About this property

Coastal Architecture at Shobac Farm - Schoolhouse

Restored and redesigned by internationally celebrated architect Brian MacKay-Lyons, the historic 1830s Schoolhouse offers a luxurious and relaxing getaway at Shobac Farm. Accommodating up to 6 guests, this charming two-storey, fully equipped house is ideal for couples, families and small groups seeking at any time of year. Featuring a private, outdoor spa, BBQ and master bedroom with stunning views of the LaHave Estuary.

**The space**
The second level features the master bedroom with Tempur-pedic queen bed, stunning views, and designer furnishings and details. A second bedroom with two single beds overlooks our Troop Barn and pastures. There is a full bathroom with bathtub, shower and heated tile floor, as well as a private laundry room. The ground level maintains the feel of the original Schoolhouse open plan, and features a fully equipped kitchen with European appliances, a spacious and bright dining and living area with contemporary leather furniture, wood stove, pine floors and restored wooden furniture.

Schoolhouse is equipped with WiFi internet. A sofa bed in the living area can accommodate additional guests. An outdoor hot tub and BBQ are available for guests to use. Firewood, for the pit and the interior woodstove, is provided. For outdoor sports enthusiasts, a storage area can be provided for surf boards, bicycles, etc. Shobac Farm Wool Blankets and Butcher Cuts can be purchased onsite. Our Seaside Cottages at Shobac Farm lie within a secluded ‘Lost Village at the End of the Earth’ where the LaHave Estuary meets the Atlantic Ocean and Hirtle’s Beach. Guests have access to the 1.5-acre site featuring many outdoor activities and shared amenities surrounded by rolling pastures, hiking trails, a few private homes and the Atlantic Ocean.

Located in Upper Kingsburg, 20 kilometers from the Town of Lunenburg’s UNESCO Heritage District, Shobac Farm is truly a magical place in a secluded location ‘far from the maddening crowd’, and is home to a flock of sheep, two highland cattle, two large and friendly Leonbergers, gardens and gated pastures. Local sites and attractions include Hirtle's Beach and Gaff Point Nature Preserve, as well as restaurants, cafés, bakeries and shops - a short drive or cycle away in nearby Rose Bay, LaHave and West Dublin (across the LaHave River), picturesque Lunenburg, and beyond.

**The history**
My wife and I found this place 30 years ago on one of those Sunday drives. It was at the end of the end of the Earth, which turns out to be where Champlain made his first landfall in 1604. We found these ruins of French fishermen's houses probably from the 1500s and Swiss-German from the 1750s. They were all abandoned when we arrived. It was a farming and fishing village that had completely died, a ghost of a lost village at the end of the Earth, with just the bones left.

I began clearing the land with my own hands, which took me 20 years to do. It had a sense of inhabitation and was a wonderful revealing of what used to be a cultural landscape in the New World.

It’s a magical place. You can kind of taste that in the landscape through the stone walls, wells, and the ruins.
