Charming cottage with beach right on Champagne Pond! For those lucky enough to have stayed in the Beach Lots community of Kapoho, you know there are only 6 homes that front the very popular Champagne Pond, and this is one of them! Walk out the lanai, climb the ladder into the crystal-clear inlet in front of the cottage, and swim out with the turtles to the large part of Champagne Pond. For those who haven’t yet experienced Champagne Pond, it’s a huge geothermally heated warm pond, with incredible snorkeling in calm warm waters with sea turtles and colorful tropical fish.
But wait! There’s also a white sand beach! A rare find in East Hawaii, but the owners of this cottage decided to build their own rock wall overlooking the pond and fill it up with that white sand that slips through your toes. Sunbathe away in sunny Kapoho while you relax on lounge chairs and feel that ocean breeze.
It’s not just about location at Champagne Pond Cottage. This truly charming two-bedroom cottage was built in 1957 by James and Mildred Kuwana. It survived the 1960 lava flow that covered Kapoho. Mr. Kuwana and another long-time resident had the lava flow dredged to create what is known today as Champagne Pond. The home was refurbished in 1994 and just recently upgraded with a new kitchen and bath, complete with granite countertops and beautiful windows.
The cute kitchen is well equipped with refrigerator, stove, dishwasher, microwave, coffeemaker, coffee grinder, toaster, blender, rice cooker, pots and pans, cutlery, dishes, and there is a full-size washer and dryer. (The kitchen has no conventional oven but there is a charcoal BBQ on the lanai.) Windows surround the kitchen on three sides to bring in the view.
Ohia wood floors grace the living area, which has comfortable seating, a flat-screen satellite TV with a gazillion channels including CD-quality commercial-free music stations, and a DVD player. There is a workspace but at this time high-speed Internet access is not available. The outdoor lanai serves as the main dining area with a picnic table overlooking the pond.
The cottage can sleep 6 in its two bedrooms. The master bedroom has a queen bed and the second bedroom has 2 sets of bunk beds meaning there are 4 single beds in this room. The bedrooms are small but work well for a family.
Champagne Pond Cottage offers a glimpse into an old Hawaii home, with upgraded features and a location you will never forget!

- Champagne Pond Cottage is located about 25 miles south of Hilo in Kapoho, one of the most popular vacation areas on the Hilo side of the Big Island, with spectacular swimming and snorkeling right in front of the property. Ahalanui State Park (thermally heated warm pond) is less than 10 minutes away. Nearby activities: sunrise and sunset hikes on the lava fields, steam vents - a maze of short trails leading to natural lava steam rooms, Kalani Oceanside Retreat featuring a low-chlorine Olympic pool and cafe open daily, Laakea Permaculture Gardens. Pahoa Town, about 10 miles away, has eclectic shops and restaurants. Full-day trips: Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden (one of the best in Hawaii), Akaka Falls, Waipio Valley, Hawaii Volcanoes National Park (a journey you will never forget).
