About this property

Charming, detached cottage located in a pretty fishing village

A hop, skip and a jump from the glistening sea in the pretty fishing village of Porthallow. This charming, detached cottage is within easy walking distance of the beach and popular gastro pub, just 400 yards away. Sit in the cove and enjoy the fabulous views across the bay to Falmouth and beyond. Bring your pooch, the cove is dog friendly and, for guests looking to explore the wonderful coast, perfect for kayaking, hiking or rock pooling.

Three steps lead up to the entrance, the hall leads to the comfortable sitting/dining room, where a roaring wood burning stove will warm your cockles following a day by the sea, gather around the dining table and plan the next days’ adventures whilst enjoying a meal prepared in the well-equipped kitchen.
The second sitting-room is also on the ground floor, perfect for the children to park up and watch the television, draw or play a game. Along the corridor you will find the master bedroom, decorated in neutral colours and the king size bed dressed with luxury linens. Just a step up from this room is the family bathroom and, next to that, the large wet-room and access to the steps up to the garden.
Head up the open tread stairs to two further bedrooms both dressed with luxury linens and have sloping ceilings. One is perfect for children, with its low single beds and the second, good for adults with its double bed.

Outside, to the rear of Rutherglen, steps lead up to the lawn, decked terrace and barbecue area; sit and take in the silence as you prepare an alfresco feast whilst the sun sets across the valley.

A beautiful cottage in quiet fishing village
Rutherglen is a pretty, well-appointed cottage, with a small steep garden at the back, and less than 5 minutes from the beach. The village has a great little pub - the 5 Pilchards, and a walk up the hill to the famous 5 Apples cafe - which does the most wonderful breakfasts - traditional, vegetarian or vegan! The cottage was great for 4 people, but the fact there is only 1 WC in the main bathroom - the other bathroom being a 'wet room' with just shower and sink - would have made it less than ideal for 6 people. Everything was very clean and comfortable, with plenty of space for us, and the location is perfect.

Rutherglen cottage needs work!
Rutherglen is situated in a very quiet fishing village with a local pub just a short walk away which served good food. However, the cottage itself is in dire need for some tlc. It is extremely damp in the downstairs shower room in particular and when we arrived the door to the shower room was covered in black mould as was the other door in the room which leads to the boiler. The tiles on the floor also are loose and grout is mouldy - all in all not very pleasant, it smelt bad and you could not shut the door when having a shower due to it being so warped. Unfortunately the cottage had not been cleaned properly before our arrival, despite us being told to arrive a little later than planned 4pm. We found debris including socks under the sofa and bin in toilet full up. Lots of rubbish bags outside which should have been taken away, under the cupboards lots of mice droppings and cobwebs. Broken glass and muck by side of fridge. Leftover food in cupboards, and what looked like remnants of dog food on a magazine left in the lounge. I would say, however, Joanne at Cornwall Hideaways was extremely helpful and arranged for further cleaning but this was still not the best job. Still items found under sofa etc!

Lovely property Great locals
Overall very happy with this property. Great location, spacious and clean. Loved the decking area for an afternoon recovery from walking and outdoor eating. Kitchen well equipped. Disappointed that the Master bedroom does not have a King sized bed as advertised. Would expect more washing up liquid to be supplied. Parking space very difficult to use. Locals very friendly. Five Pilchards pub very good for food and service. Some great walks from the property as well as across the rest of The Lizard. Planning on a return soon.
