About this property

The Old Forge, 4 Bed Modern Barn Conversion in The Yorkshire Wolds

Accommodation at The Old Forge is all on one level making it ideal for families with young children, or family members with limited mobility. Converted from what used to be a busy working Forge, our family run holiday cottage is both characterful & modern. The property features beautiful stone floors with underfloor heating throughout and is equipped to the highest standards. Please be aware that we do not accept pets.
In equipping The Old Forge Holiday Cottage we have tried to provide everything you will need to enjoy a comfortable and relaxing holiday. All our furnishings and fixtures are of a high quality and we hope that it is our attention to detail that our guests will remember. If there is something we haven't considered please let us know!

Situated in The Great Wold Valley alongside a stream known as The Gypsey Race and overlooking an area of outstanding natural beauty, the Old Forge Holiday Cottage is ideally situated as a base for visiting the Yorkshire Wolds, The Yorkshire Coast, the North Yorkshire Moors and the City of York all of which are within 30 miles.

West Lutton is a picturesque village situated between the bustling market towns of Malton and Driffield. The views from The Old Forge of St Mary's Church are second to none. A couple of miles away in Weaverthorpe both The Blue Bell and The Star Inn are excellent choices for dining out, as is The Triton Inn at Sledmere.

Still Yorkshires best kept secret The Yorkshire Wolds are a range of low rolling hills which rise from the River Humber at Hessle and run in a crescent shape through stunning countryside to the dramatic cliffs at Flamborough Head and Bempton north of Bridlington. The gentle hills make it an ideal area for both walking and cycling. The area is unspoilt and rich in history and there are many historic houses and churches to visit. The chalk grassland of The Yorkshire Wolds is a rare habitat in Britain and is a haven for wildlife.

The Yorkshire Coast towns of Bridlington, Filey, & Scarborough are all less than 20 miles away, each offering a different experience for those of you who enjoy a day out at the Seaside. Do not miss a day out in the maritime town of Whitby, the inspiration for Bram Stoker's Dracula and now home to the annual Gothic Weekend.

The North York Moors railway based in the market town of Pickering just 15 miles away is the gateway to The North Yorkshire Moors. It offers 18 miles of steam railway running through spectacular moorland scenery. You can stop off in Goathland also known as Aidensfield in Yorkshire TV's Heartbeat and the bewitching Hogsmead in the first Harry Potter film.

The Historic City of York is just 25 miles from The Old Forge Holiday Cottage. Highlights include the majestic York Minster, The Jorvik Centre, York Castle Museum and The National Railway Museum. You can also explore many of York's hidden secrets which are often tucked away in the cobbled streets, snickets and snickleways.

Nice village but a car essential
We had a very pleasant week at the Old Forge. We were 6 in all and the accommodation was more than adequate. It was very clean and comfortable. A good location for exploring North Yorkshire. It was a pity there wasn't much to do in the village (No Restaurant/Pub/Cafe) and some of the facilities further afield were dissappointing.

Perfect !
We had a lovely stay at The Old Forge. It was clean, spacious and very well equipped. This modernised barn was very welcoming, the beds were so comfy and the bedding lovely. We spent many hours cycling around the area and visited lots of beautiful villages in addition to the popular coastal resorts. The hosts are very considerate and helpful. Thank you very much for making it a fantastic holiday. PS: We loved the welcome pack too, especially the cake…thanks again!

Idyllic staycation
The Old Forge is stunning. Spacious and beautifully decorated throughout, it has everything you could possibly need for your stay. There were 8 of us in the property for the week and it never felt crowded. The beds were very comfortable and the water was always piping hot. The countryside is right on your doorstep for local walks. The cottage overlooks the village church and it was so nice sitting outside in the early morning with a cuppa, just taking in the tranquility, and listening to the birds. There is so much to do in the vicinity, or a short drive away, we were never stuck for something to do. Caroline was a fantastic host and made us very welcome. The goodie basket was a lovely touch and Caroline’s lemon drizzle cake was delicious. I managed to persuade her to part with her recipe and made one the day after our return! We all fell in love with Archie - he’s adorable! We thoroughly enjoyed our staycation and will definitely be coming back in the future. Thank you again Caroline and Nigel

Welcoming and comfortable accommodation at the Old Forge Cottage, West Lutton, Yorkshire
The Old Forge Cottage offered a warm welcome for a week of family and friends gatherings. On arrival we were greeted by Caroline and enjoyed home-made lemon drizzle cake with our Yorkshire tea, then later indulged in the other Yorkshire treats left for us. The cottage is ideally situated for walks in the Wolds or trips to nearby Malton, with its delicious food stores, restaurants and pubs, to York and to Whitby, where we enjoyed a Halloween experience, with visiting Goths. We were always happy to return to the warmth and comfort of the Old Forge Cottage and enjoy the stroll to the donkeys with our little granddaughter. A perfect Autumn break for all of us.

