We are a professional couple with real jobs in the real world. Cedar Key is our 'getaway', our quiet place, our time together. We fell in love at Abaco, but are unable to fly back there often. Cedar Key is our new, only 2 hours away, romantic getaway.
Bob Cooper purchased this condo in 2005
We love Cedar Key. After visiting Cedar Key for over 15 years, we found the perfect property for us. Right in town, we can walk anywhere. We are directly on the back bayou for bird watching, and only steps to the open beach. Cedar Key has a vibrant arts community with many galleries to visit. A definite stop is the Aquaculture tour, you will see first hand how clams are farmed in our waters. The Lower Suwanee National Wildlife Refuge is just off the mainland, abundant flora and fauna can be observed in the 72,000 acres there.
Our condominium affords us the luxury of our second home, while allowing us the time to enjoy it.
Cedar Key is home to friendly people, small shops and some of Florida's best seafood.
Old Fenimore Mill has plenty of parking for our boat, and only two blocks to the public boat ramp. There is a small dock where we can tie up for those 'oh honey I forgot the extra sunblock', or when we know the tides are not quite to our timing.
Old Fenimore Mill has a pool, a spa, and plenty of boat parking. Only two blocks to anywhere, we can walk, stroll, amble, or if it is a really lazy day, we can rent a golf cart. We are one block to the City Park; our guests' children can enjoy the playground while we adults can sit in the shade of the pavilion. Bird watching only involves sitting up straight on the balcony; we are in the middle of the Cedar Keys National Bird Refuge.
I know how hard it is to try to make the best decision when selecting a vacation rental. I spend hours looking at everything that's available. I am so glad I chose this particular unit. Once we got to the Island, I scouted out all the other properties I had considered and confirmed that this was the best choice. I am a big fan of small details and the owner of this unit has provided many. The decor was exactly what you'd expect for a "Florida Beach Condo", plenty of extra pillows and cute throw blankets. An extensive selection of books. I haven't read "Travis McGee" in a very long time, perfect for this setting. My sister and I agreed that this unit, facing the tide pool was so much more interesting that just staring out into the vast sea. So much more to appreciate, and ever changing. My sister enjoyed painting with her watercolors from the back deck. The owner has provided lots of hooks for hanging clothes, towels, etc .
and plenty of storage. This location is a short walk to both "downtown" shops and "pier" shops and restaurants. We rented some bikes for the time we were there and either walked or biked most places. Pool is perfect for an afternoon dip. If you can get this unit, I highly recommend it!
Pros: Great location, close to restaurants and shops. Excellent view of tidal cove with mangroves and lots of birds. Very clean unit. Great private balcony. Comfortable king size bed. Comfortable sofa. Great wifi. Kitchen had new (but not nonstick) pots and pans, and while small, had everything we needed to cook the fresh local seafood we bought nearby at Cookes (highly recommend the stone crab claws and clams), Check-in was easy and friendly. We loved riding our bicycles (brought from home) all over the islands. Plenty of space under the unit for parking.
Cons: Kitchen and bathrooms could be updated. Too decorated with things on all the walls and in every nook and cranny. Towels are a little old and scratchy (now I'm being really picky). When the people in the unit above us arrived we could hear them - walking, moving chairs around, and on their deck above us (just something we're not used to). If your knees aren't good, you'll need to brace yourself to haul luggage etc up and down the stairs to the unit.
Bottom line - it met our needs and then some. We are birders and loved sitting on the deck to watch the roseate spoonbills, eagles, ibis, herons and egrets etc. We hope to return next year.
The 2 and 1 bedroom units we rented were nicely furnished and spacious. The 2-bedroom unit has a nice large balcony. The view was waterfront and beautiful. The property has a large parking area for trucks with boat trailers. There is a nice pool. Downtown Cedar Key is a nice hamlet and everything was within a short walking distance of the condos. The marina and boat ramps, and a children's park were a block away. Lots of nice restaurants and cafes.
This lovely condo over looked a tidal cove, which was filled with amazing bird watching. While we were there we had a flock of roseate spoonbills visit every day. We also saw bald eagles and dolphins frequently as well as more birds than we could keep up with.
The condo had everything we needed. The furniture was light and comfortable so when we couldn't sit out on the balcony we were quite cozy sitting in the living room looking out the windows. The air through the condo was delightful. We never used the AC. I think the only thing lacking were pool towels. Also, We're not used to apartment living so when we had upstair's neighbors it was an adjustment hearing their conversations and music.
The condo is in a great location. We walked everywhere and often after dinner we would stroll through town before going to bed.
The office was quite helpful with supplies, local information and bike rentals.
Cedar Key is a really neat area. Everyone was very friendly and all of the state parks and nature preserves nearby were fabulous.
We spent a happy two weeks here!
We were expecting a little lower quality accommodations because it was listed as pet-friendly, but were surprised by the stained carpet. If you charge a pet fee, use it to be sure the condo is clean even if it means replacing flooring. If a renter leaves this type of damage, charge them. Also, the kitchen supplies were disappointing. Pans need to be replaced when rusty and grease stained. Therewere only 3 tea glasses. The view was great, but needs condo some cleanup.
Cedar Key is the naturalist's delight! Untouched by towering concrete buildings, we have no more than three story buildings. Wild life viewing and bird watching are our main activities, fishing for those times when you need more exercise. Only 30 minutes to 'large box' shopping, we have a grocery, a book store, several world class restaurants, a liquor store, our local library, two hairdressers and a consignment shop all less than 6 blocks from our first level condominium.
