Property description

Accessible only by a privately owned drawbridge across the Intracoastal Waterway and a gatehouse staffed 24 hours a day, this unique 1300 acre island features over 5 miles of white, sandy beaches and abundant natural beauty free from any commercial development. With only 441 exclusive single-family homes and access limited to homeowners and their guests, Figure Eight Island provides the rare combination of a peaceful retreat and secure sanctuary. The uncrowded beach is ideal for swimming and surfing, walking, shelling, fishing or simply relaxing with a good book in a comfortable beach chair. Beyond the beach, a dedicated paved pathway assures safe off road biking and walking. Sailing, boating, tennis and a myriad of other leisurely pursuits help fill your day on the Island. Despite its seclusion, shopping, restaurants, entertainment and the many amenities of Historic Wilmington and bustling Wrightsville Beach are only minutes from your island sanctuary.

Our home is situated on a protected lagoon that connects with the Intracoastal Waterway by deep-water channel. In addition the lagoon is ideal for sailing, water skiing, kayaking and other water sports. At low tide we have a protected sandy beach especially attractive to young children and novice swimmers. Our dock and sun deck is a perfect place to tie up your boat, fish and watch spectacular sunsets over the marsh. The ocean beach is a short 100 yard walk from our front door over a boardwalk that provides not only beach access but access to the bike pathway.

The house is a classic beach design elevated on pilings that support the two story main house and a single story annex. On the ground level is a two car garage that, in addition to providing coverd parking, houses the water softener and a spare refrigerator as well as beach chairs and other equipment. There is a private hot water shower under the house to wash off salt and sand after a day at the beach.

An expansive main level deck surrounds the house, with ample space for lounging, reading or outdoor dining overlooking the lagoon. The first level of the light and airy main house features a spacious living room opening onto to the rear deck with its panoramic view of the lagoon and marshes beyond. There is a game table perfect for jigsaw puzzle buffs or family games, high-fi equipment and a wood-burning fireplace for cold weather enjoyment. Separated from the living room by a few steps is the dining room which looks out toward the ocean and opens to a fully equipped, newly remodeled kitchen. Adjacent to the kitchen is a wet bar and separate laundry room. The king-bedded master bedroom suite has a separate dressing area and bathroom, and a sitting area with desk and reading chairs opening onto a private deck facing the ocean. Rounding out the first level is a den with television and a sleeper-sofa, and a powder room Upstairs the second level of the main house has two twin-bedded rooms that share a full bathroom.

A few steps across the deck via a covered walkway is the annex providing a perfect retreat from the sometime hubbub of the main house. The spacious bedroom which opens to the rear deck is furnished with a king bed, a couch that converts to a double bed, television and a game table. There is a full bath as well as a 'kitchen' alcove with a small refrigerator, coffee maker, toaster, dishes and utensils.
