I grew up in North Dakota and moved to Connecticut in my 30s. I soon realized that I had come to a part of the country very different then where I grew up. I missed the down home hospitality and meeting new people. The vacation rental and B&B business (I also run a B&B) has given me the oportunity to meet many new friends.
Carol Matsumoto purchased this house in 1994
This home is next door to where I lived for nine years raising my children. I always thought that the home was special, an 18th century gem. When the oportunity to purchase it became available I went for it and the rest is history.
It sits on six acres of land. In the back of the property lies a 17th century cemetery. Our village was incorporated in 1687. The home is on the National Register of Historic Places. It is the grandest home in town; once owned by a ships Captain. It is not just a cabin or place to gather but an exceptional home that will become a part of your gathering memories.
We had a family reunion at this property and took it for five nights. We use all seven bedrooms. They all had bathrooms. This is hard to find. It was a bit expensive but when we got there we were totally surprised how gorgeous the propery was. It had things going for it that we hadn't had at other reunions. The billiard room with the big TV was great. We set up volley ball outside and a small pool for the kids. The kitchen can only be described as awesome. We cooked some meals on the large deck. The owners live next door and whenever we needed something (gas for the gril) they were right there to help us. They even found us a babsitter for one night! We will be back. It was worth every penny.
Nice large property with great character. Owners are nice and communicate quickly via email. Not often you can find a house with 5 bedrooms and 6 bathrooms. Big gathering rooms, nice game room with pool table, nice decks. Three suggestions: be sure to understand the difference between B&B and just renting the facility; many of the reviews of the property refer to the B&B amenities and it is easy to assume they are included, but they are not. The bath towels had a terrible moldy, mildew smell; I think they came from the laundry room basement and finally, the house was not really clean. Lots of dust on the ledges in the bedrooms and the flat areas around the beds. The house is still a project underway, with kitchen cabinets to be built. So, if you are looking for a large facility with character, this is it. The owners really need to fix the towel situation and be more clear during the rental process about the different options/costs available. The plumbing needs some work; some of the bathtub showers do not work well, dividing the water between the tub outlet and shower outlet.
