Welcome to “Sun on the Brow.” Situated on the border of two of Ontario’s great cottage regions, South Frontenac and Rideau Lakes. Opinicon Lake is part of a series of lakes navigated by water travellers of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Rideau River/Canal System since the late eighteen hundreds. Davis Lock to the south, draining into Sand Lake and beyond towards Kingston, and north through Chaffey’s Lock into Clear Lake and towards Ottawa. “Sun on the Brow” is a beautiful setting of four cottages on a property total of 11.25 acres with over 750 feet of lakefront. The Cottages are set on a point of approximately 1.5 acres.
“Blue Skies” Cottage is a three-season cottage with A/C, Wi-Fi and Netflix. The cottage has been completely renovated inside and out. We decided to leave the original Cedar beams and rafters exposed, creating a vaulted ceiling. New windows have been added to give you a clear view of Opinicon Lake from the Great room and Kitchen. The cottage now has a full bathroom, allowing for an indoor shower. Blue Skies cottage has two bedrooms. A Queen bed in one, and the other bedroom has two singles. There is also a Sleeping Loft with a Twin bed for the adventurish. Fresh linens are provided, and the beds are made (after all, who wants to start a vacation making beds?) It has a newly renovated, bright, fully equipped galley kitchen with a fridge, gas stove, microwave, and coffee maker with coffee included. The main living area has a dining table, sectional couch, comfy chair and Big screen Smart TV.
Outside, Blue Skies cottage has its own Fire Pit area overlooking Opinicon Lake, Dock, Broil King BBQ, a picnic table, and access to the rest of the property.
‘Sun on the Brow’ also has a family-friendly Boathouse retreat. This 900-square-foot standard room has a pool table, table soccer, air hockey, games, puzzles with a farmhouse table to set them up on and books. The Boathouse has a panoramic view over Lake Opinicon for those who want to curl up and take in the pictures. Great for rainy day activity or anytime.
Opinicon is a peaceful lake, but the amenities are all close by. Less than 5 minutes away is Chaffey’s lock. Here, you will find two marinas, Brown’s and Franklin’s. Browns has a small general store and an LCBO/Beer store outlet. Skycroft Campground, a few minutes down the road, rents Pontoon boats by the day or week.
The historic ‘Opinicon Inn’ is the main attraction in Chaffey’s Lock. Three restaurants with indoor and outdoor dining, an ice cream shop and 10 acres of beautiful grounds are the framework of this recently refurbished and renovated charming Inn**
For hikers and nature lovers, the ‘Catarqui Trail’ passes through Chaffey’s on the north side of Opinicon Lake. For more experienced hikers, there’s Foley Mountain in Westport.
Numerous golf courses are within 20 minutes to get your swing on!
Shopping and strolling in the lovely waterfront villages of Newboro and Westport are also less than 30 minutes away, with stores and restaurants and even a fantastic winery that serves delicious wood-fired pizza!
There is plenty of room for your boat at ‘Sun on the Brow’ (If you have one - boat launching at Chaffey’s lock). We also have three small fishing boats for rent (boat and fishing license required). In the centre of the cottages, you will find the Kayak Shack, which holds the 7 Kayaks, 2 Paddleboards and Canoe, and Adult Lifejackets. The water is crystal clear and warm, as Opinicon is not a deep lake. Water shoes are recommended as the lake bottom is not sand. True to the Rideau Lakes area, it can be weedy.
It is our sincere hope that you will fall in love with this little piece of heaven as we have and that cottaging at ‘Sun on the Brow’ will leave you with a lasting experience that you will want to repeat year after year.
Sincerely
Your Hosts
Bill and Kim
