Sobre esta propriedade

Gila, New Mexico-Land of Enchantment The Gatehouse is a sweet little cabin.

The Gatehouse at Bearpaw Ranch is perfect for a small family or couple. It is a handmade log cabin with high ceilings and lots of light! The bedroom has a King size bed and there is a cute sleeping loft with a trundle bed with two single beds. The cabin has a large fenced yard with a fire pit and picnic table. It is a short walk down to our ponds, with the Gila River just beyond that.

Ideal for hiking, hunting and fishing, Bearpaw Ranch is also close to Bill Evans fishing lake and a short drive up to the Gila wilderness. Our property lies on the Gila River and you will have complete access.

We have a large barn and fenced field if you are bringing your horses. Ideal for hunting in the fall and winter. The wilderness begins a few miles up the road. Perfect for hiking and climbing, and bird-watching. There is a wild-bird preserve just a few miles south of us. Of course the bosque here on the property affords great access to spotting numerous bird species.

Silver City is 40 minutes to the south and has many art galleries and restaurants. Bearpaw Ranch is a great place to stay during the Blues Festival, the World Class bicycle races, or the Wild West Rodeo. The hotels in Silver City fill up, but you can take the short drive out to the Gila and rest in the quiet and peace, refueling for another fun time enjoying Silver City's great events.

In the mountains north of Silver City you can visit the old western town of Pinos Altos, and continue up to the Gila Cliff Dwellings. A visit to the copper mines is also a must, with a stop at Lake Roberts on the way! There is a wonderful bakery and vineyard at the nearby town of San Lorenzo.

To the northwest of us is historic Mogollon with its art gallery, antique shop, museum, and fantastic burgers at the Purple Onion. Near Mogollon is the little village of Glenwood, with the state fish hatchery and the famous Catwalk. The Catwalk is a favorite hiking spot with a lovely picnic area. Also at Glenwood, there is an outfitter that provides horseback riding. We will be happy to connect you with them!

The night sky offers a magnificent and unequaled view of millions of stars, planets and the Milky Way in all of it's glory. New Mexico values our dark night skies and a quick google map search will reveal that Gila is by far one of the darkest places in our country. If you have never known (or did know but its been a long time) what it is to be able to stroll in the starlight, you really must come visit.

There is plenty to do in the area, but many folks find that they are content to walk around the property, visit our horses, spend a little time in the sauna at the Bathhouse near Vision Pond, watch our ducks swim around in the pond, or just sit and listen to the quiet. This is a perfect retreat if you just want to get away...far away from the rat race. This is real out-west country living.

RANCH EATS! There's just one drawback to how wonderfully isolated we are. No restaurants. But, we've solved that problem for you. We have a semi-retired chef who will prepare and deliver wonderful meals to you. It is a limited menu but all scrumptious!!! We will provide details at booking.

We have 3 cabins here that are all separated by a very distant & comfortable space. At least 200 yards apart with plenty of trees. Communicating with Rose prior to stay was delightful. Grace gave great information to fishing the Gila River. Cabin was super. Only a couple of hiccups...easy fixes. The white pups were adorable and Graces little dog and cat was a sweetie. The museum...I could have just camped out in there to take it all in.

The gatehouse at Bearpaw Ranch is simply the most peaceful and beautiful place i have ever stayed. My activities at the house included watching birds, clouds, and stars, reading, and resting. There are plenty of backroads, trails, and historic sites to explore in the area and the host has left great notes about all sorts of things to do. The host, Rose, was so sweet and made sure i had everything i needed.
Gatehouse and parking area. Shaded sitting area and fire pit are off to the left.

The cabin felt like home from the moment we walked through the door! Both beds very comfortable, nicely appointed kitchen, and good water pressure for shower. Very clean and cozy! The property was amazing and exactly as advertised. Ponds and river were great to walk around in mornings and all the friendly farm animals were fun to watch. Hosts are so friendly and accommodating. Also, the "museum" is full of antiques and unique items and is a must see while staying at Bearpaw Ranch. Quiet and peaceful place out in the remote part of New Mexico. Also the Ranch Eats chef made us the most amazing dinner after a long day of hiking. Definitely looking forward to staying here again in the future.

The gatehouse was extremely clean and had everything we needed after a day of hiking at Catwalk, ghost town cemetery,The Cliffs and a thrilling drive on Turkey Creek to the Gila River. The ranch was also wonderful to explore and meet all the animals! We especially liked the ranch dogs and the Jersey Cow! We hated to leave!

