The terraces and the façade of the pool side building are finished in local stone. Accommodation details: there are two bedrooms, two bathrooms, a fitted kitchen, lounge and dining area. Outside there are two terraces, linked by a path suitable for wheelchair users, a swimming pool and a pool side kitchen with dining facilities. The second bedroom is furnished with twin beds and a double wardrobe, and air-conditioning/heating. A fold-up bed is available for a 5th guest.
The family bathroom has a full length bath with a shower and shower screen, a vanity unit, toilet, and bidet.
The living room/dining room has large picture windows on adjoining sides of the room, so guests may fully appreciate the views across the valley. It is tastefully furnished with two sofas, and a dining table and chairs for five persons; the TV reception includes Spanish tv; guests can watch UK internet tv, using their own laptop, tablet etc. connected to the tv; an Amazon Fire Stick is available. Please discuss internet tv with the owner at time of booking.
There is an air-conditioning/heating unit to keep this area of the house at a comfortable temperature all year round, and an efficient log-burning stove is an added attraction.
The kitchen is fully fitted and equipped with a full size gas hob and electric fan oven, a microwave oven, a dishwasher, a fridge-freezer, a toaster, iron and ironing board.
There are terraces on both sides of the house: there is extensive terracing around the swimming pool; there are hardwood garden furniture, parasols, sun-loungers, and tables and chairs; the second terrace, which is situated outside the kitchen door is equipped with a table and chairs; it is a wonderful sun trap for alfresco meals, and to enjoy sunny weather in winter, autumn and spring. There is a wooden fence between the house and the pool area.

Pool side kitchen/dining area: this building overlooks the swimming pool with mountains in the background. This spacious facility includes a fitted kitchen, a gas barbecue, a microwave oven, a refrigerator, dining furniture, original paintings, and wide opening doors. There are hand-crafted, natural stone pillars and terracing, with a wooden pergola with a natural coverage of grape vine to provide shade. The washing machine and tumble dryer are located in this building.
Energy saving measures:- solar panels provide domestic hot water with excellent water pressure for showering, virtually free of charge. Solar energy, an efficient electric heat pump and a thermally insulated cover ensure that the swimming pool can be heated economically for use all the year round. The combination of both an efficient wood burning stove and air-conditioning/ heating units ensures that this house can be heated efficiently for use all year round. To encourage energy saving, we have chosen to lower our rental prices, while, at the same time, to charge guests for the amount of electricity consumed at the current cost price of £0.13/€0,14 per unit; the number of units used will be calculated at the end of the rental period. Some electricity is from solar panels. Guests who want the pool heated to coincide with their arrival, pay £50 in cash, when they arrive, towards the cost of pre-heating the water; if the actual cost is less than £50 they will receive a rebate. We take a damage deposit of £250/€350 from guests on their arrival at Casa Sofia; we return this less the electricity charge before guests' final departure. Paintings in the house and pool side kitchen are Nalini Cook's original works and are for sale.
We will be flexible regarding arrival and departure times, if we can.
We allow guests to bring their pets, so long as these guests ensure that their animals are under control at all times, and are kept off the furniture in the house.
In January 2024 guests, who were staying at the house, shot a video on the property; the link to watch the video can be seen on our page on clickstay.
A brief summing up:-
Casa Sofia is situated in a very attractive, elevated rural setting amidst an orchard of almond trees in undulating countryside with mountains in the background in Santa Maria Del Cerro 6 km from the picturesque, friendly village of Villanueva De La Concepcion in Andalucia, Southern Spain. From the house there are wonderful views across a beautiful valley. The area is visited by a variety of birds, including predators, and is ideal for walking, as the weather is often cooler and less humid than on the coast. The owners, Nalini and Barry Cook, live nearby. Nalini is a practising artist and teacher, and offers tuition to guests in her studio. The house is well equipped. Wifi internet is available. There is air-conditioning in the living room and bedrooms, and a wood-burning stove for the winter months. From the dining area there are brilliant views through the expanse of picture windows. The lounge is tastefully furnished with comfortable sofas, dining table and chairs for five persons, and a television. Throughout the property there are many original works of art painted by Nalini Cook. Abundant hot water is supplied by solar energy. Outside there is a covered heated pool, and two terraces, linked by a path suitable for wheelchair users. Near the pool there is a large covered fully equipped pool side kitchen with dining facilities. The terracing around two sides of the pool and the façade and floor of the kitchen is finished in locally cut natural coloured stonework.
The house sleeps 4/5, as a folding Zed bed is available. All the windows have mosquito screens. Two terraces are connected by a path to enable access for wheelchair users: the larger terrace surrounds the pool on three sides; the smaller terrace, located near the kitchen entrance is equipped with a table and chairs for breakfasting etc. It is a sun trap in Autumn, Winter and Spring. Sun loungers, outdoor furniture and two fixed sunshades are provided. Grandad😊
The property is so remote, it provides peace, tranquility & isolation, just what we wanted The pictures do represent the excellent views down & up the hill, and the impressive bells of the 1000s of goats regularly hearded around the hillsides. Ideal place to escape....the real world.

