A beautiful house with a perfect view!
We had a great time at Pam's house. She was responsive and helpful and her house is lovely. We paddles Nantahala Lake and searched for waterfalls during our visit. A perfect location to enjoy birding.

Beautiful home- Terrible accessibility
Beautiful home with amazing views. However, the home owner misrepresented the access to the cabin. Extremely sharp hairpin curves and steep climbs. Our problem was I inquired and was told it was no problem even though I asked specifically about this issue.

Wonderful Mountain View House !
Had a wonderful stay at the Mountain View House. We loved everything about our visit…the amazing views, the house, the bird life, all the windows, and just all the special touches. Such a beautiful setting to relax and refresh at, a slice of heaven. One of our favorite rentals; we can’t wait to visit again! Darlene & Greg Hall

Beautiful house and setting
Pam’s house is gorgeous inside and out. Amazing mountain views, very comfortable and beautiful accommodations, well stocked kitchen, and a great deck for relaxing and looking out at the mountains. Pam was extremely communicative and helped with many suggestions. Definitely one of the nicest VRBO properties you’ll find.

Treehouse with hot running water!
We were elated with the mountain and forest views. Enjoyed watching the continually changing clouds and the variety of birds. We told friends it was like living in a treehouse with hot running water! The decor is tasteful, the kitchen fully equipped, the beds comfortable, and the library very rewarding. We enjoyed the fireplace on chilly mornings and the deck on warm afternoons. Mountain View House is a lovely, quiet haven.

Amazing!!
We had such a great time at Pam's house! It was an amazing property with the most beautiful mountain views, fully equipped kitchen and everything we needed was there. The drive got a bit confusing and nerve racking at some point, but if you follow Pam's directions exactly and drive cautiously, there should be no problems. Pam herself was an incredible host, always kept in touch, responded quickly, helped us with any issues we had and was so sweet! We really loved our short stay at this place, and would absolutely come back soon!

Perfect Mountain Retreat
My husband and I’s experience with the booking, payment, communication with owner, scheduling, etc could not have been better for this property. Can not say enough wonderful things about the owner, Pam, truly! We had a death in the family and services occurred during our scheduled trip at the house. Pam was more than generous in working with us to move dates around so that we could do both. The home is a mountain retreat. The pictures do not do it justice! Views of the ridge and lake all along the back side of the home are gorgeous. The home itself is beautiful with it slate fireplace and thoughtfully decorated interior. The outside of the home is modern but natural looking. Pam keeps the house very well stocked. Towels, toiletries, kitchen tools, cookware, a large grill, wood for the fireplace, even birdseed for the bird feeders hanging from the exterior edges of the home are filled to the top, just bring your own personal necessities and groceries. The home is exceptionally clean, which my husband and I breathed a sigh of relief over during these times. There is also a binder provided by Pam of all the trails and other activities to do in the area. We hiked 3 of the trails she suggested in the binder. Wonderful experience that we will definitely repeat. Book this property and you will not regret it.

Wonderful Place
The house is beautiful and very comfortable. The kitchen is fully stocked with gear - we were able to make Thanksgiving dinner without difficulty. Communication with the host was excellent - very proactive and responsive. The only downside is that the last mile to the house is a steep gravel road with hairpin turns. It is fine once you get used to it but can be a bit nerve-wracking the first time.

Mountain veiw cabin
If it is a view with privacy you want this cabin is spectacular! The view of the mountains is incredible. Large deck for your morning coffee or evening dinner. When you walk in the cabin it's like you are entering someone's personal home, not a rental. Everything you could possibly need is there. Pam was great communicating with and the check in was a breeze. Here's a few pointers before going. Shop before you go. Make sure you have gas in your vehicle. The road going up and down the mountain is tricky as well as the signage. The cabin is at the top of the mountain so the drive is roughly a mile up and down. Ask questions! This cabin is 4600 ft. up. Check in in the daylight. Driving the road at night could be a problem if your not familiar with the area. Over all, beautiful home, beautiful view! Great host!

Perfect mountain getaway
We absolutely loved our stay at Pam's place. The house is on top of a mountain with an amazing view. It's bright, spacious, airy and super clean. The kitchen was well equipped and had everything we needed. Really loved seeing all the different types of birds that would come visit the feeders. We went on a 12-mile hike and didn't even have to get in our car to get to the trail, you could connect to the Appalachian Trail from her house. This is a perfect base for nature lovers who also likes the comfort and luxury of a clean, relaxing, modern house. Pam was an excellent host, great communication and put a lot of thoughtful touches in the house for her guests including a huge guidebook to help you get to know the area. She spent considerable time cleaning the place before we got there, which we greatly appreciated. All the positive reviews are right, this is the kind of place where you'll wish you'd stayed longer. We were there for 4 nights and wishing we could come back and stay even longer.

