Between the elegant Pincio and the banks of the Tiber, Piazza del Popolo forms a huge ellipse. Churches, fountains, monuments, of ancient and modern Rome embellish the place.

Since ancient times, the northern entrance to the city has formed a vestibule in the city through the door in the wall of Aurélien. Although now known as Porta del Popolo, it has had several names over the centuries.

Originally called Porta Flaminia by the Emperor Aurelian who commissioned its construction, during the early medieval period it was called Porta San Valentino, after the nearest catacomb. Finally, the name of Porta del Popolo was agreed, as was the church adjoining the eastern gate of Santa Maria del Popolo.

Piazza del Popolo itself was known as Piazza del Trullo in the Middle Ages, after the conical fountain in the center of the square, reminiscent of a characteristic South Italian habitation. Its current name may be due to poplar, known in Latin 'populus' which also meant people, an apt association, as various public events such as fairs, games and spectacular performances were held there.

For centuries, Piazza del Popolo had a public fountain, a drinking trough and a cistern for washerwomen. It was Sixtus V, in 1589, who turned his attention instead. The Trullo fountain, under the supervision and execution of Domenico Fontana, was to be replaced by the Egyptian obelisk of Ramses II, second in age and height than that of San Giovanni, originally brought to the city by Emperor Augustus, and put in Circus Maximus.

Its transport and installation in Piazza del Popolo gave the place a more majestic, less domestic air. Four lions of water basins were added to the obelisk in 1823, during the reign of Pope Leo XII.

The next event was the arrival of Queen Christine of Sweden. Eager to convert to Catholicism, she arrived in Rome in 1655, to a splendid reception: coming from the North, her first vision was the Porta del Popolo.

Bernini had been commissioned to restore the interior facade of the old door in preparation for his arrival. A plaque has been placed above the arch, reading: 'FELICI FAUSTOQUE INGRESSUI MDCLV' (For a Happy and Auspicious Entry) which remains to this day. Her entry was so 'happy' that she would never leave Rome.

Towards the end of the seventeen hundreds, in the midst of the Napoleonic invasion, the ever-increasing flow of visitors and pilgrims, who descended on Rome through the Porta del Popolo, motivated the decision to modernize the place.

Until the 18th century, the square has a trapezoidal shape which converged towards the door. During the Napoleonic era, the French prefect, Tournon, was the head of the 'Embellishments Commission' in Rome.

He commissioned Valadier, a Roman architect, to redesign the Piazza del Popolo, which he did has a surprising effect. The works started in 1816, lasted until 1824 and the first time, since the French occupation, that the prisoners were not used for the works.

The project had to take into account important existing buildings: three churches, Santa Maria del Popolo, Santa Maria di Montesanto (Saint Mary of Montesanto), Santa Maria dei Miracoli (Saint Mary of Miracles), the obelisk, Porta del Popolo and Via del Corso, which was to remain intact.

The lateral structures were replaced by spacious exedres. These supported the fountains of Neptune between two newts, and Roma Goddess on each side, added in 1823 during the reign of Pope Leo XII. The square then became accessible from side to side, as well as each end.

With a touch of genius, the square was connected to the park on the hill above by a staircase descending from the Pincio hill. Piazza del Popolo was the pope's last contribution to the legendary architecture of Rome, and in many ways reflects its splendor, inspiring a sense of fear in the visitor.

Highlighting this supremacy, the three churches dedicated to the Virgin, surrounded by the obelisk which in ancient times was dedicated to the pagan Sun god.

Splendid home in Rome
We enjoyed our stay in Rome in this sumptuously Appointed home, surrounded by flowers and antiques. Close to the Etruscan and Modern art museums and the lovely Borghese Gardens, we walked many pleasant times in the neighborhood. We particularly appreciate the responsiveness and assistance of Celine who welcomed us and helped us with transportation.

Artistic Flat
A beautiful, nicely furnished flat that is still used by the landlords. You feel as if a good friend has allowed you to use their flat. The flat is 10 min north of the Piazza del Popolo. From the description and the other reviews it didn't come out so strongly for me that it is on two busy roads and therefore it is quite noisy, even in the small garden. One street is also a feeder road to a hospital, so you hear an ambulance with a siren every few minutes. The house is also quite noisy and you can hear the neighbours, especially at night. The immediate neighbourhood is also a bit of a transit area, for example there are no cafés and restaurants right in front of the house. The contact with the landlords is very friendly and the maid is very cordial!

Great Roman Experience
The apartment was spacious, well laid out, and comfortable. The kitchen was well-stocked and had everything one would need to make simple meals. Check-in was easy and the instructions were very clear. We had a very enjoyable stay. For planning purposes, guests should know that the apartment is not in the central part of the city and it is difficult to find a taxi. Its about a 15-20 minute walk to the center of town.

Kitschy cute
Full of art rugs and that reflected the unique personality of the owner. All and all quite charming. Located off a quiet garden on the ground floor, the apt. offered a welcome respite from the noisy streets of Rome. We would stay here again.