The ranch is a lovely place to spend time, with sample places to walk, to sit, to see the animals, to sense the history, just to be. The creativity of the owners is apparent and a joy.

Spent one of the best Father’s Day Weekend with my children

While our stay may not have happened at the most ideal time-much of the area was suffering from extreme heat and drought along with wild fires nearby. We were still able to find plenty to enjoy. It was everything hoped for and more. Beautiful, peaceful, full of nature’s best while riddled with relics of humans past. The cabin was cozy, adequately stocked, clean and cool despite the high temperatures. And the surrounding yard offered plenty of private space and seating to enjoy dinner outdoors and the amazing night skies. I would without hesitation consider returning.

Sobre o anfitrião

Anfitrião: Rose Shoemaker

Imagem do perfil do anfitrião
Hi there! I am Rose and my husband and I moved here from northern NM 41 years ago. He passed away in 2010 and I have been developing the guest ranch since then. In the fall of 2022 my daughter, Grace, and her husband Zac, and their children moved here to take over operations so that I can "retire". The work load was becoming too much for me and I have been so happy to have them here! This is a small ranch. We now have mostly retired horses and mules. We have 3 head of Longhorn cattle. We recently added a herd of Soay sheep. They are a nearly extinct breed of small hair sheep from the British isles. We raise heritage breeds poultry including chickens, ducks, turkeys, and peafowl. Our livestock all live cage-free and free-range. No coops or stalls for our critters! We gladly share farm fresh eggs with our guests, when available, and you might find that they are the best eggs you ever ate! As an antique nut, my husband collected too many articles to fit in our old house. Bottles, mining tools, old dishes, stoves, tools, tins, crocks....etc So, he built a building to look like an old west store and you are welcome to go in and look at my collection. I call it the 'museum'...but it is really just a place to house my dust collectors. It's fun! The Cliff/Gila community is an eclectic mix of folks who love the Gila. There is one little gas station, a library, a Senior Citizen Center, a community clinic, a school, and a few churches. The Community Center has tennis/pickleball courts, a basketball court, and playground for the kids. This is a wonderful community to live in, and we are happy to share it with our guests.

Por que o anfitrião escolheu essa propriedade

I have lived on this property for 41 years. I'm a New Mexico native and grew up in Albuquerque. I moved here because I fell in love with the Gila River Valley. The Gatehouse cabin was not here when we purchased the property. It came later as a 'mother-in-law' house. She didn't take well to how isolated we were and did not stay, so I decided to rent it as a vacation rental just about 17 years ago. We had built a similar cabin down on Vision Pond and added it to the ranch rentals 12 years ago. I have been so happy to be able to share this wonderful place with so many travelers. I have met great folks from all over the US, Canada and even some from Europe. See also the Pond Cabin Property #378579

O que faz essa propriedade ser única?

Our property straddles the Gila River with complete access to the river. We also have 4 small ponds and our guests are free to wander about the property and enjoy the river and ponds along with the bosque they create in a very private setting. I allow catch and release fishing. Many dog-owners love staying here because it is a time when their city dogs can really feel what it is to be free and unleashed!

We are on the edge of the Turkey Creek entry into the Gila Wilderness and many hikers love staying here because of the access to many great hiking and birding spots. We are also right between Glenwood and Silver City. A handy central location if you are hiking AND enjoying the museums, galleries and eateries of Silver City. I think the one important thing that my guests have told me they love the most is the peace and quiet. We live and work here and sometimes we are cultivating, cutting wood, making repairs, and in general just working...doing all the things that are demanded on a small farm and ranch. But, people still feel a sense of peace. We go about our business and our guests must just feel like they are part of the ranch. It is an easy feeling here that is unique and most everyone comments on it. There are no outside lights so at night it is really dark and you can see the moon and the stars in all their glory. There is abundant wildlife. You are likely to see fox, raccoons, javalina, coyotes, rabbits and lizards, and many species of birds. All of this wildlife and quiet, yet we are just 2 or 3 minutes off of the road. You can't see or hear the road from the cabin, but it is easy to get into and out of our little ranch and the paved highway leads right to the little village of Gila just 3 miles down the road It is a slower pace. It is less rules, more freedom. It is the desert southwest in the Land of Enchantment. I find that it is hard to explain. But, when you come...you will feel it.
