Miss Rebecca's Cottage - on Main Street next to Sunset Rock Trail

Bedrooms 3
Space 1,300 sq ft
Property type cottage
Minimum Stay 2 - 6 nights

About the property

3 bedrooms, 2 baths, Sleeps 2-6

Hello from Highlands, North Carolina!

Nestled in one of the best locations in Highlands, Miss Rebecca's Cottage is secluded in town on 2/3 acre right next to the Sunset Rocks hiking area (a short walk to a beautiful overlook), across the street from Highlands Nature Center (native plant gardens, museum, and lake), and one-third mile from Main Street's famous shopping and dining.

Newly renovated and decorated with family heirloom antiques, quality linens, and carefully selected accessories, Miss Rebecca's is an historic cottage that was once an ice house which held blocks of ice from Harris Lake. It was also a caretaker's house and later, an artist's studio. The property was owned by the family of Miss Rebecca Harris since the early 1900's, and included Harvilla, the estate next door which is now a separate property. The lush grounds seclude the cottage from the quiet street but the surrounding grassy, open areas allow lots of light to enter the 24 windows.

The main part of the house has been opened into a great room with a wood-burning stone fireplace, well-equipped kitchen, and a two seating areas. The living room/dining room and kitchen are a deep red with off-white trim and feature comfortable seating in sage green with plaid and richly hued florals. The Master Bedroom has queen bed and private bath. A second bedroom with queen shares a bath with a third bedroom having two twin beds. Bedrooms feature restful tones of sage green or peach with furnishings, artwork, and accessories that have been collected over a lifetime. Enjoy TV/DVD, Wi-Fi, telephone, CD player, radio, puzzles, games, books, and magazines.

With a total square footage of 1300 feet, Miss Rebecca's is cozy but open and suitable for either a family of six or equally appealing for a couple wanting a private, special occasion getaway.

Highlands, at an elevation of 4118', offers a cool summer climate with an average high in July of 77 degrees and an average low of 57. In summer, there are many cultural offerings including theater, music, and outdoor events from which to choose. The fall colors of Leaf Season bring excitement and crowds, especially on weekends; but the quiet evergreen beauty of winter and the gentle unfolding of spring offer a time to enjoy Highlands at a slower pace. Shops and restaurants are open year round and there is a winter/spring theater season as well as summer. Check into activities year-round at The Bascom, The Nature Center, The Highlands Cashiers Players, Highlands-Cashiers Chamber Music Festival, The Highlands Playhouse, Friday Night Live, The Chili Cook-Off (to name a few).

There is no better place to experience the beauty and mystery of the mountains in any season, and there is no house in Highlands more personal, charming, and well located than Miss Rebecca's Cottage. We have been in the hospitality business in Highlands since 1984, when we became innkeeper/owners at Colonial Pines Inn, and we welcome your emails or calls!

About Donna Alley

We have a busy life in Highlands running our Bed and Breakfast, Colonial Pines Inn, which we've owned since 1984! We left our Atlanta careers in Interior Design and Installation, fell in love with the mountains, and moved without looking back. Our two daughters had an idyllic childhood here and both still love the mountains and all things outdoors. They have wonderful memories of large family gatherings at the Inn on special occasions, and growing up around the constant comings and goings of guests taught them many valuable lessons. One is a Property Manager with Inspirato in Denver CO and the other is a horticulturist at the Georgia State Botanical Garden in Athens. Our days are filled with cooking, cleaning, repairing, upgrading, advertising, entertaining, bookkeeping, shopping, and a myriad of other things that bed and breakfast owners do every day. It's a great life!

Donna Alley purchased this cottage in 1993

Why Donna Alley chose Highlands

Highlands is without a doubt, the classiest and most beautiful mountain town in Western NC. At an elevation of 4118', the average nighttime low in July is 57 degrees. In looking around to add an extra investment to our B&B, we found this lovely little house right in town not far from our Inn. Close enough for us to maintain meticulously, we are able to keep a close watch on it and we make sure it stays pristine and in shape for your visit. You will always be able to call us if you need anything and we will be right there, yet you have complete privacy on 2/3 acre right in town. In the past, we've owned other rental cottages in Highlands, but Miss Rebecca's Cottage is by far our favorite, and the others have now been sold so we can really concentrate on keeping Miss Rebecca's shipshape. Its location, size, appearance, and decor make a wonderful choice for a long or short stay in Highlands, and one day, when we sell the B&B, we plan to retire there. In the meantime, it's yours to enjoy!

