Space 1,200 sq. ft.
Property type house
Minimum Stay 2 - 3 nights

About the property

House, 2 Bedrooms + Convertible sofa bed for 2, 2 Baths, (Sleeps 4-6)

Casa de los Mosaicos (House of Tiles) is located on a quiet street between two parks in the centre of Merida, Parques Santa Lucia and Santiago. It is literally four blocks to the main square, called the Plaza Grande or Zocalo. Here you can watch the world go by, sit in the traditional confidantes (chairs), eat ice cream in the shaded passageways around the square, and enjoy the artisans stalls set up on weekends when the centro is closed to traffic. Walk easily to nearby shops, museums and restaurants. And at night, watch the salsa dancing in the parks and maybe even give it a whirl yourself!

All our rooms have high beamed ceilings typical of these old colonial houses, with both mini-split air conditioners and ceiling fans. The kitchen and bathrooms have been lovingly renovated with modern fixtures and appliances, all centered around a courtyard with a plunge swimming pool and a rooftop deck... a great place for an outdoor breakfast or glass of wine while watching the sunset. And because this is the perfect Merida vacation rental, it even has a garage for your car! Look no further, Casa de Los Mosaicos is the perfect vacation home in Merida Mexico!

Where is this beautiful house, you might ask? Well, it is located in a very good neighborhood in the Centro Historico of Merida, which is the capital of the State of Yucatan in Mexico. Yucatan is one of three states on the Yucatan Peninsula. Merida is the largest city on the peninsula, and has been here for over 1000 years. The city is three hours west (by car) of Cancun, and a million miles away culturally. Merida was an important Mayan city before the Spaniards came to Mexico. Then it became an important colonial city... the Spaniards tore down the Mayan temples and used the stones to build the soaring Catholic cathedral (the oldest in Latin America) that graces the town square, or Plaza Grande.

Merida's weather is called tropical desert. This means it is hot and humid in the summertime, but warm and lovely in the winter months (about October to March). There are two rainy seasons: one in the late summer months, and one in the early part of the calendar year. Whenever it rains, it's usually just a shower that dissipates quickly, leaving a lovely clean city for you to enjoy.

The city of Merida houses more than a million souls, but you'd never know it... it is so tranquil, relaxed, friendly and safe. Walking around the downtown area, you'll feel as if you've gone back in time and are walking around a small colonial town. There are many cultural events to enjoy that are free, as well as restaurants, bars, coffee shops, museums, shops, a zoo, movie theaters, a symphony, galleries, parks and much more... all within walking distance of Casa de Los Mosaicos!

About Jane Galton and Clive Bruton

Jane and Clive are British and have been travelling since we were born, Jane in Malta and Clive in Montevideo. From then on we travelled the world separately - Jane to Malaysia, Singapore, New Zealand and the US, Clive to Spain, India, Iran, Kuwait, Greece and Peru. We got together in 1989 and just kept travelling, to Oman, Nigeria and in 2002 to Mexico City, where we spent 5 very happy years. This is where we fell in love with Mexico so decided to buy somewhere permanent before returning to live in London, UK. Merida was the place of choice for many obvious reasons!

Jane is passionate about animals and animal conservation, while Clive is passionate (Jane would say obsessional!!) about fishing! But we also love travelling, going to the movies and the theatre, and taking in the odd pop/rock concert!

Clive has recently retired after working for over 30 years for an organisation called The British Council, and Jane has also just recently retired, but is staying very busy with charitable pursuits, mostly related to animals.

Jane Galton and Clive Bruton purchased this house in 2005

Why Jane Galton and Clive Bruton chose Merida

We moved to Mexico City in 2002 and fell in love with the country and its people, and in particular with Merida and its Mayan history and culture, which is still so alive and such an integral part of life here.

After so many years spent travelling, usually to warm places, Jane and Clive don't really do winters any more!! So we were looking for somewhere warm to escape to when the nights began to draw in in London, which is where we now spend a large part of our time. And Merida certainly fits that bill!

