock were great for all ages (5 to 66). We swan, fished, walked, biked, pontooned and relaxed. One son-in-law golfed 4 different golf courses. He was the only one who really left the property. The wildlife was amazing. An eagle spent one whole morning in a tree on the property. We also saw deer, great blue herons, leopard frogs, Ospreys, and more. Kayaking was wonderful as was the use of the pontoon. There was no real need to leave the property during the week. Coffee on the deck in the morning, grilling some really wonderful brats from Louie's Meats in Cumberland, s'mores down by the fire pit. It was just perfect, a vacation no one in our family will forget. Friday morning as we prepared to leave I heard my 12 year old granddaughter say, while hugging the post in the kitchen "I love you cabin!""

  • Fun in the Northwoods

"We spent a week here in late June. We had 4 adults and 3 kids age 17, 15, and 5. We had a wonderful time. The house met our needs beautifully. We had good fishing, good hiking/exploring and it's an easy trip into Hayward. We brought yard games such as bags & badminton and had fires most nights. The fish cleaning station in the garage was great. The fishing was a highlight. We rented a canoe & brought kayaks & a fishing boat to complete our fun. The owners were easy to contact & the neighbors were helpful. A huge storm blew in 5 minutes after half our party arrived. The other half arrived during the storm. There were downed trees (this is where the neighbors came in) across the road that had to be sawed/moved before we could all get TO the cabin. We were without power off & on for a couple days (along with a lot of the area). We still had a great time. We were able to get a generator from the owners so we could run the fridge & charge our phones. The house was large enough to suit all our needs & give us together time or time apart as needed. We cooked, BBQ'd and ate out. The screen porch was a huge asset & there were great lake breezes. We would suggest bringing measuring spoons & measuring cups if you plan to do any scratch cooking. Almost everything else was there. We thoroughly enjoyed the loons, ospreys, bald eagles, herons & otters. We even saw a bear in the neighborhood! Our only complaint with the cabin would be that the listing hasn't been updated recently. There is no longer a sandy beach area as shown in the pictures. That area is now over grown & the area right along the dock is not a spot we were comfortable using for swimming due to the bottom, grasses & water lilys. The dock/boardwalk access needs to be raised so that shallow wading is not required to reach the shore. We bought rubber boots & it was no longer an issue of wet feet. We're sure some of it was from the rain but it also appears the lake level has risen and the board walk has settled since the listing was made. We'd be at 5 Stars except for the discrepancy between the listed beach & the reality of it."
