About The Owner

We live in the suburbs of Chicago and have an insurance agency that specializes in group and individual health insurance.

The Owner purchased this chalet in 1983

Why The Owner chose Wakefield

We live in the Chicagoland area and started skiing over 30 years ago. We started out by heading a few hours away to Cascade Mountain and then ventured up even further to Rib Mountain(now known as Granite Peak). We heard so much about the skiing in the UP that we decided to give it a try one weekend; after all it was only another few hours from Granite Peak. I still remember the 1st experience we had at Indianhead. There had just been a fresh snowfall and it was covered in beautiful new powder. We had never experienced anything like it and I remember falling into the fluffy powder instead of the hard ice that we had experienced at the other places. We found out that the UP gets over 300 inches of annual snowfall and with 3 other ski hills nearby, it seemed like the perfect place. After that we decided it was worth the drive and came up whenever we had a free weekend. After paying to stay in the area hotels, we decide to look at properties for sale so we could have our own place and also rent it out for additional income. We take great pride in our place and I think it shows when you see it for the first time. We use to have Indianhead rent our units but as time went on we felt that we would like have a little more control of our property. We use the chalet ourselves so we wanted to make sure that it stays nice for us as well as for our guests. Our two boys grew up skiing at Indianhead. We had them in the ski school for lessons and soon they were good enough to go down the big hills with us. They surpassed us within in few years and left us in the snow dust! They then moved on to snowboarding and that’s all they do now. We wanted to keep our house in a private setting so we purchased all the lots surrounding us so no one could ever build next to us. We think that our place is a winter wonderland!

What makes this chalet unique

It's a Winter Wonderland! We own all the lots surrounding our property so you have lots of places to explore. We have wonderful memories when the ski hill would be open on Thanksgiving day. We would put our turkey in the oven and go out skiing. We also enjoy just walking around in the woods or taking the snowmobiles out for a spin in the area. We also try to go out on the toboggan run and have contests to see who can go the furthest. Sometimes we take a 30 minute drive to visit the casinos and try our luck. In the summer we have gone to Lake Superior and the Porkies for some great sight-seeing. There are beautiful waterfalls in the area as well. September is the perfect time to experience the UP's beautiful fall colors.

Guestbook comments from the owner

(This review is copied from a note sent to the owner)

"Wildernest I & II are great places to stay-so spacious and uniquely decorated. We enjoyed the Indian Statue and all the Indian pictures. The two units accommodated our family extremely well. In spite of the extreme cold, we had a fantastic time. We'd like to stay at Wildernest again when we return to the UP."

Perfect for family or Couples

  • 5 of 5

I was tasked as the coordinator to find VRBO for my wife and I and 3 other couples for a 3 night weekend in the UP of Michigan near Skiing and other winter activities. We rented Wilderness Chalet (upstairs only) and myself and friends couldn't have been happier! The home was well laid out for family/couples. The view from every window is nothing but pine trees! Located on dead-end it was amazingly quiet and peaceful. The main hallway into bedroom area was separated by a door from main living room included doors to separate two bedrooms/bath from the other two bedrooms/bath. The home was clean, had everything we needed and everything worked great! The home is on dead end road and was amazingly quiet and peaceful. We loved the toboggan slide especially at night after a felt great to get outside into the cool air for some fun under the stars! We rented snowmobiles from Cloverland Motorsports which I would recommend. The VRBO owner Jennifer was a pleasure to work with and always quick to reply and informative to any email questions I had leading up to our visit. We plan to return for second annual couples weekend and a few us will likely rent with our own families as well.

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for the great review. We take pride in our home so we are glad you noticed and glad it worked out so well for your family and friends. So happy you were able to use the toboggan slide-it is a blast. I'm glad you mentioned the stars, because the sky is so black up there that the stars are amazing. It was great working with you as well, and we are looking forward to having you back to the Wildernest in the future.

Perfect place for larger group

  • 5 of 5

Wildernest was a great place to stay for us. We have 11 middle aged men and all need our own beds. The place was close enough to the ski hill, but yet alone at the end of the road. The toboggan run was fun. The weather was great for skiing as well.

Very enjoyable stay.

  • 5 of 5

Owners were exceptionally easy to work with and were extremely accommodating. The home was very clean, the linens and towels were ample and also very clean, and the kitchen was well-equipped with literally everything we needed. The common area spaces were ample for a large group.

Our group was 3 siblings (and families) from 3 different states, so it was very nice to all stay together in one space to maximize our time together. We would definitely do it again!

great place for a family vacation!!

  • 5 of 5

We had a family Christmas vacation with 13 of us staying in the upper and lower units of the Wildernest. The accommodations were outstanding---plenty of room in the family room to get together for playing games, etc. The kitchen was well equipped with every utensil we needed. The view out the back patio was gorgeous---the pine trees were loaded with snow--it looked like a Hallmark card!!!

July 4th stay

  • 5 of 5

We were in the U.P. for two separate family reunions and needed a place to accommodate 10 people (4 couples, one teenager and a 5 year old). The Wilderness Chalet worked very well for us. The living room, dining room and kitchen are all open concept and is perfect for gathering. The very large deck is great to soak up the sun and relax. The kitchen is well stocked if you are going to be cooking. Working with Jennifer was very easy. She got back quickly with answers to any questions we had before we booked and made sure everything was organized and set for our arrival. This is a great place to stay when you are in the area. We are skiers and would definitely consider staying at the Wilderness Chalet also during the winter months to ski at Indian Head.