Great accommodation, well thought out, loads of room, very clean and comfortable
Would definitely recommend with no hesitation. Everything you could think of was supplied, lovely welcome basket, flowers and home made cake 😋. My parents use walking sticks and there wasn't anywhere in the accommodation they had a problem with. Walk in shower in the bathroom for them a real bonus. Our family aged from 86 down to 4year old and there was something in there for everyone of us, games, dvd's. Fully equipped kitchen including washing/dryer machine, dishwasher, fantastic when there was 8 of us. Caroline made us feel very welcome when we arrived and not forgetting the wagging tale of Archie when we returned from our days out.

Home from Home
A lovely little village with an easy to find building next to a quiet church. We were met on our arrival by Caroline , who escorted us around and explained everything. We especially liked the tourist standard info section for local attractions and places to eat and drink, the comfortable beds and luxury linen, convenient for the local pub.

A REALLY ENJOYABLE HOLIDAY
WE HAVE HAD A REALLY ENJOYABLE STAY AT THE OLD FORGE, THE PROPERTY WAS IDEAL FOR MY FAMILY WITH LARGE CLEAN ROOMS AND WELL MAINTAINED FACILITIES. THE LOCATION WAS CONVENIENT TO BOTH YORK AND THE COAST, ALL THE DRIVES THROUGHT THE WOLDS WERE A PLEASURE. THE INFORMATION REGARDING LOCAL ACTIVITIES, ATTRACTIONS WERE WELL INFORMED AND SO VERSATILE THAT IN SOME INSTANCES IT WAS HARD FOR US TO ALL AGREE ON THE SAME ACTIVITY. CAROLINE & NIGEL WERE GREAT LAND LORDS AND IF WE WERE UNABLE TO FIND THE INFORMATION NEEDED IN THEIR GOOD INSTRUCTION BOOK THEY WERE MORE THAN HAPPY TO ADVISE US. THE ACCOMODATION WAS SO GOOD WE WERE AS HAPPY TO STAY IN OR TO GO OUT ON PLANNED EXCURSIONS. I WOULD CERTAINLY RECOMMEND IT TO MY FRIENDS AND FAMILY.

Perfect getaway!
We spent bank holiday weekend at The Old Forge and it was perfect for us! A lovely welcome from Caroline on the Friday evening and we all felt instantly at home. Lovely bedrooms, v comfy beds, really good showers, and everything you could ever need in the kitchen and open plan dining/lounge area, we had the perfect surroundings for us to relax as a group of friends. Plenty of space for 8 people in a cottage on one floor and the underfloor heating made it nice and cosy. A 45minute drive on the Saturday and we were in York, a 30minute drive on Sunday and we were in Scarborough, so it was a great location for us for two day trips. We'd booked a private room at The Blue Bell Inn (recommended on The Old Forge website by Caroline) for dinner on the Saturday evening, where we had brilliant food at very reasonable prices. I can't recommend this place enough and wouldn't hesitate in going back another time.

our stay at The Old Forge
Our stay at The Old Forge was a very happy and comfortable experience. The property was perfect for our needs, very clean, homely and well maintained. I was celebrating my 70th birthday and received a birthday card together with a bottle bubbly which I found really thoughtful. I would most certainly recommend the property to anyone I know without hesitation, it was brilliant. The Star Inn at Weaverthorpe was great value for money, all seven of us enjoyed our meal.

Little gem
Beautiful and very comfortable property. You're smack bang in the middle of the wolds but still within easy reach of York, the coast and so many other attractions.

About the host

Host profile image
I live here in the Yorkshire Wolds with my husband Nigel, our 2 teenage sons & our golden retriever Archie.

Why they chose this property

We bought the property in 2001 as our family home. The single storey outbuilding which was once the village Forge initially served as a workshop for my husbands construction business. After several years of making improvements to the main house we turned our attention to the outbuildings, which were in a very bad state of repair. We decided to demolish the building completely & rebuild it using reclaimed materials. The result was The Old Forge holiday cottage. We love living in the Yorkshire Wolds & enjoy welcoming guests & introducing them to this little known area, which many of them describe as a hidden gem. The artist David Hockney continues to paint the unique landscape of The Wolds and we have some prints of his paintings in the cottage.

What makes this property unique

The village is ideally located as a base for visiting the Yorkshire Coast, the market towns of Malton, Pickering & The North York Moors & the City of York. There are literally hundreds of attractions to visit locally including many National Trust properties, Homes & Gardens such as Castle Howard, Scampston Estate, & Sledmere House, Museums including Eden Camp, The Yorvik Centre, & The National Railway Museum, & the North York Moors Railway. Children are well catered for, with Playdale Farm, Flamingoland, & the beaches at Scarborough & Bridlington. Malton is also becoming a centre for foodies with an annual Food Festival, several micro breweries & TV Chef James Martin at The Talbot Hotel. There are some very good eating places just a stones throw away from the cottage.