Almost Heaven!
What a wonderful location and property! We (3 adults) had an awesome stay at Pam's beautiful home and would have gladly stayed for a few more days if it had worked out. It is definitely a great place for 'getting away from it all' and de-stressing. We had a fun time hiking various trails, but enjoyed some downtime afterwards. Pam was very responsive to any questions from us and we highly recommend her property to anyone who wants a beautiful mountain getaway.

Great Stay
The house is Awesome, great views of the mountains. It is not far from the lake at all. It is an Open floor plan, as said in prior reviews the pictures don't do this place justice. It is really nice inside. Pam was great to work with and I am already looking forward to going back next year.

Hard to get to but worth it
If you want to feel isolated/have privacy, this is for you! The trip up the mountain off the paved road is best suited to an SUV but my Lexus sport sedan (low road clearance) made it with a couple of anxious moments. Once there, it's worth it. Beautiful view of the mountains off a private balcony with all the conveniences of home and a great CD library. Unlimited hiking trails, many with stunning vistas. Stock up before you get there and don't plan on eating out every night as there is one restaurant within less than 30+ minutes and the nearest grocery store is @ 30 minutes away. But you dont rent a mountain top house in rural NC for the restaurants, right?

Amazing mountain retreat!
Great place to get away from it all, in a modern house on the mountain! The view of the mountains is amazing. Nantahala Lake is at the bottom of the mountain. We saw a number of beautiful birds on the porch. If you’re lucky late at night you can see flying squirrels on the porch. There is a marina close by called Lake’s End Marina where we rented a boat. We went river rafting one afternoon with Carolina Outfitters and it was just a 30 minute drive away. The Wifi was slow but that could be on account of a storm while we were there. On the whole it’s a wonderful property and we would love to return.

Private mountaintop getaway.
Mountain View is a wonderful house set into the woods overlooking Lake Nantahala. It’s a steep drive up but worth it. If you like hiking you can get on the Bartram trail, or there are boat rentals not far away. Weather wasn’t great for us so we enjoyed relaxing at the house with books and cards watching the clouds come over the mountains. Also if you like birds, there are plenty visiting the bird feeders. Thanks again Pam!

About the host

Hosted by Pamela Shade Murphy

Host profile image
I'm a person who values privacy, quiet, contemplation and nature. My friends are for life. Having sold a small retail food business, I now own a small garden design/installation business which is the thing I have always wanted to do. As a state certified master gardener, I also volunteer my time in many ways and in many communities. I split my living year between Atlanta, GA and MountainView House, where I hope to live full time one day. I enjoy most outdoor activities, but especially, hiking and bird watching. I'm an avid reader of history, natural science and literary novels and journals. I was once addicted to Breaking Bad and The Wire (probably still am) and I really enjoy well written serious dramatic as well as seriously funny TV and movies. I'm a native of Chicago and return often to the suburbs there to visit my mom (she's 100 :) who lives independently in the home my dad built in Northbrook, IL. I hope to stay active and independent all my life and I believe that the key to that is to always enjoy and have fun at what you do even if you could make more money doing something else.

Why they chose this property

I bought this beautiful place after spending a July 4 weekend in the Snowbird Mountains and seeing only 1 other person on the lake there. I began searching a bit farther south in The Nantahala range of the Smokies, where there were/are even less people, although after 25 years, there are a few more folks who have caught on to this magic place.
After two years of searching, this home came on the market and my realtor called me to come up and see it, even though it was for sale at a price higher than I had budgeted. One look out the western windows and I knew, THIS IS IT. I made an offer that day and have never looked back for the past 20 years. For me, it's not even the house, it's the place, itself, where I always feel closest to nature and her living things. The scene is always changing and always beautiful and haunting. There is always peace to be found here.

What makes this property unique

My home is situated on two (mostly vertical :) acres at the top of a mountain. Most of my very few neighbors are seasonal, but I live here on and off, year 'round. It is the incredible quiet and peace that I find here and yet I am only 140 miles from my home in Atlanta. I feel that The Nantahala is another country entirely, so close to Nature as it is and rugged enough that not that many people live here. I also enjoy the face that the road leading to my home is like a private driveway, really, and when the trees are in leaf, you would never know my home was there. When the trees are bare, my home is more exposed, but the mountain views are so much more dramatic! The spring and late fall are wonderful times to visit for this very reason but not many people take advantage of this fact and so I happily return for longer visits, especially in November, when it is still fairly warm and in the spring during bird migration. This is definitely a spot for serious birders or for anyone who enjoys the color and song of migrating birds. Also, bald eagles have returned to the lake - a wonderful indicator of a healthy environment. Travelers should know that this is not a rental property per se, but a private property that is sometimes rented. Therefore, my guests will find quality furnishings and art and probably things that I should not display because of their portability. I believe in trust and the honor system, though, and have found through the years that most people are honest and trustworthy which gives me great hope. I have been disappointed only 3 times in 18 years and I consider that a good record. Guests need only behave as they would in their own homes to have a good experience for themselves and for me.
