Stunning 17c cottage, a true home away from home, in a delightful heritage area
Welcome to Dyer's Cottage Yorkshire, a spacious 1 bedroom beautifully presented 17c cottage with high ceilings, a private sunny garden in the upmarket heritage Wainhouse district between Halifax and Sowerby Bridge.
* Stay here instead of a hotel where you have lots of room, a real 'home from home' experience and excellent facilities with a real ale pub serving great food as a neighbour.
Key Features
* Full of traditional character features yet offering 21c comfort and amenities
* Lovely sunny private enclosed garden with views
* Contemporary bathroom with bath and shower
* Superking size bed which can be 2 long twins on request
* Sleeps up to 3 adults plus baby
* Sofabed and travel cot available
* Close to all amenities including buses, trains, shops, pubs and restaurants
* Fast free WiFi and SMART TV
* A long history of the people who have lived in the cottage since 1777.
* Just 1 mile from Calderdale Royal Hospital, 2 miles from the Piece Hall, Halifax Minster and 6 miles from quirky Hebden Bridge. Just 4 miles from Shibden Hall, home of local legend Anne Lister aka ‘Gentleman Jack’ BBC/HBO tv series and in 'Happy Valley'
Dyer's Cottage offers singles, couples or small families something really special. What makes it really unusual is the family history of the cottage which has been occupied by the owners family for 250 years but possibly longer. Originally a farmhouse, it was subdivided during the late 18c or early 19c into cottages for Master Dyers, hence its name.
The spacious 1 bedroom accommodation, with super king size zip and link bed (or 2 twins) is fabulous with lots of character features like exposed beams, a mullioned window dating from 1650 and a superb fireplace with gas fire which looks like a woodburner but provides instant clean heat. It was sympathetically renovated in 2015 to create a delightful place to relax, maintaining all the character features yet providing an extremely high standard of comfort and style. Unusual for a cottage, the rooms are spacious and the ceilings are high so tall people are well suited though do be aware that a couple of doors are on the small side.
The spacious living room has a beautiful Yorkshire stone fireplace with a gas fired stove. The leather sofa seats 3 but also extends into a sofabed with a proper base and mattress for an extra guest. Watch the SMART 50" tv with freeview channels or enjoy the free fast WiFi available all over the cottage. Dine at an antique dining table overlooking the sunny garden with a view across to Norland Moor.
Taking pride of place in the bedroom is the super king Hypnos bed which is so comfortable and can be configured as 2 twins if required. The mood lighting, restored Victorian cast iron feature fireplace and old original gas light ooze character. Just imagine waking up to the moorland view from the bedroom window which can be enjoyed from bed too.
Relax in the contemporary bathroom with its pale grey porcelain wall and floor tiles and a long bath which widens at one end to have a shower with a glass screen. The digital Aqualisa shower is powerful and there is a hand held shower attachment too. The gas central heating boiler and the washer/dryer are hidden in modern white units.
Enjoy cooking in the small but perfectly formed kitchen which is fully equipped with an electric oven, electric ceramic hob, fridge with separate freezer section, microwave, small dishwasher, Nespresso Dulce Gusto coffee maker, toaster, kettle and lots of cooking equipment.
Come and stay here to indulge yourselves in your own personal and private space. Chill in the sunny, secluded garden or enjoy a Spa day nearby to ease away the stresses of modern day life. Then discover Yorkshire hospitality by enjoying a meal out at one of the many excellent dining opportunities in the area. There's even an award winning CAMRA pub, also listed in the Good Beer Guide, which serves excellent homecooked food as one of our neighbours.
There’s so much history around us as the cottage is in the Wainhouse area of Halifax and we are actually part of the guided heritage walk called the Wainhouse Trail which takes place a few times a year but if you miss it, we have a copy you can follow on your own. Wainhouse Tower, the tallest folly in the world, opens twice a month if you fancy climbing nearly 400 steps to obtain an amazing view from the top. Or you may be into outdoor pursuits and canals. Walking, cycling and golf are very popular and e- bikes can be rented locally. We offer our kitchen as a secure storage area. Halifax West End Golf Club is just a couple of miles away and welcomes visitors except on Saturday mornings.
The cottage is an ideal base for 1/3 people (plus baby) if you are a romantic, interested in history or an outdoor or canal enthusiast who wishes to explore the walking or cycling trails of the West Yorkshire/Lancashire border area of the South Pennines, Bronte Country or the Yorkshire Dales National Park. It is also close to the amazing art and music culture found in the renovated textile mills, alongside bars and restaurants and is easily accessible to Leeds, York and Manchester. Public transport is excellent. Halifax is a great base but also is a fabulous tourist destination of its own. The 19c town centre and industrial architecture rivals that of Manchester but the must see destination is the magnificent Grade 1 listed Piece Hall. Built in 1770 for handloom cottage weavers to sell their pieces of worsted cloth on a Saturday, it is an amazing double storey building arranged around a huge square. After a long restoration, it re-opened in 2017 as a vibrant shopping, cultural and entertainment centre. Housing individual shops, art galleries, bars, restaurants and cafes, as well as a modern museum and library, it regularly hosts live music events and is now the number one tourist destination attracting visitors from around the world due to its uniqueness. Close by is Halifax Industrial Museum and Halifax Minster, the parish church of St John the Baptist holding the body of Anne Lister.
Calderdale is now the latest media destination (setjetting) as it has featured in many recent tv series including “Last Tango in Halifax”, “Happy Valley”, "Gentleman Jack". This follows the real life of a local lady Anne Lister, who lived at the lovely Tudor mansion Shibden Hall in the early 19c. The latest of Sally Wainwright's dramas is the hilarious 'Riot Women' Come and see the filming locations for yourself!
If you have children, don’t forget to visit Eureka! which is the National Interactive Children’s Museum for children aged 1 to 12. PB's play zone is popular for children up to 6 years too. Please note that the structure of such an old building does not allow Dyer’s Cottage to be able to provide safety features such as stair gates or fireguards etc so if you bring young people, it is at your own risk.
Dyer’s Cottage Halifax Yorkshire is listed on a few sites where both you and us pay a fee. We also support book direct where our pricing structure is different. Search and find us.
A few points to be aware of.
* Stairs (be aware that the top one is higher) between the 2 downstairs rooms lead to a spacious landing with a window and a desk. Please note that it is not possible to put a baby gate at the top of the stairs.
* We can provide a travel cot and a high chair with advance notice.
* High quality Egyptian cotton bed linen and towels are provided as standard but feel free to bring your own by prior arrangement.
*The secluded, enclosed, sunny garden is a lovely feature of this property and seating is provided on the Yorkshire stone patio for you to enjoy the view.
*Please be aware that as the cottage is on the valley side, there is a drop from the top of the wall at the end of the garden to the pavement so a child will need supervision. However, we have installed a small wire fence too.
* There are 10 steps leading from the gate on the pavement to the cottage door which may prove tricky if you are not good on your feet and the path can be slippery at times.
Free on street parking is available nearby with no restrictions.
No pets allowed.
No illegal activities.
No smoking or vaping inside the property.
It is expected that the cottage will be left clean and tidy on departure although a final tip top clean is included in the rental cost so that our high standards are maintained for the next visitors. For the safety of housekeepers, we ask guests to empty all rubbish from bins into the dustbins outside the back door before departure.
We STRONGLY advise ALL guests to take out travel insurance as our cancellation policy is very clear on this site.
Please note that we cannot be responsible for loss of water, gas, electricity or Wi-fi as they are outside our control and in the event of a failure in service, we are unable to refund you for any inconvenience this may cause.

