Michael and Maebh Bird (nee McKeon) conceived the idea for Slemish Barn after Maebh tried to host a group of young musicians from Donegal in the area on an exchange trip with the Counties Antrim and Derry Country Fiddlers who she is chairperson of and realised there was no such facility in the area. We opened the building in July 2014 and have hosted a huge number of guests over the past 5 years. Maebh still works as a music teacher in Belfast as well as continuing her music work in the community with the Fiddlers who provide tuition for up to 100 young (and older) people. Michael also worked as a teacher, and latterly a manager, in the Behaviour Service of the Education Authority for 20 years before taking early retirement in Dec 2018.
