Overview

About the property

House, 3 Bedrooms + 2 baths with mountain and valley views (sleeps 6)

This tranquil 3BD/2BA home is nestled in the trees on several acres in the Sangre de Cristo mountains at the end of a quiet cul-de-sac that backs to a large open greenbelt. The magnificent views stretch from the forest to towering mountain peaks and out to the wide open San Luis Valley.

Our 2 story home has 2 bedrooms upstairs (1 with queen, 1 with 2 twin beds), and 1 bedroom downstairs (queen). There are 2 bathrooms (one on each level) and the upstairs bath has a steam shower. It is a peaceful, beautiful home, nicely decorated, with an open floor plan and many outdoor areas to enjoy.

Sip your morning coffee on the downstairs deck watching deer wander through your backyard. In the evening, enjoy a glass of wine from the covered balcony, watching the sun set over the valley and the San Juan mountains. At night step out on the upstairs deck and have your breath taken away as you gaze at an infinity of stars above the mountain peaks. Later, take a steam shower and relax in front of the fire after cooking dinner in the open-floor plan gourmet kitchen.

Our home has everything you need to provide a relaxing, rejuvenating retreat, or to simply be your comfortable base camp from which to venture into the great outdoors.

About The Owner

We love the mountains and getting away from a busy life to recharge in nature.

The Owner purchased this house in 2005

Why The Owner chose South Central

The first time we each came to Crestone we were overwhelmed by the serenity and the beauty. It just felt right to have a retreat in this magnificent place.

What makes this house unique

The best thing is the quiet, the mountains stretching all around as far as the eye can see. It is wonderful to look out the window and see deer walking by. Sometimes I just want to sit in front of the fire watching the natural world go by, without leaving the house. It is always wonderful to arrive and difficult to leave.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We had a great trip and really enjoyed your house.

It is really really spectacular.

Our home away from home

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I married each other in this precious home five years ago. How heart- warming it was to be back. Our favorite spot is the balcony you see in the photo. We love watching the sun sets from this balcony. It is truly one of our favorite spots in the world. The beauty is breathtaking! We also adore the kitchen. So beautiful and well stocked with all of our favorite things. And then of course I have to mention the glorious steam shower/bath... aaaahhhhh... My husband and I are exploring building one in our home here in Boulder!

36 hours of serenity...

  • 4 of 5

The house was beautiful. The "dark skies" neighborhood is just what we needed, no lights, and the only sound we heard was from the wildlife or the wind. There isn't much for the daily expenses near by...food or fuel...but we came for the escape of consumerism anyhow. Thank you for letting us crash at such a lovely estate.

Colorado weekend family vacation

  • 4 of 5

The house was overall very nice. Our family had lots of activities planned so the house was mainly our base camp. We did cook two of our meals in the great kitchen. The location is great as long as you are not spending all of your time in Crestone. I guess for a couple the location would be great but for a family with kids it was a little limited for them. We did have a great dinner at the Crestone Brewing Co and then delicious ice cream at the Crestone Creamery!! The inside of the house is great and the steam shower was an awesome addition after all of the hiking we did. Our only suggestion would be to update the outdoor furniture as it was not very comfortable and it kept us from spending more time on the balcony patio. Also there were quite a few mosquitos but I think that was just our bad timing! It makes sense to not have A/C but having a few fans available would be great. One of the days when we came back earlier it was still very hot out and no air movement even with the windows open. Overall this is a great house with very impressive mountain views and we really enjoyed our first visit to Colorado! We will be back!

Owner's Response: Thank you for your feedback. There should have been a fan and outdoor furniture cushions in the closet. We have added two tower fans. The house is very well insulated and if the windows are closed during the hot part of the day it helps keeps the temperature down, but hopefully the newer fans will add to the comfort inside. Also we'll be checking on the outdoor furniture and cushions. I'm glad that otherwise you enjoyed your first visit to Colorado.

Great peaceful setting. Loved the balconies for viewing----even saw a double rainbow one night!

  • 5 of 5

Great location for trips to sight-see: Sand Dunes National Park, Hot Springs, Salida. We ate in most nights -- everything you needed to do that. Did try the pub in downtown Crestone one night and that was good. Clean, well-equipped. Would definitely stay again.

Beautiful setting/cleaning company needs to be more thorough

  • 3 of 5

The house has amazing views especially from the decks at night. It is a quiet setting. Very difficult to find at night, but we were prepared for that due to Michelle's instructions.

The lack of trash bags was surprising. I understand that the house does not have trash service, but the little grocery bags were inadequate. Also, the kitchen especially around the stove was greasy and could have used a good scrubbing.

The cleaning company made the stay somewhat uncomfortable. On Sunday at 10:05 a car pulls up and we get a call that we were to be checked out at 10:00. We explained that according to our reservation confirmation we had the house for one more night. Easy mistake to make, but about an hour later I get a call on my cell phone asking what time we would be leaving in the morning and stating that she still had us down for departure that day and not the next. She made it seem that our staying an extra night (again that is what we reserved in the first place) was causing a major inconvenience to her and her cleaning crew.

Owner's Response: I'm so sorry to hear you felt uncomfortable with the housecleaner. She did let me know she had made a mistake on your check-out date, and I apologize for that error on her part. She has been a very reliable cleaner (which is difficult to find in our remote area) and takes pride in keeping the house clean and ready for each of our guests, but she should not have conveyed any sense of being inconvenienced. She said her intention in calling back was to apologize for her mix-up and find out your departure time on your actual check out day, not to make you feel uncomfortable. We will review our procedures and put extra checks in place to ensure we maintain our high standard for the house as well as our guests experience. We do provide trash bags. The bags we use are earth friendly bio-bags that are green in color, and are under the sink by the trash can. I will instruct her to double check on supplies before each guest to be sure the bags are visible. We want everyone's experience to be wonderful, and despite these few issues I do hope you were still able to enjoy your time in Crestone and the surrounding area.

Colorado Family Getaway

  • 5 of 5

Our family thoroughly enjoyed our stay at this beautiful property. The house is secluded and peaceful, with great 360-degree views from the many windows and decks. The proximity to the mountain peaks on the east make this view majestic, while the sunsets in the west make this the perfect end to the day, unless the weather cooperates enough to see the many stars at night. Our seven-year old loved exploring the many different rocks, trees and plant life on the surrounding property. We saw several deer grazing in the evenings. We were greeted by friendly neighbors wen we walked around the surrounding neighborhood. Everyone loved the steam shower at the end of the day.

We highly recommend the Crestone Brewing Company in town for fresh, organic, "farm-to-table" food with gluten-free and vegan options. We made a couple of trips to The Great Sand Dunes National Park (about a hour away), where we hiked, went "sand-sledding," and played in Medano Creek. We also enjoyed a tour at the Colorado Gators and Reptile Park. The staff is very knowledgeable and interested in educating the public about these animals. They are especially engaging with the children, letting them hold many of animals. We also had a great time at the Sand Dunes Swimming pool, nearby. The water is a warm 97 degrees and the diving boards were a big hit with our kids.

Michelle was a great host, making check-in and check-out easy. She was always very quick to respond to questions and she made sure we had all of our directions and check-in information well in advance of our arrival.

We highly recommend this property for a peaceful retreat that is still near enough to many local activities!
