The Heron House - Lakefront Home

THE HERON HOUSE

*If you are looking to host a large gathering please contact us about renting the adjacent property, which we own, as well. (See Three Gulls, HomeAway listing 4017238). Together they comfortably sleep 11-14 depending on preferences.*

Our waterfront comfortable, completely remodeled home (2019-2020) is family-friendly and available to guests. It's a ranch style house built in 1960 and situated in a family neighborhood in which many homes are vacation/second homes. Most rooms offer a beautiful view of lake. This relaxing, comfortable home sleeps 5 (a king, three twin beds, , a queen-size hanging/swing bed on the porch). Features include a spacious screened in porch with lots of comfortable seating for gatherings and a swing bed.

There's a large multilevel deck which leads to a wooden staircase and on to the lakefront, where the fishing is at its best! We have a fire pit available for bonfires and marshmallow roasting. If you're coming to tournament fish, this home is ideal for both tournament participants as well as their friends and family members who may observe the action on Pickwick Lake from the decks or screened porch.
We are pet-friendly (limit 2 pets) with pets fees applicable ($25 for one, $35 for two pets, payable upon arrival).

NO CHILDREN UNDER AGE 12. EVERYONE 12 AND OLDER IS CONSIDERED AN ADULT AND MUST BE INCLUDED ON RESERVATION.

We also have a small, private pier with boat mooring that may accommodate your boat docking needs. Water levels and conditions fluctuate, so inquire about current conditions if water activities are in your plans. Feel free to bring paddle boards, jet skis, canoes, boats and other water toys.

Our Pickwick Lake home is located just five miles west of the quaint Norman Rockwell-ish town of Tuscumbia, recently ranked among the top ten most charming small towns in Alabama. It's about an hour west of Huntsville/Madison County on one of the most peaceful and lovely sections of the Tennessee River.

PRIDE LANDING LAUNCH RAMP IS LOCATED ABOUT FIVE MILES WEST OF THE HOUSE BY ROAD, AND ABOUT FIVE MINUTES BY BOAT.

Florence Marina/McFarland Park (256)768-1299 is about 23 minutes away by road, 15 minutes by boat. BOAT RENTALS MAY BE AVAILABLE THROUGH THE MARINA.

Local fishing on Pickwick, Wilson and Wheeler Lakes is easily accessible. We can recommend fishing guides, as well.

Among LOCAL ATTRACTIONS ARE the popular RATTLESNAKE SALOON, a restaurant in a cave, (recently featured on Food Network), IVY GREEN (the birthplace of Helen Keller) and CANE CREEK CANYON NATURE PRESERVE (featuring "The Most Spectacular View in Alabama," according to Backpacker Magazine), two ROBERT TRENT JONES GOLF COURSES about 15 miles away. The University of North Alabama is about 20 minutes away, in nearby Florence. Be pampered at Willows Day Spa about 5 miles away in Tuscumbia. Also check out THE DISMALS, about 45 minutes south in Phil Campbell, Alabama, in Franklin county.

The lake is beautiful all times of year, although water levels at our pier and conditions do fluctuate seasonally, with water level lowering in the Fall and Winter, and rising to normal levels in the Spring through Summer. The serene, lovely location, along with spectacular birding opportunities make this home perfect for a get away.

There are two bedrooms, the master with a king bed and private porch access and another with two twin beds that can be combined to a king upon request. There is an additional twin bed, as well as a swinging bed on the porch that welcomes nappers.

Sleeps 5.

There is one shared bathroom, but there is an additional outside shower with hot water, great for those coming in from a day on the river. There's also a large vanity with sink and mirror in common area.

Comfortable place
The only thing disappointing about our stay was the weather -- we did not get to enjoy the covered deck because it was too cold! The place is clean and charming; and the view is wonderful. Great place to relax and recharge for the new year. Plenty of indoor things to enjoy in the area.

Relaxing Weekend
My friend and I enjoyed sitting on the screened in porch watching the boats and barges go by. Fun little decorative touches all over the house made it a great place to stay.

About the host

Hosted by Judy Kirchner

Host profile image
We (property owners Tim and Judy Hendrix Kirchner) grew up in this area and we were fortunate to be able to buy this house located adjacent to The Three Gulls, the home where Judy grew up, listed through this site since 2015. The property number for VRBO is 4017238, if you'd like to see our history/reviews as hosts over therapist five years.
We both graduated from the University of North Alabama in nearby Florence; Judy was a teacher for many years and Tim went on to the University of Alabama, Huntsville, Engineering School, earning a degree in electrical engineering.
We lived and raised our children for almost 20 years in the Marshall Islands on the island of Kwajalein, and now we split our time between Huntsville, where Tim continues to work in missile defense, and our lake houses on Locust Shores, where Judy loves fulfilling her dream of owning a bed and breakfast.
We have two grown children, Julianne, a nurse who's married to Michael, the world's best son-in-law, and lives in Huntsville, and Graham, a doctor in Orlando, Florida, and is married to Katrina, a lovely, hardworking nurse and most wonderful daughter-in-law we could have.

Why they chose this property

We have gathered in this home for family vacations and celebrations since completing renovations over the last year. The beautiful, restful atmosphere is especially appealing. It's almost entirely new-- a cheerful, bright, happy place for friends and family to gather to enjoy water activities, play games, watch the abundant birds and waterfowl, fish, read, or to just relax.
This house is not in an exclusive gated community, and is NOT the Hilton. Please don't reserve it if you're looking for a fancy home. You won't be happy here. If, however, you're looking for a cheerful, homey, comfortable, clean and peaceful property in the country, away from the busy-ness of town, this may be the house for you.
Feel free to get in touch with specific questions.

What makes this property unique

Great for tournament fishing participants! Directly located on Pickwick Lake, part of the Tennessee River, this area is known for great fishing year round.

Located just 10 minutes from Pride Landing Launch Ramp, and only 13 miles, (about 20 minutes by car, seven miles by water) from Florence Marina/McFarland Park.

There's plenty of boat parking in our double driveway. Fishing from our private pier is another option, or guests may rent our canoe or kayaks for fishing or just relaxing on beautiful Pickwick Lake.

Ask about lake conditions if water activities are part of your plans. Lake conditions vary throughout the year.

Great for family members and friends of fishing tournament participants as you may watch the action from the screened porch or decks!

Bird watching is phenomenal here! Bring your binoculars for upclose views of bald eagles, osprey, herons, egrets, many kinds of geese and ducks, and an array of songbirds.
