About Linda Smith/Tom Petersen

We are long-time cabin owners on a nearby island.

Linda Smith/Tom Petersen purchased this cabin in 2012

Why Linda Smith/Tom Petersen chose Lake Vermilion

We knew the previous long-time owner of this property. Several of our family members worked for them over the years, helping with the island garden. Remnants of the gardens are still there, although they are getting overgrown. This cabin was used as his family's guest cabin. It was handcrafted by another Island resident's father in the late 1950's. Our daughter was greatly influenced by this family and they were helpful and encouraging, helping her choose her career. It then came into the family ownership and was used privately until Grandpa couldn't manage island life.

What makes this cabin unique

The cabin feels romantic- sorry fisherman- but it does! The quiet surroundings, the tall pines, the lake lapping softly at the rocks on the shore. The haunting calls of the loons just make all your cares disappear. Island living isn't for everyone, it is a unique way of life.

Great Summer Getaway!

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I had a great time at this lake house! It really did feel like we were on the island by our self's and the views off the dock were great! We went the first week of June and caught walleyes (few over 20 inch) small mouth and rock bass right from the dock. We rented a boat from moccasinpointmarine.com and they brought the boat right to the landing for us (landing is only a few hundred yards away from the cabin). The house had everything we needed to cook and clean fish, and was extremely comfortable and clean. We plan on making another trip in the future.

Great Place

  • 4 of 5

The cabin is nice, it has everything you need to relax and get away. The cabin is close to the boat landing (main land) and in a nice location on the lake. We would definitely go back.

Perfect fall getaway!

  • 5 of 5

Our 2nd time @ this wonderful cabin. We will be back again. Everything you would need is here, all you have to do is relax. We didn't go far to get fish - just around the island and across the bay. The weather was cool (we did wear long underwear in the boat), we had the 1st snow/sleet of the season and some rain, but we had an awesome time. Thank you Linda - see you next year.

Cute, cozy cabin on the lake

  • 5 of 5

We had a great time at the cabin on Grove Island! Linda made sure we had everything we needed! The cabin was clean and well-maintained and comfy. Everything was as it is represented on the site, or even better!

When we arrived, the power was out from a huge storm and Linda provided a generator so we still had power for the fridge and water pump.

We did not bring a boat but ended up canoeing back and going to Bear Head Lake State Park and McCarthy Beach State Park two different days for hiking. It was a short canoe ride back to the car. The trails were very quiet. We saw only 4-5 people on the trails total between both days! They were nice trails though.

The swimming at the cabin was nice, there was a large area where we could reach the bottom. The bottom was all rocks though and our dog wasn't a huge fan of having to go through to rocks to get to the swimming area.

We had the spaghetti and meatballs and chicken scampi from the Vermilion Club. The spaghetti and meatballs was nothing to write home about, but the chicken scampi was quite good, and both stayed warm long enough to get back to the cabin via canoe from the restaurant.

Thanks for the great stay Linda!

Cute hideaway! Close to boat launch. Like you're on your own island even though there is neighbors. Very nice place to rest and relax! Would recommend!!

Map

Lake Vermilion is one of the most beautiful lakes in the country, according to National Geographic Magazine. This cabin was hand-crafted and recently brought back to life. It served as the guest cabin for the long-time owner. It is quiet, tucked away into the hill surrounded by massive pine trees, it has been described as elegant and charming. The private cove provides easy docking, fishing and swimming. The proximity to the BWCA entry point #1- Trout Lake, makes this an ideal base camp. Loons frequent the cove in the evening hours. It is close to several marinas and Moccasin Point Public Landing.
