Back River Retreat

Wake up each morning to a beautiful view of Maine's rocky shores and inlets at this waterfront home on the Back River. With its serene and scenic setting, direct water access, and fully renovated interior, this Friendship retreat makes a wonderful home base for exploring the Midcoast.

This riverfront home sits on an acre of land along the Back River, which connects to the open Atlantic Ocean just south. Take a short stroll down the hill to swim at high tide or launch kayaks and paddleboards. This is also a lovely location for exploring, with Nelson Nature Preserve (half a mile), Waldoboro (10 miles), Rockland (15 miles), and Camden (23 miles) all close by. For day trips, head to Port Clyde (25 miles) and catch a boat to Monhegan Island or drive down the Pemaquid Peninsula to the Pemaquid Point Lighthouse (33 miles).

Built in 1958, this ranch-style home was beautifully renovated in 2023 with new appliances, new floors, new furnishings, fresh paint, and an updated bathroom. Curl up by the pellet stove to read on crisp coastal mornings, use stainless steel kitchen appliances to prepare your favorite breakfasts, and gather around the dining room table for eggs and pancakes. There's even a general store and cafe about a mile away, where you can pick up sandwiches, pizza, and groceries.

On sparkling summer days, relax outside in the yard or on the deck, barbecue on the gas grill, and stargaze around the firepit once the sun goes down. Leave the day's clothes in the care of the washer/dryer, log onto the complimentary WiFi to catch up on email, and stream a few of your favorite movies on the smart TV.

Great place to stay while in Friendship
We thoroughly enjoyed our week in Friendship at Back River. I think we were some of the first guests at the house. While we were here probably one of the hottest weeks of the month (a/c is not typical in this part of Maine) it was still comfortable and safe to open windows at night. Very convenient to Wallace general store. Don’t forget to stop at the farmer’s stand 1.5 miles north for fresh cabbage, kale, and the most amazing goat milk! Also, there are lobster boat tours from the Wallace lobster dock that help you appreciate the work that comes into fishing for lobster. Enjoy!
