  • Incredible!

"We just returned from a week-long visit to this magnificent compound with our six kids, ages 5-15. Oh my... what an absolute treat! The house is perfectly remodeled, the kitchen had everything we needed, the grounds are just incredible and FUN , and we had such a blast in the pool and on the lake. Thank you so much, Colleen, for a truly wonderful week of beautiful family time!!!"

  • Perfect escape for families or writers

"We spent a delightful week at this lovely lake house in early August. A phenomenal book collection and artwork from around Asia give this old Victorian a lot of character and charm. Yet, the place isn’t so fancy or fragile that you’re worried about having kids visit. The caretaker was responsive, super friendly and gave great recommendations. (Elegant Farmer, a short drive from here, has the best apple pie I’ve ever tasted!) My young kids caught panfish and bass off the pier every day. The water there is clear and shallow enough that you can see the fish eyeing the bait. We rented kayaks and explored the lake. On our next trip we hope to paddle all the way to Lake Lulu, a no-wake DNR lake that's supposed to be gorgeous. For those who prefer swimming in pools to lakes, there’s a wonderful newer YMCA nearby in Mukwonago that has a zero-depth-entry pool and a waterslide -- much nicer facilities than the Ys we have in the Chicago area. One of my favorite parts of the trip was seeing all the cranes. We hear their distinctive calls when they migrate overhead in the spring. Now we know where these magnificent birds spend their summers. On our last morning as we packed up, a crane stood on the pier, the brilliant red feathers on its head shining in the sun. A perfect end to a perfect trip! We’re already planning our next visit. p.s. This would make a great writer’s retreat in any season. There's strong wifi and three distinct spaces for writing. The library is surrounded on three sides with windows overlooking the woods. The screened porch overlooks the lake, and the dining room has long table with plenty of room to spread out your notes. You’re in a serene setting, surrounded by books, not far from coffee shops, and there's no TV to distract you."

  • Beautiful, relaxing farmhouse in a peaceful setting

"We had such a lovely experience at Ann's home, which is an easy hour and 45 mins from Chicago. Ann was super accommodating of our slightly earlier arrival time, and responded fairly quickly on email. The house is clean, nicely updated, comfy and laid out well for a group of four (plus one lively toddler and two dogs!). We were able to spread out and immediately feel at home. There were clear instructions detailing how everything works in the house. The kitchen was well-stocked with cooking supplies and (sharp! hooray!) knives. The Wi-Fi signal wasn't great, but we honestly welcomed the opportunity to unplug a bit and just enjoy the quiet, peaceful surrounds. We loved the screened-in porch when it got a bit buggy at night, and the dogs loved the huge, fenced-in yard. Note: I also saw several hummingbirds up close early in the morning while I was having coffee on the steps. There's a great fire pit out back for s'mores with a big rolling yard, which was great for kicking the soccer ball around over a few chilled Spotted Cows. And these four 30-somethings were all super excited to take a couple jumps on the trampoline. :) If you're a hiker or cycler, I'd highly recommend staying in this area--there are beautiful and easily accessible trails all around. Meat lovers, I'd recommend Wilson Farm Meats for FABULOUS bacon, sausages and steaks, and Rushing Waters Fisheries for super fresh-caught rainbow trout. All in all, we loved our stay, and we absolutely hope to come back! Thanks for a terrific weekend getaway, Ann! -Maggie"
