Hale Mahina, meaning house of the moon, is conveniently located about two miles south past the entrance to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park in the Volcano Golf Course and Country Club Division. It is nestled among the Ohia trees in one of the worlds most beautiful forests. Enjoy the crisp mountain air at the crest of the sunny side of Volcano.
This cozy 2 bedroom, 2 bath home is built in the Plantation Cottage style with an open floor plan.
Rooms are large, comfortable and clean, and our fully equipped kitchen allows you to cook in. Area farmers markets daily in Hilo and Sundays Open Market at Volcano offer produce at its best along with island crafts. Think fresh papaya every morning. The Volcano Winery is 539 steps away from the house where you can view the vineyards and enjoy wine tastings. If you choose not to cook in, Volcano Village has several restaurants serving lunch and dinner and there are also two small country grocery stores. ATM's are available here.
The Volcano Golf Course is a beautiful 18 hole course in the view of Mauna Loa (13,680') with the clubhouse restaurant serving breakfast and lunch.
Hawaii Volcanoes National Park offers a visitors center to guide you through the vastness of this incredible National Park. Daily volcano activity is available here for day and night viewing. Tour by car or walk/hike the miles of trails while hearing the songs of the native forest birds. You will learn about our local active Volcano, Kilauea at Jagger Museum.
Sea Mountain Golf Course and Punalu'u Black Sand Beach, where you might see Green sea turtles, is a beautiful 35 minute drive. Hilo is a 45 minute drive where you will find waterfalls, shopping, beaches and Botanical Gardens.
The area also has several exceptional art galleries which shouldn't be missed.
As cocktail hour approaches, watch from your lanai as the sun sets behind Mauna Loa, while the colorful neighborhood kalij pheasants scurry to their night time nests. As the cool night air descends upon the village, snuggle up to the warmth of the gas log fire place. Do venture out after dark to see the stars on our back deck or take a hike in the park to see the latest lava activity. You certainly won't be disappointed.
Frank is originally from Hilo Hawaii and Cheryl from Minnesota. We purchased our home in Volcano 2007 and plan to use it as a retirement retreat in the future. We love the solitude of the area.
Cheryl Nathaniel purchased this house in 2007
Frank and I have lived in HOT climates all of our 40+ years of marriage and were looking for a mild climate where a jacket can be worn. We have lived in places where high 90's or triple digit temps aren't unusual. Volcano fits the bill exactly plus as a artist/quilter I find it a perfect place to create.
The peace and quiet of Hale Mahina Cottage and having a home to entertain our family and friends while we are visiting the Big Island of Hawai'i.
This is a review sent via our email in regards to our cottage -she asked me to post it for her.
"What a wonderful place to stay in Volcano for a week!!!. We wished we had been at Hale Mahina Cottage for a much longer time. But we'll come back for sure. Our son from Honolulu came over for a weekend. He was - as well as we were - fascinated by the amenities, above all the electric blankets and the good working fireplace. So nice to enjoy the cool nights and a cozy breakfast room in the morning. We loved to watch the apapane in the Ohia tree while having our meals.
All rooms were very well equipped and decorated and impeccably clean. We admired the wonderful quilts giving the house a unique Hawaiian touch
Another reason for a MUST - RETURN is the location. It's so quiet and only some minutes away from the Halemaumau crator. A must-see in the evening when glowing."
A perfect bungalow in paradise. Well maintained and setup. Cheryl and Frank thought of everything you might need and more. The grounds are pretty even in January. Fireplace was much needed in the evenings and to take the chill off in the morning. 44 one morning! The location was prefect for everything we wanted to do. Hiking in the park in the morning to snorkeling in Hilo in the afternoon. Visit the Volcano Winery for an evening tasting. Get groceries before you leave Hilo! It's a long round trip if you don't! The local store has basics but not a ton. O'helo is a nice place to eat, but make reservations! This would be a place I'd stay forever. Can't wait to come back again!
We have stayed at many VRBO rentals over the years, and this is one of the cleanest, well kept rentals we have experienced. The house is perfectly maintained and is well stocked. It is easy to tell that the owners take a personal interest in making the place shine for their guests. The fireplace in the living room does a great job of taking away the morning chill. The location is fantastic -- you can actually walk to the winery and the park is very close. We've stayed in Volcano twice before, but this will be where we return to next time we visit.
This cottage was amazing! Super clean; plenty of room for our family (including teenagers!) We loved how close we were to Volcano National Park, and Volcano Winery! Owner was extremely prompt in responding to our questions and very helpful with information on what to do and see! Looking forward to our next vacation here!!
Stayed here in July 2016 (sorry for the tardy review). Our travel plans were disrupted by a tropical storm. However, Cheryl and Frank were able to accommodate or last minute decision (literally a same day booking) to still try to visit Volcano NP after we arrived on the Big Island.
So glad we went, and what a great place this is! We wish we had more time here than just the one day we had. Cozy and comfortable, with plenty of space and all the comforts of home (and more). If you are staying in Volcano you must stay here. You will not be disappointed. Thank you, Cheryl and Frank!
Cheryl was quick in responding our emails and her instructions were clear once we booked the cottage.
The cottage is located in a quiet neighborhood and plenty of space for a family of 5 with kids. We were so glad the cottage has wall heaters, heated mattress and a fireplace when we were there in December. I highly recommend this place.
Very convenient, clean and quiet bungalow just minutes away from the entrance to VNP.We stayed for three nights which was just enough for us to see the park.If you plan to eat in,be sure to get your groceries in Hilo as there are few groceries to speak of near VNP.Our family of 4 fit in just perfectly in this very homey residence.
Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is just a 3 mile drive from the House as well as Volcano Village Shops and restaurants. Punalu'u Black Sand Beach with occasional turtles, is a 35 minute drive from the house and 45 minute drive to Hilo, where you will find Beaches, shopping and Botanical Gardens.
