Overview

About the property

2 bedroom, 2 bath (sleeps 5)

Hale Mahina, meaning house of the moon, is conveniently located about two miles south past the entrance to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park in the Volcano Golf Course and Country Club Division. It is nestled among the Ohia trees in one of the worlds most beautiful forests. Enjoy the crisp mountain air at the crest of the sunny side of Volcano.

This cozy 2 bedroom, 2 bath home is built in the Plantation Cottage style with an open floor plan.

Rooms are large, comfortable and clean, and our fully equipped kitchen allows you to cook in. Area farmers markets daily in Hilo and Sundays Open Market at Volcano offer produce at its best along with island crafts. Think fresh papaya every morning. The Volcano Winery is 539 steps away from the house where you can view the vineyards and enjoy wine tastings. If you choose not to cook in, Volcano Village has several restaurants serving lunch and dinner and there are also two small country grocery stores. ATM's are available here.

The Volcano Golf Course is a beautiful 18 hole course in the view of Mauna Loa (13,680') with the clubhouse restaurant serving breakfast and lunch.

Hawaii Volcanoes National Park offers a visitors center to guide you through the vastness of this incredible National Park. Daily volcano activity is available here for day and night viewing. Tour by car or walk/hike the miles of trails while hearing the songs of the native forest birds. You will learn about our local active Volcano, Kilauea at Jagger Museum.

Sea Mountain Golf Course and Punalu'u Black Sand Beach, where you might see Green sea turtles, is a beautiful 35 minute drive. Hilo is a 45 minute drive where you will find waterfalls, shopping, beaches and Botanical Gardens.

The area also has several exceptional art galleries which shouldn't be missed.

As cocktail hour approaches, watch from your lanai as the sun sets behind Mauna Loa, while the colorful neighborhood kalij pheasants scurry to their night time nests. As the cool night air descends upon the village, snuggle up to the warmth of the gas log fire place. Do venture out after dark to see the stars on our back deck or take a hike in the park to see the latest lava activity. You certainly won't be disappointed.

About Cheryl Nathaniel

Frank is originally from Hilo Hawaii and Cheryl from Minnesota. We purchased our home in Volcano 2007 and plan to use it as a retirement retreat in the future. We love the solitude of the area.

Cheryl Nathaniel purchased this house in 2007

Why Cheryl Nathaniel chose Volcano

Frank and I have lived in HOT climates all of our 40+ years of marriage and were looking for a mild climate where a jacket can be worn. We have lived in places where high 90's or triple digit temps aren't unusual. Volcano fits the bill exactly plus as a artist/quilter I find it a perfect place to create.

What makes this house unique

The peace and quiet of Hale Mahina Cottage and having a home to entertain our family and friends while we are visiting the Big Island of Hawai'i.

Guestbook comments from the owner

This is a review sent via our email in regards to our cottage -she asked me to post it for her.

"What a wonderful place to stay in Volcano for a week!!!. We wished we had been at Hale Mahina Cottage for a much longer time. But we'll come back for sure. Our son from Honolulu came over for a weekend. He was - as well as we were - fascinated by the amenities, above all the electric blankets and the good working fireplace. So nice to enjoy the cool nights and a cozy breakfast room in the morning. We loved to watch the apapane in the Ohia tree while having our meals.

All rooms were very well equipped and decorated and impeccably clean. We admired the wonderful quilts giving the house a unique Hawaiian touch

Another reason for a MUST - RETURN is the location. It's so quiet and only some minutes away from the Halemaumau crator. A must-see in the evening when glowing."

This is a wonderful house that is kitted out with all of the ammentities and then some.

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I spent a week in Hale Mahina and absolutely loved it. It is the most well stocked rented house we have stayed in and is spacious and comfortable. It was just two of us, but we were imagining coming back with friends. The open plan living room and kitchen is great and we enjoyed having breakfast in the sun on the back patio. The carport is also a plus if you end up coming home in a rainstorm! The proximity to the national park makes it great for evening volcano viewing. Also highly recommended if you are going to do the long hike to the lava on the National Park side and want to come back to somewhere nearby afterwards. The hike is gruelling - being able to get to bed quickly is fantastic. Basically, you can't go wrong with this house and it is really good for those who want to stay longer and settle in.

Comfortable and equipped

  • 5 of 5

This was our second stay at Hale Mahina. We love the location, just two miles from Volcano National Park and walking distance to Volcano Winery. The house is so comfortable for two couples. Extremely clean and the kitchen is well equipped. We enjoyed the movie collection and were lucky enough with the weather to enjoy reading on the front porch. I highly recommend this property and am looking forward to our next stay.

Great house close to VNP

  • 5 of 5

This location was perfect for a stay in the Volcano area to see the sights. The house is very well decorated and has everything needed for a short or longer visit. We wished that would could have stayed longer to spend more time exploring this area of the island and enjoy more time in your cozy home with all its amenities. Mahalo!

Wonderful stay!!

  • 5 of 5

I am so glad I decided to stay near Volcano and not try to see everything at the National Park on a day trip and Hale Mahina Cottage was a wonderful place to stay. The cottage is spotless, comfortable, cozy and was perfect. The beds were comfortable and it had everything we needed. It is very chilly there in January but the house warmed up nicely each evening and the electric blankets made it nice to sleep without turning on the heaters in the bedrooms.

I would suggest to everyone to spend a couple nights near Volcano NP and make sure you see the glow of the volcano at night and the stars!!

I recommend Hale Mahina Cottage...we had a wonderful stay!!

Great property, exactly as advertised!

  • 5 of 5

When I saw this property with all 5 star ratings, I figured it was too good to be true! But, it was Great! Comfortable, roomy, great location for seeing the Volcano National Park and black sand beach! Only problem was coming in at night and not realizing there were 3 streets with the same name! Once we called and got help finding it, we were very pleased! Also, be aware that it is cold here in January! But with the fireplace and electric blankets, we stayed cozy! We would definitely stay here again if visiting the big island!

This is a great place to get away. We went to the park and did a hike and then checked out the art gallery. The next day we went golfing.
