About the property

2 bedroom, 2 bath (sleeps 5)

Hale Mahina, meaning house of the moon, is conveniently located about two miles south past the entrance to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park in the Volcano Golf Course and Country Club Division. It is nestled among the Ohia trees in one of the worlds most beautiful forests. Enjoy the crisp mountain air at the crest of the sunny side of Volcano.

This cozy 2 bedroom, 2 bath home is built in the Plantation Cottage style with an open floor plan.

Rooms are large, comfortable and clean, and our fully equipped kitchen allows you to cook in. Area farmers markets daily in Hilo and Sundays Open Market at Volcano offer produce at its best along with island crafts. Think fresh papaya every morning. The Volcano Winery is 539 steps away from the house where you can view the vineyards and enjoy wine tastings. If you choose not to cook in, Volcano Village has several restaurants serving lunch and dinner and there are also two small country grocery stores. ATM's are available here.

The Volcano Golf Course is a beautiful 18 hole course in the view of Mauna Loa (13,680') with the clubhouse restaurant serving breakfast and lunch.

Hawaii Volcanoes National Park offers a visitors center to guide you through the vastness of this incredible National Park. Daily volcano activity is available here for day and night viewing. Tour by car or walk/hike the miles of trails while hearing the songs of the native forest birds. You will learn about our local active Volcano, Kilauea at Jagger Museum.

Sea Mountain Golf Course and Punalu'u Black Sand Beach, where you might see Green sea turtles, is a beautiful 35 minute drive. Hilo is a 45 minute drive where you will find waterfalls, shopping, beaches and Botanical Gardens.

The area also has several exceptional art galleries which shouldn't be missed.

As cocktail hour approaches, watch from your lanai as the sun sets behind Mauna Loa, while the colorful neighborhood kalij pheasants scurry to their night time nests. As the cool night air descends upon the village, snuggle up to the warmth of the gas log fire place. Do venture out after dark to see the stars on our back deck or take a hike in the park to see the latest lava activity. You certainly won't be disappointed.

About Cheryl Nathaniel

Frank is originally from Hilo Hawaii and Cheryl from Minnesota. We purchased our home in Volcano 2007 and plan to use it as a retirement retreat in the future. We love the solitude of the area.

Cheryl Nathaniel purchased this house in 2007

Why Cheryl Nathaniel chose Volcano

Frank and I have lived in HOT climates all of our 40+ years of marriage and were looking for a mild climate where a jacket can be worn. We have lived in places where high 90's or triple digit temps aren't unusual. Volcano fits the bill exactly plus as a artist/quilter I find it a perfect place to create.

What makes this house unique

The peace and quiet of Hale Mahina Cottage and having a home to entertain our family and friends while we are visiting the Big Island of Hawai'i.

Guestbook comments from the owner

This is a review sent via our email in regards to our cottage -she asked me to post it for her.

"What a wonderful place to stay in Volcano for a week!!!. We wished we had been at Hale Mahina Cottage for a much longer time. But we'll come back for sure. Our son from Honolulu came over for a weekend. He was - as well as we were - fascinated by the amenities, above all the electric blankets and the good working fireplace. So nice to enjoy the cool nights and a cozy breakfast room in the morning. We loved to watch the apapane in the Ohia tree while having our meals.

All rooms were very well equipped and decorated and impeccably clean. We admired the wonderful quilts giving the house a unique Hawaiian touch

Another reason for a MUST - RETURN is the location. It's so quiet and only some minutes away from the Halemaumau crator. A must-see in the evening when glowing."

This is a wonderful house that is kitted out with all of the ammentities and then some.

My husband and I spent a week in Hale Mahina and absolutely loved it. It is the most well stocked rented house we have stayed in and is spacious and comfortable. It was just two of us, but we were imagining coming back with friends. The open plan living room and kitchen is great and we enjoyed having breakfast in the sun on the back patio. The carport is also a plus if you end up coming home in a rainstorm! The proximity to the national park makes it great for evening volcano viewing. Also highly recommended if you are going to do the long hike to the lava on the National Park side and want to come back to somewhere nearby afterwards. The hike is gruelling - being able to get to bed quickly is fantastic. Basically, you can't go wrong with this house and it is really good for those who want to stay longer and settle in.

Very comfortable and cozy for two adult couples

  • 5 of 5

This cozy and affordable 2-bed, 2-bath home was just right for the four of us. The home was clean and nicely decorated with comfy beds and heaters in each bedroom. We had a bit of stormy weather while there and so the heaters, as well as electric blankets were just right to keep the chill in check. The gas fireplace really warmed the living room right up and added to the overall ambiance as we gathered to watch the Winter Olympic games! Despite the weather, we enjoyed our stay in Volcanoes, as we always do. We found our "temporary home" well cared for both in and out (the front and back yards were beautifully maintained and added to our overall enjoyment). We would definitely stay at this home again!

We have stayed in several home rentals in volcano over the years and this is by far the best one.

  • 5 of 5

Our stay in this charming two bedroom home was wonderful. The property is well laid out with two bathrooms and a central well stocked kitchen, dining area and big room with a gas fireplace that was very much appreciated on the cool evening and morning!

The property is in the dryer side with and the interior is very well maintained with no sign of mold. The owners are very nice to work with and have provided a well labeled instructions on how to operate everything. The WiFi is very fast as we were able to run our personal ROKU player on the TV.

We highly recommend!

We're Home!

  • 5 of 5

Hale Mahina is a beautiful cozy cottage in the volcano rainforest with all the amenities of home. Cheryl even made a quilt for the master bedroom that is the same one in our bedroom. The home is super clean, has a wonderful fresh smell, house slippers for the cold evenings, a fireplace that is user friendly, a dish of candy greeted us on the island, stocked kitchen...etc. What more can I say that would be different from all other reviews? This is our second visit and will not be our last. Mahalo also to Cilla who is the property manager and cleaner upper.

Fabulous Cottage

  • 5 of 5

Stayed at this cottage for two nights and wish we stayed longer. It is the cutest cottage and the most well equipped place that we have ever stayed. It is true Hawaiian and we loved every minute. Cheryl must truly love this place as it is immaculate. Our main purpose staying here was to be close to the volcano and we were not disappointed. Within a short drive we were already at the volcano. We stayed there the entire day. The best viewing was at night where you see all the red from the volcano and the stars were so close you could almost touch them. If we ever come back to this area this is the only place we would even think about staying. Loved, loved, loved it.
