About this property

The Munches Room at Buittle Castle, a Georgian Style Stay in a Medieval Castle

The Munches Room is carefully appointed in the Adam style, and connects guests to the Jacobite history of Buittle, former home of the Maxwells. The room is on the ground floor, with access to the courtyard (with one step) and its own ensuite bathroom with shower. Full Scottish or American breakfast is included. Gluten-free and vegetarian options are also available. Please let us know of any dietary requirements ahead of time. We aim to offer guests a true country house experience.

As part of our effort to reduce our environmental impact, gourmet tea and coffee are provided by the house manager upon request.

The site which the present tower occupies was once the inner bailey of the medieval Buittle Castle, one of Scotland's royal castles and twice capital of Scotland. Buittle was home to Lady Devorguilla of Galloway and the Bailliol Dynasty, and later a Jacobite stronghold of the Gordon and Maxwell families, who re-constructed the original 13th Century keep into the present L-plan tower, c.1500. Buittle Castle, unlike many such buildings, remains very much a working building, and so retains the 'feel' that these buildings had when first built, surrounded by formal gardens, livestock, vegetable growing and pleasure grounds. It is currently home to James, the 24th great grandson of Lady Devorguilla, and his cousin Tobias, who have re-acquired the castle after roughly 60 years of it being out of family ownership. The site is also home to a working printing office specialising in craft letterpress printing and bookbinding, and a medieval chapel, with an interesting Jacobite history, in which services are regularly celebrated in the pre-reformation Use of Sarum.

Everything we expected
The stay here was everything we expected. The only issue was the weather but not much that could be done about that. The dinner was lovely and good value for money.

Fabulous Short Stay
We had a fabulous short stay at Buittle Castle. The setting is very tranquil and the room extremely comfortable. We woke to the sound of birdsong and were served a great Scottish breakfast. We just had time for a short riverside walk, all within the grounds, before heading for home. I would certainly recommend.

Another repeat visit
My husband and I have stayed in this wonderful accommodation annually for the past five years. It never lets us down, being comfortable, clean, welcoming and quiet. A pleasing newish addition are the tea and coffee-making facilities in each room. Breakfasts are a real treat and the personal service is exemplary, with nothing too much trouble for the host. There are so many interesting places to visit nearby or you may simply enjoy the peaceful garden and wider grounds. Highly recommended!

What a great find
What a great little find! We booked a one night stay for my birthday as we rarely get the chance to get away. Communication was excellent throughout and Tobias was very attentive and looked after us extremely well. The food was excellent. We had dinner in our room, we would have loved to have dinner in the hall but we were made aware of heating problems and accepted this. Breakfast was also very delicious. We had a dip in the hot tub which was lovely in the snow and extra towels were provided. The room was a little cold, and it was exceptionally cold outside, though. Maybe a few toiletries would be nice, but for the money Buitle Castle was excellent value for money.

Timeless castle stay
We had the most amazing time staying at Buittle Castle. The room was simply gorgeous, with the lovely peacock wallpaper and charming antique paintings. The grounds that the castle is located on were just beautiful on our cool autumn day there. My favorite part had to be the sunken garden, which was wonderfully landscaped and would be a perfect place for an afternoon tea when the weather is warmer. James was extremely accommodating and very knowledgeable about the history of his family home. I should also mention that our Scottish breakfast in the castle great room was delicious, and we felt like we were part of a period piece. We loved our stay here and can't wait to come back for another season.

A short escape to Buittle.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here in a lovely part of the world. The hot tub was bonus after a long day. Tobias was a wonderful host. Buittle is a most interesting place with interesting owners and we felt we had just scratched the surface so we will just have to make a return visit.

A wonderful and unique stay
Buittle Castle is a beautiful and unique place to stay. The Munches room was very comfortable, the surrounding scenery was beautiful, and the breakfast was excellent. Tobias was a gracious and informative host. And it’s not every day you get to stay in a 12th century castle. I loved it.

Nettes Experiment

Excellent and very different place to stay.
An excellent place to stay. Very different. Great hosts, buildings and gardens. Superb food. Very comfortable. Ample car parking. Solitary and restful location, but close to ammeneties in nearby Dalbeattie. Great internet connection, but no television. So, if you want to catch up on TV take your tablets. We will definitely return and have no hesitation recommending.

Dissapointing
Stayed at the Buittle Castle for 1 night . Upon arrival the first impression is a lovely setting with peace and quiet . The host was warm and welcoming. I was under the impression the stay included a visit inside the castle but we didn't see inside as our room was adjacent to the castle. The grounds were lovely. Unfortunately the level of dust withing the room especially under the bed and surfaces was disappointing. The pillows were stained and the mattress very stained .towels were also stained . I slept on top of the duvet . Breakfast was small and greasy. Paying guests expect a level of cleanliness Unfortunately we won't be staying again . We didn't let it spoil our time there as the grounds and garden made up for it. Small details like keeping on top of housekeeping is paramount to keep guests coming back.

Lovely Stay
We loved our stay at Buittle Castle. Our room was beautifully decorated and very comfortable, with everything we needed. Tobias was a lovely host - very attentive and thoughtful. Both he and James were very knowledgeable about the castle and surrounding area, which made for an even more interesting stay. Supper in the dining room was atmospheric and lots of fun. Staying at Buittle Castle was a delightful treat. We were made most welcome and thoroughly enjoyed the hospitality. Or room was comfortable and the food was excellent.
