Old Bahama Bay has some lovely people and lots of potential but is not a 5 Star currently.
The setting of Old Bahama Bay resort is lovely. The people were kind and friendly with a very relaxed demeanour. The room was very nice and had an excellent view of the ocean and pool area. I did like the balcony to relax , look out and visit. Also the marina right in the resort was cool. It brought a cool feel and look to the place with large yachts and boats coming in and out. Also the people on the boats were friendly and we had some great visits with people from all over. That was a neat experience.
The resort itself I would say is poorly ran. I am a detail guy and there was lots to be noticed. They have not kept up on he upkeep and cleaning of the resort. The Marina is in some decay and needs boards and ladders replaced and updated. The pathways have broken off bricks and cracked stones everywhere. There was no heat to the pool and it was not kept clean of debris. The Tiki hut by the bar was cool but often filled up by some locals and staff. (I did love a lot of the staff but as a resort that should always be kept clear for the paying guests)
To note the beach area is often covered with seaweed and debris and there is a lot of seaweed in the ocean so not ideal for swimming if your a fair weather beach guy like me. I only want to touch sand out there in the ocean. So I didn’t feel comfortable swimming in the ocean and the pool was freezing so I couldn’t swim there.
I was also very surprised how dirty and decaying much of the Island was. When we travelled up and down the Island in a rental car there was garbage everywhere. A lot of homes and apartment complexes and abandoned hotels were everywhere. I know they got hit hard by hurricane Matthew and I don’t blame anyone on this as they were all lovely people. You should just know what you are going to experience. It is also not cheap at all. Not like a Mexico trip. So you experience the high cost of a Hawaii trip but with a 3 rd world experience.
The room we stayed in was nice though and I would go back. I would just be better prepared than thinking I was going to a 5 star resort. And I would definitely not overpay for a trip there.
An Island Paradise!
Our stay was incredible! The beauty of the resort, with colorful condos, a white sandy beach, palm trees and beautiful blue waters was breathtaking. The condo was lovely, very clean and modern, with a large bath., and a fabulous beachfront view. We enjoyed dining at the two on-site restaurants and lounging around the pools. I used the fitness center each morning and enjoyed riding a bike that was included with the amenities, along with kayaking and snorkeling. The staff was pleasant and accommodating. This was a much needed relaxing vacation for us and we would definitely return to the West End, Bahamas and Old Bahama Bay resort.
thanks. so much
Fantastic Vaca at OBB!
Old Bahama Bay is a beautiful resort! The unit itself is lovely and my favorite part was sitting on the balcony, sipping cocktails and overlooking the beach and water. I think it's the best located unit at OBB--very close to the water and the building is at end which provides really nice views. We used the kitchen for some meals, which was convenient. If you want to actually cook a meal know that the cupboards only have dishes and glassware -- no spices, oil, etc. But there is a little market nearby to get what you need. We also enjoyed the restaurant on site. All of the people who work at OBB are fantastic--so friendly and helpful. We used the kayaks and paddle boards, which were really fun. The resort is super laid-back, so you just grab the equipment from the beach and off you go. We also rode the bikes, which were better than I expected--perfect for riding around the area. Owen, the owner, was really helpful at answering my questions before the trip. He gave us some great recommendations for restaurants that were outside OBB, but not too far away. The locals we met there will be what we remember most from our trip--great people! I would recommend renting a car at the airport (Brad's Rental Cars) because it's about a $70 cab ride each way, then you have flexibility to easily go other places too. Definitely recommend Owen's condo!
Loved the suite, location, everything!
If you are looking for affordable luxury and want to get away from it all but still have all the amenities like kayaking snorkeling, paddle boarding, biking, fishing and mingling with the locals then you will not regret this trip. Old Bahama Bay is away from the tourist section but close enough to Freeport and Lucaya that you can have it all. Owen, the owner of the property we stayed in, knows all the ins and outs of Grand Bahama Island, and that in itself is reason enough to make this your next vacation. It was great seeing the real Bahamas, and my wife and I found that everything that was said about this beautiful condo was right on the money. I could go on and on but believe me, just go and enjoy everything they have to offer
We went there this last June with kids. It was a beautiful place. The apartment is very nice, has everything you need. Very clean. The owner is very nice and easy to work with. We loved it so much the minute we came bag we contacted owner to go back again. Can't say enough nice things about this place. We will be going back.
