About George Vargish

My wife and I are both retired, and we live in a southern New Hampshire home about 80 miles from Camp George, and an hour drive from Boston. My wife has always enjoyed gardening, and when cancer visited her life, I found myself fulfilling her gardening dreams in our back yard. I somehow got hooked on gardening. She is now in remission, and we both have become 'Master Gardeners' through training at the University of New Hampshire. Our personal gardens and volunteer work at UNH, which is a requirement of our training, keeps us busy.

I (George) have always loved 'a place on the water', and I met my wife (Audrey) when she sold me a lakefront cabin in New Jersey, where we have spent most of our life. A change in jobs brought us to New Hampshire 6 years ago.

My love of a cottage on a lake never left me, and we were completely enchanted with the state of Maine. We love trips to the craggy coast shorelines, picturesque lighthouses, lobster pounds and antiquing locally and in not so distant areas. I searched for years to find a special retreat where I could enjoy boating and recreation in a private setting.

George Vargish purchased this cottage in 2012

Why George Vargish chose Limerick

Lake Arrowhead is a unique body of water consisting of 1100 acres. Unlike most single, 'circular lakes', Lake Arrowhead meanders into many different directions providing many interesting inlets, coves and beach areas to explore by kayak, canoe or pontoon boat. Jet skis are permitted, however the lake has always remained quiet and peaceful - unlike larger recreational lakes. What made Camp George special to us was its unique location. Many homes around Lake Arrowhead are perched high above the lake and access to the shoreline can only be achieved by descending a great many steps. Naturally, you would have to climb these same steps to return to the house. Camp George is only 75' from the water's edge, with minimal steps. It is also situated between a private cove on one side and one of the larger bodies of water on the other. This makes it perfect for families with children. The cove is a perfect place to learn how to kayak or watch over children in a protected area, yet there is immediate access to the larger area for motor boating and fishing.

My grandson George learned how to kayak here, and when he exclaimed "This is the best day of my life!" I decided to give the camp a name and allow other guests to build memories at this special place.

What makes this cottage unique

Camp George falls within a private homeowner's association of approximately 1,300 homes in Waterboro and Limerick, Maine. The community surrounds beautiful Lake Arrowhead, which is known for its great bass fishing, boating and beautiful sunsets. In addition to abundant nearby recreation, Lake Arrowhead Community offers amenities such as a state-of-the-art fitness center with cardio room, weight room, exercise room and sauna. Clubhouses have indoor and outdoor pools, showers, locker rooms, a fully equipped kitchen, tennis courts, basketball, volleyball, billiards, darts and more. These amenities are close and free to enjoy 7 days a week and are especially welcomed on a rainy day.

Great Fall Getaway

  • 5 of 5

Me and my husband loved our stay at Camp George. The house was clean, spacious and had everything we needed for a few days away from the city. The lake was serene and had lots of nooks to explore making our morning kayak rides relaxing and interesting...not a boring open oval like some lakes. George was attentive, had many great recommendations to provide and made sure all of our needs were met. I would highly recommend a stay here.

Best vacation ever!

  • 5 of 5

Camp George provided every single thing that we were looking for in a relaxing vacation. The property sits on a small private cove that looks out into the larger portion of the lake. The camp itself itself is extremely clean, cozy and well maintained with a cabin atmosphere and a unique "moose" decor theme in every room. When we first arrived there was a moose bucket gift basket with our name personalized on it. It was full of s'more goodies and two "Camp George" coffe mug souvenirs! The porch with Windows all around is a nice large space for the whole family to enjoy. My teenagers loved being able to sleep out there on the futon with their own privacy and there very own tv with movies and games. The icing on the cake for us was the ability to take the pontoon boat out for a few hous a day to tour the lake and watch eagles soar and enjoy spectacular sunsets. We also just hung out on the boat while docked and just relaxed for hours. We couldn't have asked for anything more as the owner covered it all and then some going above and beyond to provide their guests with the perfect vacation getaway. We can't thank George enough for his incredible hospitality and the privilege to stay in his home for a whole week. It was truly the best relaxing , stress free vacation experience ever and I would go back in a heartbeat!

Great cottage, perfect for our family vacation!

  • 5 of 5

We normally vacation in North Carolina but decided to visit Maine this year. Camp George couldn't have been more perfect for our family's vacation. My kids (6 & 2) had a blast. They loved going out in the paddle boat, kayaking and jumping off the dock. They especially loved the gift basket of s'mores supplies. My husband was more than happy to be able to go out fishing every day. The cottage is clean and we all felt comfortable and at home during our stay. There were binders full of useful information about the cottage, local restaurants and activity ideas. I'm so glad we decided to visit Maine for the first time and that we chose to stay at Camp George. My oldest daughter is already asking when we can go back.

Fantastic, well equipped, cozy, clean, perfect location and George was wonderful!

  • 5 of 5

Larry and I spent our honeymoon at Camp George. We entered a clean and cozy cottage. On the counter was a personalized gift basket welcoming us. We immediately sat down and went through all the informational material, binders full of what to do, how to do it, where to go and every question answered. We rented the pontoon boat, which was truly fantastic and fun way to explore the lake. Every day we had lunch on the boat. We also used the paddle boat, canoe, and kayaks. We saw eagles, blue heron and loons. The town of Cornish is a short drive away and absolutely charming. We visited the Friendly River Music store which is guitar heaven! Camp George is 48 minutes from Portland if you want to go to the ocean. We hiked Sawyer Ridge, wear bug spray and good hiking shoes. We really enjoyed our stay and especially our host, George who made our stay especially fun and pleasant . Many thanks George!