Spectacular views
The most important part of this property is the location with absolutely spectacular views everywhere. Truly stunning. The house is spacious and laid out well. The hosts were lovely and very helpful all the time. Unfortunately the weather was not great and because of the cool rainy weather the inside was also cool and damp. We had the wood stove going with a fire whenever we were home which warmed up the living room pretty much but overall the house was damp. The house is like a cottage that needs updating generally . The furniture seems old and is uncomfortable, the kitchen is very large with a great fridge and a good cooktop and oven (once we figured out how to use it), the microwave could be updated -there was a dishwasher but we didn’t use it. The dishes in the kitchen were fine But we had to ask for a couple larger pots and pans (which the Hosts provided quickly), some of the utensils could be updated as well. The bbq also worked well. We bought our own coffeemaker after trying several that the host provided that weren’t satisfactory. Even though we were quite conservative about using electricity, it still cost us almost 350€ for our time there and that was with spending about 100€ on wood from the host and local farmers, so that is something to keep in mind that adds to the cost. Initially, the bed was very cold but we discovered that the only mattress cover was one with plastic so the bed always felt cold and damp. We sort of rigged up a different mattress cover pieced together from other blankets etc and removed the plastic one and that made the bed so much better. As I said previously, all the furniture should be updated. The main bathroom was great, the ensuite has a challenging layout with the toilet almost in the shower. The shower itself worked great although the water definitely splashes all over the toilet and floor, not a huge issue just something you need to pay attention to since the floor gets quite slippery. The local town has very basic amenities but nothing special. The larger town about 16km away, Antequera, is a great place with tons of restaurants, shops, bakeries, grocery stores, and lots of cultural and historical sites - a great place and not too far away. Unfortunately, we didn’t get to use the pool or even the patio much but they looked great and there was lots of outdoor furniture. We loved all the animals around, you drive through a goat farm to get to the house and there were horses close by.

My name is Nalini Cook. I was born in Kingston upon Thames in England. I worked in England as a teacher, lecturer and HMI Inspector for Art and Design, while developing my own work. I relocated to Spain in 2002. My studio is at my home in the countryside near Antequera in Andalucia.
I consider myself an international artist, as I have exhibited all over Europe, and my work is represented in private collections across the world. I exhibit regularly with other artists and was for many years in England a selected artist and member of the Manchester Academy of Fine Arts.

My inspiration comes from recording images of people and landscapes from my journeys in Spain, Italy, France, India, Sri Lanka and Australia. I am also inspired by the visual changes I observe within the environment where I practise my art: ie experiencing the many different landscapes of Andalucia in the area where I live and work.
I use oils, acrylic and mixed media to evoke the rich colours of Indian and Mediterranean landscape. Layers of paint, ink, ochres and mixed media are combined and reformed to create texture and mood, and I often use natural yellow ochres collected from mines in the South of France to evoke heat and colour.
Remnants of medieval cave paintings and frescoes from Italy, India and Sri Lanka also inspire my work. A certain ambiguity is created: preconcepcions are challenged by fusing images gathered from my Sri Lankan heritage with the influences of western culture.

Why they chose this property

We bought this property in March 2002; the house was completed in December 2001. There was no electricity supply, and the access dirt track was too steep in wet weather to leave the property except in a 4x4. It was just a house, with fallen earth up against its back wall. But the views were wonderful!
November 2017: electricity supply installed (June 2002); a retaining wall built at the back of the house (July 2002); the access road laid with concrete (September 2002); a wood-burning stove installed(December 2002); a swimming pool built (June 2003); terracing built around the pool (May 2004) etc. Plus the views, of course.
We stayed in Casa Sofia until moving into our own house later in 2002; we soon realised Casa Sofia had the potential to be a wonderful holiday home for guests staying short and long term. They tell us they value staying at Casa Sofia not only for its facilities, its wonderful views and the privacy afforded, but also they enjoy being in the village of Villanueva De La Concepcion, walking down to Pastelero for an excellent meal to be driven back to the house by the owner, and visiting the many places of interest within convenient travelling distance of the house.

What makes this property unique

We first came to the land where Casa Sofia was later to be built, in April 1999, The sun was shining, and the land and surrounding hills were green and beautiful. Later in the afternoon we witnessed our first sun set from the same spot as we have seen many more since that day. What else makes Casa Sofia a special place? The aesthetic and the spiritual: Nalini's paintings on the walls; the views; the tranquillity and the seclusion. The practicalities: the property ticks most of the boxes which many guests regard as essential or desirable: private heated pool for use in all seasons; air-conditioning/heating; UK TV channels; broadband internet with wifi; good access roads passable in virtually all weathers.