What makes this cottage unique

Miss Rebecca's most outstanding feature is its location - private yet close to everything Highlands has to offer and best of all, you can park your car and walk. Neither too large nor too small, it can accommodate couples as well as families. From your front door, be sure to take the 15-min hike up Sunset Rocks for a gorgeous view of town, especially at Sunset (this hike can also be driven without 4-wheel drive for those not inclined to hike), and stroll across the street to the 5-acre nature preserve and lake at the Highlands Nature Center, run by University of NC. And check out the excellent summer nature classes for children and lectures for grown-ups. You'll find a Hiking & Water Fall Guide on your coffee table. The Library is 1/4 mile away, and the grocery store, churches, and shops are 1/3 mile. Walking is a popular activity in the safe environment of Highlands, and from Miss Rebecca's you can walk through several beautiful residential neighborhoods as well. Town is the place to be!

Great accomadations, Clear, quick responses with owners

  • 5 of 5

Rebecca's Cottage is very accomadating. Kitchen is well appointed and you can make small to large meals there if desired- although there are numerous wonderful restaurants in walking distance. The walk "to town" takes 10-15 minutes, depending on your fitness level. (The trail going into town in canopied by beautiful rhodadendrums, and be aware- a bit "uphill" on the way back from town. But I was there with two friends. all in our late 40's, ealry 50's and we welcomed the exercise after delectable dinners in town). Ride into town takes less than one minute probably. We parked the car and walked everywhere. Call Justin with Highland Excursions for a tour off the beaten path- Tell him Renee sent you! The home is exactly as pictured, and has upgraded linens and towels in my opinion. You can tell the owners run a b and b in town! Lots of extra touches. Fun girls weekend!

Private, Convenient & Cozy

  • 5 of 5

I stayed here with my family for a week in October and have also rented this cute cottage in the summer. With an easy walk to town and the Highlands Greenway Trail too, you can't beat the location. The interior is nicely decorated and very comfortable. (Check out the mushroom lamp!) Being right across the street from the Highlands Nature Center and botanical garden is a bonus. Owners Donna and Chris are wonderful hosts.

A Lovely Two Weeks in Miss Rebecca 's Cottage

  • 5 of 5

This delightful cottage completely lived up to the owner's description in the listing. The location is excellent, with easy access to town and close to the cultural events we enjoyed so much while we were here. Donna and Chris Alley were helpful and attentive, and immediately addressed any questions we had. We highly recommend this cottage for a Highlands stay.

Splendid Time at Miss Rebecca's Cottage

  • 5 of 5

This is a comfortable and lovely cottage at Highlands suitable for a family, or friends. You feel at home, yet you have many opportunities to sight-see. Since we were there in February and on a rainy weekend, the cottage was a perfect place for reading, for coming back to after a day of photography of nearby waterfalls.

The hosts are friendly, helpful and welcoming. We highly recommend it and will be back for another visit.

WONDERFUL Experience in Highlands, NC! Location, charm, cleanliness, everthing top notch!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I have just returned from two weeks at Miss Rebecca's Cottage in the mountain town of Highland's, North Carolia. I never review our vacation accomodations, but this was so lovely I would like to share our experience. The location is perfect just next to Sunset Rock trail and across the street from The Nature Center--both a must when visiting the area--as well as an easy walk to town. The hosts were so kind and attentive as well as helpful answering all our questions about restaurants, plays, Chamber Music Festival, day trips, in short, just everything. The cottage is well supplied with everything you can imagine needing from a well appointed kitchen to plump towels and lovely family antiques all adding to the cozy, mountain atmosphere. The home sits on a large and private lot completely surrounded by trees and rhododendrun giving plenty of privacy for grilling out or just enjoying the cool air. We will certainly return and recommend it to friends and family. Thank you so much for a special home away from home.

Some things you might like to try while in Highlands in the summer would include lunch at The Orchard in Cashiers, dinner at Lakeside Restaurant where I would recommend reservations. The Chamber Music Festival is just fabulous. There is a huge selection of classes to take at reasonable cost through CLE,and a wonderful selection of plays through the Highlands Playhouse. The Bascom Gallery has great regional art and lots of programs. We love hiking at Cliffside Lake and also Whiteside Mountain. There is also a great trail around the lake at High Hampton Inn in Cashiers which we can recommend. Highlands also has a very nice library which is being expanded; you may use their internet for free which is a huge help. They also have a super used book store called the Book Worm. I think this is enough for you to also enjoy two weeks at Miss Rebecca's!

Miss Rebecca's is located in town at the corner of Main St (Horse Cove Rd) & Gibson St, the quiet end of town. Highlands is very small and Main St is only about 1 1/2 miles long. From Miss Rebecca's to the Library is about 1/4 mile and to the beginning of the business district is about 1/3 mile - very walkable past beautiful old houses on a lovely sidewalk through a rhododendron arbor. Just across the street is the Highlands Nature Center, a five acre nature preserve (with lake) run by the University of North Carolina, and right next to the property is the half mile Sunset Rocks Trail leading up to a picture postcard view down on the town of Highlands. That trail is also driveable! Miss Rebecca's is on 2/3 acre, set back from the street, and surrounded by a forested perimeter. Private & green but close to everything!
