Beautiful location
The cottage was very cosy and the view and environs were superb. The cottage was very clean with the exception of the mattress. It was stained, cold and uncomfortable as it didn’t have a Pillowtop or protector and it was obviously quite old; I could feel the springs when I lay on it. Aside from the bed I had a lovely stay. It really is the most beautiful place.

Peace, Beauty, and Comfort
We spent a perfect week at Mark's home at the tip of the gorgeous Applecross Peninsula. It was perfect in the way that love is perfect-- you love it because of its flaws, not in spite of them. There was something perfectly charming about being in a location where the "local" grocery store was a 30-min drive away and as big as my dining room at home. The water was perfectly fine to drink in spite of its mineral-laden color. And everything else was just breathtaking: the peace, the views, the walks, the reliable internet (if you choose to connect to the outside world), the atmosphere of the cottage itself, Mark's communication and warm hospitality... I could go on and on. It's really just the perfect tranquil hideaway. If you are lucky enough to find it free for your dates, book immediately! You won't regret it.

A perfect little cottage for two
Fearnmore Church is a wonderful place for two to stay, whether you plan to 'hide away' or not. The place has been thoughtfully 'modernized' without sacrificing its character, and it is well-stocked with all the necessities and conveniences we could have asked for--so one could, indeed, 'hide away' all week if one were inclined to do so. But it's also in a great spot if, like us, you wanted to go out and explore. Mark, the owner, was a very kind and gracious host, providing us with lots of helpful information about the area before we arrived, and he stopped by for a welcoming chat on the eve of our arrival. I suppose the litmus test for any lodging is whether one would want to return to it, and here the answer is an unequivocal and enthusiastic 'YES'!

Beautifully presented cottage with excellent views.
Beautifully presented cottage with regular visits from the local wildlife. Nightly visits from pine martens feeding on the nuts and peanut butter. They were very friendly and not bothered by us watching and taking photos. Also attracted some field mice who were very quick at taking the nuts. The only issue was there was no off road parking although traffic is very light. The verges tended to soften up with the rain. Applecross village pub provides excellent meals for those not wanting to do too much self catering and is approximately 30 minutes away.

About the host

Host profile image
I live in Applecross at the south end of the Peninsula, in Applecross Manse, just beside Camusterrach Pier, which was formerly a stopping point for the MacBrayne's ferry which serviced Applecross and the Hebrides. Now the famous Beallach nan Ba road over the mountains is the main artery.

I have a croft which I use for managing my herd of Highland cattle. The cows for the most part calf on the croft from mid-May, but, to the delight of tourists, they wander the hills and are seen wandering readily. Once a year they walk to Applecross Estate and provide a rare photo opportunity as cows and weeks-old calves plunge into the Applecross River and swim to the Estate on the other side. There is a bridge but they refuse to cross it!

Why they chose this property

The property was formerly a corrugated iron Church which served the hamlets around Fearnmore. Before the First World War the population of the village approached 150, but both wars robbed the coastal villages of their menfolk and the crofting way of life fell into decline, nevertheless, the church was then an important focal point for Highland life and reflected the integrity of its people. Today there are 7 cottages in the village with two permanent residents. The Church is outside the hamlet in an isolated and elevated position.

This part of Applecross has a timeless charm beyond words. It leaves one feeling unshackled from the everyday and staggered by the moods and drama of its surroundings. One is instantly smitten.

What makes this property unique

Fearnmore Church"s charm is partly in its unique character as a romantic hideaway for two set amongst the staggering beauty of the sea and the Torridon Mountains. It's isolated position means that no other dwelling is in view from it, only mountains and sea. And it sits in its own 21 acres.

Visitors are surprised on arrival at its dimensions. Its photographs fail to convey adequately the sense of space and light, and, the outside flooding into the cottage so that one is always connected to it. It is an unconventional build modelled on the corrugated iron church which preceded it.

There is access to the shore and the old drystane harbour in the hamlet behind where otters sometimes appear.
