Convenience is what you get with Mabel's Cabin at L.R. Taylor's Estes Park Cabins. Mabel's is located on a hill just above the downtown of Estes Park with private steps leading to the center of town. But get away from it all on your private, covered deck and enjoy the view of Longs Peak and the mountain range. So park your car and walk to restaurants and shopping. Mabel's is also just minutes away from the famous Rocky Mountain National Park. 2.5 miles to Beaver Meadows Visitor Center. 4 miles to Fall Creek Entrance. (so enjoy all that it has to offer)

Originally built in the early 1900's by Mabel Van Hook, one of the four children of L.R. Taylor, to be her summer home and vacation spot. The cabin has been renovated to include all the modern conveniences, but still retains some of it's original charm.

Mabel's has a beautiful space outdoors to roam with trees, rock out-croppings, deer, elk and chipmunks. The elk have their own path right beside the cabin and enjoy resting under the trees.

Estes Park is the perfect vacation spot and there is something to do for everyone. You can rent this cabin year-round and enjoy the seasons of Colorado. We also have 4 other cabins next door if this one is occupied, all of which are part of LR Taylor Cabins. You can see our availability calendar by going to the Home page on our website and clicking on 'Make Your Reservation Today'. We do not keep up this calendar because we have other cabins as well.

About Niki Schneider

This cabin was sold out of the family for quite a few years. We were lucky enough to purchase it so that it is back in the family. I have been coming to Estes Park for vacations since I was a toddler. I never tire of it's beauty and endless changing scenery. I hope you can build the same memories at our little heaven on earth.

Niki Schneider purchased this cabin in 1998

Why Niki Schneider chose Estes Park

Mabel's Cabin is one of 6 cabins with LR Taylor Cabins. My great, great Grandfather came to Estes in 1911 to start building his vacation home, along with his wife and 4 children. He died shortly thereafter, but his children each built their own cabin. Luckily, we were able to buy the ones that had left the family. The cabin we stay in has never left the family and has been passed on through the generations. Nell's Cabin was not in our family, but we bought it because of it's proximity. Each of the cabins has old photos of the family and Estes Park. Come enjoy the history.

What makes this cabin unique

This cabin has a perfect location in a private neighborhood. You can relax on the deck and enjoy the surroundings, watch the wildlife, walk downtown for food or shopping, or drive a short way to get to Rocky National Park. It is the best!

Great, cozy cabin with excellent location (Nell's Cabin)

  • 4 of 5

We had a really good experience staying at Nell's Cabin. It was exceptionally roomy for our family of 5 and it was very clean. The location was AWESOME! We were in walking distance of the town, which made it great to accommodate all family members at different times of the day. The view from the big windows and deck of this cabin were very nice and just what you'd want in a Colorado cabin. The furnace worked great. We had one hiccup with the hot tub where the maintenance guy had to empty it and refill so we almost didn't get to use it but we managed to still get it in at 9 PM at night. There is only one thing that would make us not stay here in the future (unless they get a new one) and that is the Master bed. SO UNCOMFORTABLE! It was so uncomfortable, we almost decided not to stay the second night. It would be in their best interest to get a really nice master bed. (Even though they advertise it being a sleep number bed, it was super uncomfortable)

Owner's Response: We care very much about the comfort of our guests. We will either fix the problem with the bed or get a new one. We do feel we have one of the best locations in Estes Park with gorgeous views of Longs Peak and the range and ease of walking downtown. Since first writing this response, I have contacted our maintenance man and he checked the bed out thoroughly and it is in perfect working order. The people before commented on how they loved the bed. If anyone every has a problem with working the controls always feel free to call us. We don't give up. After further investigation, we did find a problem and we are getting a new bed. Thank You,

One of the best in Estes

  • 5 of 5

I have been coming to EP for over 20 years and have stayed at more places then I can remember along Fall River and the Big Thompson but have never attempted to stay "in town." Hands down this cabin is my favorite spot. It is a little gem tucked just above town. The walk to town is literally 1-2 minutes, yet you can sit on the deck and completely forget you are that close as you look right over main street and the town below. Noise was not an issue and we only used our car when we were headed up into the park to hike. We walked anywhere else and even in the cold of January, it was pleasant and completely doable.

The cabin itself is really cozy. We chose it specifically because of the fireplace and the rustic feel, and neither disappointed. It was the perfect size and had everything we need. The history of the place is really cool as well when you get inside and see the pictures and read about it. I believe it's nearly 100 years old.

A couple logistical comments:

-Hot tub worked great.

-Fireplace was wonderful but just an FYI, it appears the damper/flue is either permanently open or has been removed. I searched for a while to open it, but didn't find anything. I lit a fire and it vented perfectly. The glass doors on the front close tight and there was no leakage of cold air in the night.

-Managers were great. Although you cannot book through VRBO, their website is just as good and I spoke with them on the phone before arrival and while we were there and they were pleasant and helpful both times. There was also a caretaker close by who we ran into a couple of times.

