We love it so much here, we keep coming back (as per our previous reviews ). Colin & Penny remain wonderful, thoughtful hosts, the space is cosy and comfortable, and the view out to the castle is superb. Thanks again for another delightful stay!

Absolutely one of the best places we’ve ever stayed! Clear communication upfront, Collin met us when we arrived with a warm welcome. Highland hospitality with treats and whisky. The view and access to the castle can’t be beat. Comfortable bed, great shower, really just fantastic all the way around. My only complaint is I’m now searching for “butteries” in the states when I get home.

The Castle Byre is a stunning, high end property. It’s extremely well appointed and exudes luxury comfort. The host, Colin, is very warm, welcoming and responsive. I highly recommend the property. We will definitely stay here again and again.

We appreciated the warm welcome, the goodies provided, loved the comfortable bed, the outlook onto the castle, and the quiet countryside feel. Definitely worth dropping into Beinn for a coffee and a book in Dufftown.

We keep coming back to the Castle Byre, and we love it so much. The space is comfortable and cosy, the view of the castle ruins is wonderful, and Colin & Penny are excellent hosts - super helpful, while also giving you plenty of space and privacy. It's now one of our favourite spots to stay, anywhere in the world.

Excellent Property!!!

We have been to Scotland 15 -20 times and the last 10 yrs used Vrbo and this is the BEST place in all aspects that we have stayed at. The property was exceptional and the owners were very gracious and friendly. Location was excellent for traveling the area. Very peaceful and beautiful area.

The best hosts location and cottage

We enjoyed our stay in the Byer very much. The cottage was extraordinary beautifull, clean and the location and views were simply the best. The hosts were so kind and helpfull. We highly recomend it to every one who loves Scotland, its beautifull hills and distiliries

Fantastic Stay near Dufftown

This property is beautifully maintained with loving attention to every detail. The views of the castle are breathtaking. The hosts had kindly provided us with samples of some local scotch and baked goods. We cannot say enough good things about this wonderful place!

An absolutely ideal stay in Speyside. This property is inch perfect and an ideal base for an unforgettable holiday. Colin & Penny are warm hosts with a keen eye for detail not only in design, but in their accommodations. They also alerted us to the aurora being potentially visible during our stay, and with the gift of a clear highland night sky: we were gifted with a memorable show above Auchindoun Castle. If you’re looking for a place to be able to enjoy self-catering, and explore this gorgeous region of Scotland, look no further. We hope to return again someday soon.

Amazing!!!!

Our stay at The Castle Byre was excellent! Such a beautiful space with beautiful views. The property was super clean and cozy. Colin and Penny were wonderful hosts, with excellent recommendations and provided us with some treats. It was just my wife and I on this trip, but we easily could have brought our children and had a comfortable stay. Thank you!!!

Perfect Highland stay

Hosts were so welcoming and property was top notch with everything needed to make you feel right at home. Lots of extras to make you feel pampered as well. Can’t imagine a more breathtaking view. Quiet and peaceful countryside but short drive to interesting sites. No one in our family really wanted to leave. Plottting return visit now. 😉

Everything & More! Did not want to leave!!

The Castle Byre is a10 stars out of 5!!! You couldn't ask for a better place to stay or get better hospitality. Colin and Penny provide an amazing experience with their thoughtfulness, hospitality and attentiveness. I cannot say 1 poor thing about our experience in Dufftown or The Castle Byre. The accommodations are exactly as they are on the website. This is one booking you will never regret!

Idyllic Highlands location with history on you doorstep

The property was exactly as described, a beautifully restored old barn with plenty of useful and thoughtful features. It was very clean, comfortable and made us feel at home in the Highlands. Colin (& Penny) were wonderful hosts with lots of information about the area and the local surroundings. Nothing was too much trouble and the little extras such as the biscuits, butteries (we’re converts), milk, juice and of course the Scotch were well appreciated. Strongly recommend, you won’t be disappointed.

Timeless Beauty and Peace

The accommodation perfectly suits the location aesthetically, yet offers contemporary and cozy comfort. The view from the living room inside or sitting outside on the porch is peaceful and awe-inspiring. The wild flowers accent the view of the castle ruins. The pheasants, sheep and common chaffinch lull you into the highlands' charm. The hosts, Penny and Colin, were helpful and interesting. We hope we can come back!

Amazing!

Colin and Penny were wonderful. The cottage, along with Colin’s collection of bottles and ceramics, was welcoming and beautiful. Colin is an architect and so was my dad, so we had similar interests. If you have a chance to visit, please do so. The Castle is why we came but Colin and Penny is why we will hopefully return! Clifton and Caroline

The Byre

It was more than we expected! Colin and Penny are great and wonderful hosts. Bed was comfortable however like all sofas in Scotland they were low and for a tall man, hard to get out of! Regardless of the sofas, we enjoyed the daily morning visits by the pheasants who walked by the patio door!

Beautiful Stone Cottage with a Castle View

We so enjoyed our Highlands visit in Dufftown, the heart of Speyside. Colin is the perfect host who designed the cottage adjacent to his home. He preserved many architectural details while making the space clean and modern. We especially enjoyed arriving to thoughtful touches in the kitchen - milk, butter, bread and our new addiction, butteries. A NE Scottish taste treat that defies explanation. Thank you so much Colin and Penny.

Stone walls, Sheep and a Castle

What a lovely place to end our 2 week trip through Scotland. A much-needed respite from the "modern world." Quite, perfectly appointed with TONS of local flavor. Colin and Penny were both delightful hosts and answered all our silly questions. If you book this (and I recommend you do) - be aware that there are few grocery shops within 20-30 minutes and the hours will be limited. No 24/7 Super-Market here (not that that's a bad thing)... Just need to plan ahead a bit and be ready to put it into slow gear.

Bliss!

We completely changed our Scotland vacation itinerary route to stay here (3 nights) based on the VRBO description and reviews. It was absolutely a great decision! The views alone were breathtakingly worth it, but when you add in the beautifully crafted space, the welcoming treats and amenities, comfy bed, seamless check-in-out, and great hosts, well, what more is there to say! Oh, and the pheasants - another unexpected treat. The location was so convenient to explore the Cairngorms and the northern coast. Colin was helpful in recommending some great spots in the Park off the beaten path. We always wanted to get back to the Byre though because we enjoyed staying there so much. Can't recommend it highly enough. Thank you Colin and Penny for a memorable, wonderful stay!

When can we come again?

Colin and Penny, our hosts were a delight from intial booking over a year ago, through to after our return. They were communicative and helpful and we were made to feel like nothing was a bother, even at Christmas! They went above and beyond and kept an eye on the winter weather and suggested we move the car so we didnt get snowed in. The holiday home, is exaclty that....a home. It was cosy and welcoming with personal touches and treats on our arrival. There wasn't anything we didnt have to hand. Excellent information book provided about the property and many guides on the area for us to browse. Amazing views and friendly wildlife. Underfloor heating was a absolute treat! Thank you for a lovely winter trip.

Simply amazing

Frankly I don't know to start. I told Colin & Penny when we arrived that we were speechless when we checked in to their incredible beautiful place. And 4 days later, we remained that way. I've stayed in many places around the world, and my spouse & I agreed that putting it all together, this is the one we'd come back to first and foremost. The attention to detail in the place itself, the provisions (we sampled the whiskies!), the light, the space, a warm fire, the castle, the flowers, the walks, the quiet, the peace, the wind in the trees, just everything about it we loved. And enjoyed meeting our host too, who told us a bit of history of the palce. Simply - thank you Colin & Penny. We hope we can return.