Very enjoyable
The apartment was clean, well-equipped and decorated with interesting art. The beds were comfortable and linens plentiful. Very peaceful evenings made for undisturbed sleep. The other side of that coin is that the apartment is a bit isolated, and it was necessary to walk for 10 to 15 minutes to get to the closest commercial areas. We got used to calling for taxis.

Very nice stay!
We had an excellent stay in the colourful and spacy apartment in the villa, including breakfasts and nice afternoon drinks on the leafy terrace/garden. Good location: off main tourist trails, yet close to everything. Many thanks to the helpful owner Elisabeth and her kind team.

Artist gem in the heart of Rome
Our adult son and my husband and I spent 10 glorious nights in Elizabeth's vrbo. Rome is a city of beauty and history and this rental extends the beauty to your living space. The tile work and furnishing are lovely, and the beds comfortable. We are lovers of books and art and our only regrets that we couldn't access the incredible Italian book collection. What a gift to be surrounded by books and art. If there is one other regret is that we couldn't enjoy the cool Mediterranean night breezes because sleeping with the shutters open was a bit noisy. Elizabeth was an attentive host and we would highly recommend this rental.

Comfortable - Quiet and safe - Great Location - Charming
This colorful villa was our oasis for our 11 day stay in Rome! ... Ideally located just 10 minutes from Piazza del Poppolo, and the Borghese gardens. Our hosts Liz and Marc recommended some great restaurants, and their villa was well stocked with maps and guide books on Rome.

Thoroughly Enjoyable Stay
Our stay in the apartment of Marc and Elisabeth was an absolute pleasure! It started even before we arrived. Marc arranged for us to be picked up by Maurizo at the airport, and taken directly to the apartment which was extremely useful. It was much more convenient and much less difficult to get to our Rome “home” in this manner. We were met by the housekeeper Celine who showed us everything that we needed to know and made a few suggestions for getting around the area, she was wonderful. Maurizo also took us back to the airport, again arranged by Marc and very convenient as we were picking up a car at the airport for the next leg of our trip. The apartment itself was fabulous. It was everything that we expected from the listing, it could not have been better. The main bedroom was very comfortable, and our two boys enjoyed the space in the second bedroom. Having the two bathrooms also provides flexibility when 4 people share the apartment. The shower was adequate, and plenty of hot water. Having laundry available was a huge plus. We did not need to pack too much for our extended stay. The time that we stayed there the weather was quite hot, having an air conditioned home to come back to after a full day of sightseeing was a real pleasure! We also felt very secure; the apartment is inside a walled and gated compound, with an additional very secure front door for the apartment. We did not have any concerns about security. The location was also very nice. We were 5 minutes away from bus and tram lines to the Vatican, Piazza del Popolo, and the Colosseum and Forum. Getting around was very easy. I will say that there were not many restaurants right around the apartment, but we weren’t spending the evenings there anyway, we were in other parts of Rome. Overall, we could not have been happier with our stay. We would certainly recommend this apartment to anyone who was looking for a good place to stay in Rome and the hosts are extremely helpful and accommodating.

Comfortable & Spacious
We're very glad we chose to stay here. We were with our 2 adult daughters and there was plenty of room for all of us. The apartment is lovely and we especially enjoyed sitting out in the private courtyard and having a glass of wine. There are 2 bathrooms, but only 1 has a full shower (which is very tight). The kitchen had everything we needed. There is even a washing machine. Lisy (the host) is very gracious and helpful. She arranged transportation to and from the airport for us which made things much easier for us.The neighborhood is about a 10 minute walk from Piazza Popolo and quiet. We would love to stay here again when we return to Rome.

Christian FILHOL

Great experience in Rome
This is a beautiful apartment, clean, comfortable and elegant. The location is simply perfect, very close to the city center but in a quiet and green area. We had a great experience even if it was a very hot summer because the AC system works very well and the apartment was always fresh and comfortable. The landlord Lisy took care of all the details, so we found food and coffee for breakfast when we arrived. There is a lovely couple, husband and wife with a dog, that are at the entrance of the building and take care of everything you need. They were always present if we had questions or needed help, and I found this extremely useful especially to get directions. Great experience !!

Fantastic Apartment
We cannot say enough good things about our stay in Rome. From our initial on-line inquiry until our check out and departure, everything went perfectly. The booking process was easy and efficient. Marc went out of his way to make us feel welcome even before we left home, and gave detailed instructions on check in procedures. We were greeted at the apartment, given a thorough tour of the property, and made to feel at home. The water, coffee, bread and fresh apricots were great (and unexpected) touches. The apartment itself was clean, very well decorated, and very comfortable. We would recommend the apartment to anyone. Excellent service!

Beautiful, charming apartment!
My family of six adults was warmly welcomed by Elizabeth after incredibly helpful information and swift responses from Marc. The place was gorgeous, spacious and yet still homey. It was located within a 7 minute walk of the metro at Piazza Popolo, so it was centrally located to all sites while retaining its local charm. Small gelaterias, pizzerias and a market were close by as well. I would recommend this picturesque home to everyone and would return again in a minute.
