Overview

About the property

House, 4 Bedrooms, 3 Baths (Sleeps 6-8)

This ocean-view villa has breathtaking views of the ocean to the front, and the lush rainforest to the rear and sides. Its name is Canto Del Mar (Song of the Sea, Ridge of the Sea) because you can hear the roar of the ocean every night as the waves rush in. It is located at the very end of a beautiful ridge jutting out into the sea, about 300 feet above the ocean, so the home is far cooler and breezier than anything below. Just minutes from the beach! Less than five-minute drive from beach access points to about five beautiful unspoiled beaches, each with its unique character, some with sea caves. This is a newly constructed, spacious two-story furnished home, where you and your friends/family can bask in the luxury of having your own PRIVATE swimming pool, large covered and uncovered patio areas, and covered balcony. No neighbors in sight! Beautiful ocean views from top and bottom floors and from pool. (home is nearly 3000 square feet, plus 1000 sf patio space).

Convenient and Secluded!: When you’re at the house, at the end of Los Loros ridge, surrounded by toucans, parrots, hawks, eagles and monkeys, you will be in the middle of secluded rainforest, with scarcely any civilization in view. As you watch the wildlife, and see and listen to the breaking surf, you will feel like you are hundreds of miles away from everything.

However, this is a great, convenient location, less than one km off of Costanera highway, very near lots of great gourmet international restaurants (French, Italian, German, Swiss, Indonesian, Estonian . . . ), just minutes from grocery stores and other shopping in Ojochal and Uvita, and a short drive away from the best surfing in Dominical, and many wildlife parks and attractions.

Local Property Manager Minutes From the House!: The local property manager, Moises Solano, is located just minutes away from the house. He will greet you, show you to the house, make sure that you are comfortable and familiar with your surroundings, then continue to do everything possible to make your stay a comfortable and enjoyable one. He can assist you with booking tours, rental cars, advance or forward travel arrangements, as well as handling any questions or problems that could arise during your stay.

This is sure to be an experience that you will never forget.

About Owner

I built this beautiful home with a talented local architect and general contractor, completing it in 2009. I'm from New Orleans, and completely fell in love with this part of Costa Rica about twenty years ago.

Owner purchased this villa in 2009

Why Owner chose Puntarenas

This villa is surrounded by jungle and ocean, so it's entirely peaceful and secluded, but also incredibly close and convenient to everything. The jungle hides the few nearby homes from view, so you feel like you're in the middle of nowhere. But it's only a five minute drive from the main thoroughfare, and close and convenient to all restaurants, attractions, amenities. It also offers luxury at a bargain price. Why stay in a cramped hotel room or little cabina for the same price when you can have this entire villa with its crystal-clear swimming pool all to yourselves?

Loved our Costa Rica Villa!

  • 5 of 5

Perfect girl trip getaway! The villa was so roomy! Everyone had their space. And with 3 full bathrooms, everyone was happy!

The pool was so lovely to have! Even though we were busy visiting all the nearby beaches and towns, great to take early morning & late evening swims.

We were only 10-15 mins from Uvita with supermarkets & ATMs. Not far from great food & shopping in Dominical. And only 1 hour from Manuel Antonio National Park.

The villa is at the end of the road so very private. Visited by toucans while sitting on the balcony in the mornings having coffee = Awesome!!

'Mo' the property manager was a gem!

We had rental car problems & arrived 4 hours later than expected. But he was so cooperative, friendly & helpful. He's very knowledgeable about the area. Lots of good ideas for us.

We were worried being spoiled Americans how we would survive without air conditioning. But the nights are wonderful! Screened windows with ocean breezes, ceiling fans & floor fans. Some nights were actually chilly.

A definite return trip in the plans!!

Beautiful home near great beaches, top restaurants

  • 5 of 5

Well maintained home with great support from Mo the caretaker. The property is very private with a super pool and and nice furnishings. The location is excellent as a hub to great adventures. Outstanding restaurants are close buy, along with excellent beaches within 10 minutes. We had a large group that was easily accommodated with the multiple sleeping arrangements. Our only disappointment was running out of time. Can't wait to come back and explore more.