What makes this house unique

We love the beautiful old features of our house, the exquisite old tiles (we're told they are originally from Italy), the high high ceilinged rooms with their beams.

And we love being in the centre of the city, so that we can more or less walk everywhere and enjoy all the amenities that Merida has to offer without having to get into a car. One of our treats is to wander in to the centre to one of our favourite cafes for a leisurely Mexican breakfast, delicious! Or wander down to the Zocalo for a delicious home made coconut ice-cream!

But we also have our own garage (which is such a boon in Merida, where parking can be a problem) so we can jump into our car and head off to the beach at Progresso or a little further afield to the Caribbean coast if we want to.

And there is some wonderful saltwater fly fishing (remember that Clive is passionate about fishing?!) to be had in a number of spots quite close to Merida - Campeche, Rio Lagartos, Progreso, San Felipe, Holbox.

Guestbook comments from the manager

Casa de Los Mosaicos is a lovely house and a great place to make your Merida base. It is located very centrally, only a short walk to the main square, and near many restaurants, bars and shops. From Merida we were able to take several day trips to the surrounding historic and natural sights.

The house was spacious and comfortable, and very well equipped, and the courtyard with plunge pool was pleasant in the afternoons.

We would be more than happy to stay here again, and recommend a stay!

Casa de los Mosaicos has beautiful old tiled floors in every room - hence the name of the house - and high beamed ceilings, typical of old colonial houses in Merida. Each room has some beautiful antique Yucatecan furniture mixed with the new for comfortable living. The light fixtures are made by a local Yucatecan ceramicist and the walls have interesting pieces of art from local artists as well as pieces from our international travels.

Wonderful Family Stay

  • 5 of 5

We recently stayed at this house with our four young daughters. Perfectly located near everything, we absolutely loved the tile work, the large rooms and plunge pool. We were very comfortable there and felt completely safe. The owner and management agency were so easy to work with and even recommended an excellent driver to drive us to Cancun after our stay. We felt that our family got to enjoy an authentic Yucatan stay at such a great price. We hope to return some day.

Great location at Merida's downtown. Our communication with Jane and Andy, the house administrator, was perfect. We had a great time and will love to come back soon.

A tranquil haven in the beautiful colonial quarter

  • 5 of 5

This was our second time in Casa los Mosaicos and it didn't disappoint. Beautifully situated for the main square, theatre, restaurants and day-to-day shopping, it nonetheless provides a tranquil and relaxing environment once you step through the stunningly refurbished wooden doors and into the cool of the high-ceilinged reception areas. (It is also a few yards from Pola, the best ice-cream house in Merida!). Despite the relatively small road frontage, this delightful casita is really spacious inside with two en-suites bedrooms, wifi, air conditioning and ceiling fans, a well-equipped kitchen, plenty of relaxing/entertaining space and a tranquil courtyard for those end-of-the-day G&Ts! It even has a garage, which is absolutely brilliant if you intend to hire a car. Communication with Clive and Jane (the owners) was straightforward and easy. If you are heading down to Merida, you MUST stay here!

Comfortable and central Colonial.

  • 5 of 5

The house is perfectly located for easy walking to all the cultural and historic sites in Merida. It is also 2 short blocks from Santa Lucia square which is the place to go for good restaurants and great people watching. The 2 bedroom property is very comfortable and well maintained with all modern appliances and air-conditioning which we didn't use much even though it was hot - the ceilings are so high we were fine just using the fans. The courtyard with plunge pool and loungers is a lovely spot to enjoy relaxing any time of the day or evening.

New Years trip to Yucatan

  • 5 of 5

The house was as advertised. Good location in in Centro. Walk to restaurants and museums.

We were primarily doing day trips to Mayan ruins, so having a garage for our car was a plus.

The local management people were outstanding.
