About this property

Heavenly luxury rustic cottage in historic country estate - Belchamp Hall Mill

A stunningly unique conversion of the old mill in an unparalleled rural location down a dead end track through the impressive grounds of Belchamp Hall, a beautiful Queen Anne period house and home to the Raymond family since 1611. Being next to a reed rich pond, fields and ancient woodland the abundant and varied wildlife creates an immersive bucolic experience. An eclectic mix of original, reclaimed and antique woodwork throughout, combined with painted and exposed brickwork creates a distinctive and luxuriously rustic retreat. An open plan living area on the upper floor provides all round views over the rolling landscape of a large private estate.
First Floor
Kitchen - ‘Log cabin style' with Professional Rangemaster, double butlers sink, fridge/freezer, microwave, kettle and toaster.
Central Staircase - Made of solid oak it is the prominent spine of the mill.
Sitting Area - Light, spacious and open plan with original wooden beams and a Juliet balcony overlooking the pond. On a raised platform is a large enveloping Ralph Loren sofa warmed by an impressive log burner with wonderful views and a discreetly hidden 32" Smart TV.
Ground Floor
Master Bedroom - Super King-size bed, large hanging cupboard and split stable door opening straight onto the pond. Brick paving with foot warming underfloor heating.
Poets Corner - Nestled under the open staircase is a writing desk, chair and contemplative sofa.
Shower Room - Through a wide keystoned archway is a walk-in power show accessed from two sides behind a glass screen, lavatory and handbasin.
Outside
Seat at the top of the stairs to the ‘top door' and a ground floor terrace with table and chairs immediately adjacent to two wildlife filled ponds and access to rolling countryside of a large country estate.

10/10 Excellent

Idyllic spot to contemplate life
The cottage is set in the most superb spot surrounded by fields and woodland nestled next to a picture perfect pond teaming with pondlife ducks and lillies - we were even graced with the arrival of a swan family that waddled in for a bathe one morning. There’s one other cottage behind the house but its certainly not overlooked and feels very secluded. The cottage itself is a really fun mill conversion with the bedroom downstairs meaning you wake up surrounded by nature. There’s a walk in double shower and bathroom downstairs also. The owners beautiful art is on all the walls which is a gorgeous addition amongst the shabby chic decor. Up the old oak central staircase you’ll find very comfy living area and well appointed kitchen - again with mix and match farm cottage appeal that instantly makes you feel relaxed and homely. The soft furnishings, wool blankets and old leather sofa immediately invite you to curl up with a good book next to the roaring log burner. (Which also fills the room with that lovely log burning smell that encourages a perfect sofa doze) Stable doors allow you to open up the room and live amongst the surrounding wildlife. The cottage has everything you need including a nice welcome pack to get you started. I would recommend you bring all the food you need as shops are not easy to access. (there is a BBQ) Also there are no pubs or restaurants within walking distance so book cabs in advance if you want to partake of the many fine oldie worldy pubs and local ales. The owners Charlie and Alice are friendly and helpful and knowledgeable. Our dog had such a good time he wants to move in permanently. Take a good book, your water colours, a burger and bottle of wine and you be set for the weekend.

A very pleasant holiday cottage
A very pleasant holiday cottage with lovely views and walks all around. We enjoyed our stay and were near family to enjoy the family celebration. A very peaceful place.

Relaxing, beautiful, helpful
Had a cracking time staying at the old mill. We cycled out from Sudbury station along tiny lanes - no car needed! The mill was an atmospheric and beautiful place to stay. All the fittings etc were high quality and comfortable. A few small comments- - the "welcome hamper" is quite minimal - which is fine! Just useful to understand - in particular there was only instant coffee - we assumed there would be fresh coffee so didn't order any in our food delivery...!! - it would be useful to have some washing up sponges, cleaning spray, and loo cleaner

8/10 Good

Stunning location
The location and seeing the peacocks, kingfisher and other and wildlife along with stunning snowdrops. Mainly the Mill was clean apart from the blinds and lamps which hadn't been cleaned in a while. The sinks, crockery etc all very clean. Every facility available ie dishwasher, microwave etc and clean white sheets and towels. The Mill was nice and warm and a lot of thought had gone into the decor and presentation of the property. A welcome pack was very much appreciated and again a thoughtful touch. Overall, a lovely location and peaceful, just some of the cleanliness could be improved.