Awesome place

  • 5 of 5

we have settled into life at Canto del Mar. Waking up with the birds, fruit smoothies, swimming (I’m averaging about three visits to the pool every day), reading, beach combing, BBQ dinners (Mo brought the new BBQ - thank you!) and meals at area restaurants. What a great place…so glad we found your listing.

Seclusion with the benefits of civilization

  • 4 of 5

Positives:

Mo, the property manager was AMAZING! We had a medical emergency during our stay that necessitated a 2-day visit to the hospital in Santa Ynez de General. Mo, accompanied and stayed with us the entire time. His translation services and friendship were invaluable. You will have a hard time finding a nicer person in a country of truly gracious and giving people.

Scenery, beaches, birds, monkeys, pool, restaurants and waterfalls have been covered in many other reviews. These comments are not exaggerated. The South Pacific coast stands out in a country that is blessed with an abundance of natural beauty.

Plus/Minus:

Roads: Even when it is dry, a 4-wheel drive vehicle with high clearance is quite useful, if not essential. The main highway is great, but side roads are steep, rutted and filled with potholes. In many places it is difficult to straddle the high spots in the middle of the road. (You won't want a low-rider.) The ride from the main highway to the house is bone jarring. Highway noise from trucks using their jake brakes is noticeable at the house at times. Not much road noise at night.

Rental Cars: We rented locally and picked up our car at the landing strip in Palmar Sur. This had to be arranged in advance, because the car had to be driven down from Uvita. Our car rental was expensive. It might be cheaper to pick a car up in San Jose. Doing so would save the cost of an air flight from San Jose to Palmar Sur, though the flight is spectacular.

The house: Karen responded to all requests for information, and prepared us well. The house is stunning from a distance, but it shows signs of wear and tear that are mainly a product of salt air, and intense sun. The house was sufficiently comfortable for the three of us (and probably 4), but public space and seating in the communal area downstairs is limited (particularly noticeable at night).

Bugs: Hey, it's the tropics. That said, bugs were not a big problem. One bug you should prepare for is no-seeums. They are here. Bring hightop socks, lightweight long sleeves and lightweight long pants. Wear these clothes when you are out in the late afternoon and evening. You will be glad you did. If properly covered, no-seeums are no problema.

Restaurants:

Ylang Ylang - the only Indonesian restaurant in Central America.

El Castillo - Best view in the area. Go for sunset cocktails.

Owner's Response: Thank you for the review. I'm so glad that Mo was able to be of help during what must have been a trying and frightening time. The road to my house has been repaired very nicely since you left, and it is smooth now (it gets redone once a year). Of course we still encourage guests to rent a 4wd, not so much for our own road, but so that they will be able to safely explore the whole rural area around us. We hope you guys return!

Lovely Property

  • 4 of 5

Visited Costa Rica with my husband, children, my mother and brother over Christmas. Karen's property accommodated all of us very comfortably. Her home is lovely, as is the view. Loved the outdoor patio and pool-spent most of our time there. Karen was very quick to respond to emails if we had questions. Her caretaker Mo is fantastic. Was there waiting for us after our journey from San Juan, and made himself available to us if needed. I would highly recommend Karen's property.

AWESOME +++!!!! RETURN VISITOR - WILL BE BACK!!!!

  • 5 of 5

This is one of our favorite places to stay. It's close to everything but yet it is away from everything.. You get the best of both. Private - Fantastic View - Great Pool!!! You don't really need a 4x4 to get here but do get one for exploring. Great restaurants close by. A couple of our favorites are The Bamboo House & The Beach Club @ Villa Leonor.. It is always a pleasure to deal with Karen and Mo (The Property Manager). We will be going back again very soon and I hope that the property is open and ready for our next adventure.

Thank You Karen & Mo!! You guys are the best!!!! See you again SOON!!!

I first started coming to this beautiful part of Costa Rica ten years ago, and fell in love with the natural secluded surroundings, the gorgeous beaches, and the teeming wildlife. I don't think that there is any part of Costa Rica that quite compares with the Southern Pacific. Ojochal is a charming rustic village containing gourmet European restaurants in the jungle. Uvitia is the nearest larger town, containing banks, grocery store, bars, restaurants and entertainment. Dominical is a surfers' paradise. Fun Hip village for surfers and those who like to watch them, Great beach!