-Both main beds (queen and full) are sleep numbers and are older versions, but both work great. They were a little squeaky getting in and out, but it added to the rustic charm.

-In the summer I would have had all the windows open, most of the house looks out over town and up at Longs Peak in the distance, beautiful setting.

-All the appliances worked great.

-Note that check out is currently at 10a. I had this wrong and thought it was 11a.

I highly recommend this place if you are looking for a true get away, especially in the off season. Leave the tv off, light a fire, and enjoy the beauty of the Creation around you, inside and out!

Owner's Response: We hope all our guests enjoy this little gem. My great great grandfather picked this perfect little spot back in the early 1900's. I am so thankful. And we hope everyone can enjoy the beauty of the mountains while staying at Mabel's Cabin or one of the others on our hill. Thank You for taking the time to share your thoughts. Niki

Can't wait to come back

  • 5 of 5

This was our first visit to Colorado and Estes park. It was such an enjoyable time. Booking was very easy and detailed instructions from the owner had everything we needed to know. Mabel's Cabin is great. very rustic and functional. Super clean upon checkin! The views from the deck were great! Used the wonderful Fireplace each night. So convenient to everything and you can walk downtown. Will defiantly stay here again when we return!

Hiking Vacation

  • 5 of 5

My wife and adult son and I recently spent a week at Mabel's cabin. It is just a short walk from downtown Estes but yet it feels more remote. Excellent location! The deck offers great views and it was just a fantastic location with convenient access to RMNP from both northeastern entrances. We are avid hikers and Mabel's was a great location for us. The cabin has two bedrooms and two baths. The kitchen is very functional. The shared hot tub is right behind Mabel's cabin and very convenient. Nikki, one of the owners was very helpful when we had questions or needed help. We really enjoyed our stay and would stay again. I would like to mention a couple of things which could be improved upon. The cabin information brochure in the cabin contains much information that is over a year old and outdated. We could not get the DVD player to work on the satellite TV and the brochure contained no instructions. (We do not have satellite TV at home so we are not familiar with the functionality, we have cable). We do almost all of our own cooking and as mentioned the kitchen is very functional however on the morning of our last day (Sunday) the power (fuse or circuit) blew in the kitchen and although we looked for a breaker or circuit box we could not locate one. We tried calling the phone number given in our rental instructions and we reached a recorded message which indicated that the office was open on weekdays which did not do us any good whatsoever on the weekend. I would highly recommend a 24 hour contact number in the future.

We did not use the loft as we did not need it for our group of 3. The stairs are very steep to the loft and are accessed through one of the bedrooms. Despite these issues we would return to Mabel's again, we simply would insure that we had the necessary info to use the DVD player and resolve the power issue.

Owner's Response: We do provide 2 mobile phone numbers that can be reached 24/7 on the email letter that we send all guests before their check-in. We always want to make sure that we are there to help our guests with whatever problem may pop up, whether it be a TV issue or anything else. We only advertise this cabin as a 2 bedroom and call the twin bed upstairs as the "Hideout". Just a little surprise bonus. I have added a description saying that it is accessed from the bedroom. Thank You for helping us become better.

Cozy and Convenient

  • 5 of 5

We spent two nights in Mable's Cottage during a visit to Estes Park to speak at Rocky Mountain National Park and at the World Ranger Congress. The rustic cabin was a delightful retreat on our hectic schedule. We especially enjoyed breakfast on the outdoor deck each morning. We would recommend it to couples or small families planning a visit to the area.

Excellent views, excellent location!

  • 5 of 5

My family and I stayed in this little cabin. It was very clean and well stocked but bring your own food. The owner was amazing communicating with her was very easy, super fast response rate. Even though this cottage is small we all fit comfortably. During our trip we got caught in a snow storm (we're from Florida, we were freaking out! No laughing guys) we got snowed in and couldn't move our car. I call the owner and she had someone come out and plow the drive way he even helped us move the car up the hill. I highly recommend this little cabin it'd close to town, we would walk there every day. There's a Safeway like 4 blocks away. We saw plenty of deer too, they would come up to the door looking for food. There's much more too say about this wonderful place! Like I said highly recommend it!!!

Nearest Restaurant
walk to eat, no need for car.

Estes Park and Rocky Mountain National Park have too many activities to mention. You need to spend at least a week to to even experience a part of all there is to offer. In the winter there is snow-shoeing(in the park), ice skating(in town) and downhill skiing (an hour away). In the summer there are scenic drives, hiking, back packing, Estes Park's River Walk, rodeos, music venues, art galleries, fly fishing, horseback riding, white water rafting, bicycling, wildlife viewing, festivals and much, much more. The spring and fall are beautiful, also. The fall, especially, with the aspen trees turning and the elk mating season, with their bugling. We also have great shopping and restaurants. However, in our cabins you can relax on your private deck and enjoy your coffee, wine, beer or dinner. Our cabins will be your home away from home.