Sobre o anfitrião
Anfitrião: Jane Giorgi
I am fascinated by genealogy and the history of buildings and this is what makes Dyer's Cottage so special. The cottage has been occupied by my family for over 200 years but the first proof of this is the 1841 census when John Kenyon born 1777 was listed as living in it with my great great great grandfather, William, his youngest son born 1824. His son James, my great great grandfather bought the property from the estate of John Edward Wainhouse,( who commissioned the building of the 77m high tower nearby) in1887 and gave it to his daughter Julia, my great grandmother to live in with her husband and young son. My grandmother was born a little while later and lived in the cottage until her marriage. She was left the cottage by her father when he died in 1934 and decided to do a few improvements for her tenants. The cottage was then left to my mother and now it belongs to me. I then spent 6 months of 2015 supervising local tradespeople bringing it into the 21st century which involved creating drains for a bathroom, completely re plastering all the walls, laying floor coverings, re wiring the basic electricity there was, and creating a kitchen. I kept as many original features as possible in order to keep the character but added home comforts such as hot water, a gas powered logburner and gas central heating. I decorated it in neutral colours and have tried to blend modern decorations and furnishings into an old framework. It is truly a real "home from home" and was described by a guest in March 2018 as "exquisite"
I enjoy watching house programmes, thrillers and historical dramas on tv and particularly enjoy all those written by Sally Wainwright which are filmed locally like "Last Tango in Halifax", "Happy Valley" and "Gentleman Jack". I enjoy walking and have learnt many new skills whilst volunteering at a local hospice charity shop.

Por que o anfitrião escolheu essa propriedade
I have had a keen interest in genealogy for many years and feel very strongly that a cottage which has been in the family for so long, should remain in it. Unfortunately I am unable to live in it permanently at the moment so hope that by letting it to holiday makers, more people will have the chance to share in its amazing history. It was for many years owned by the owners of the local dyeworks, the Wainhouse family and the Master Dyer's were given accommodation in the neighbouring cottages. The last member of the family, John Edward Wainhouse left a distinguished legacy on the local landscape most obvious of which is a 77m tower, the tallest folly in the world, which is illuminated at night. With over 400 internal steps, it is now owned by Calderdale Council who open it on specific days of each year when it is possible to climb nearly 400 steps to the top gallery. People have even seen Blackpool 50 miles away!
Dyer's Cottage features on a Heritage Walk round this special part of Halifax called The Wainhouse Trail. Up to 40 people may join it on summer Bank Holidays and an expert guide explains all there is to know about the distinctive architecture and local history. We have left a copy of the trail in the information folder for our guests to follow at their leisure.

O que faz essa propriedade ser única?
A recent guest advised me to make more of the local area in which Dyer's Cottage is part of, with buses, pubs, shops and restaurants all within a 10 minute walk. The Wainhouse area has its own history and we are proud to be part of its heritage having been owned by the Wainhouse family in the 18th and most of the 19th centuries when Master Dyers at their dyeworks lived in the building. We love the old character features like the wooden ceiling beams in the sitting room which extend through into the neighbouring cottages, the beautiful fireplace with gas cast iron stove and the exposed stone wall with mullioned window dating from 1650 in the kitchen. We had to undertake a few restoration jobs, sometimes by different ways when the first didn't work. I am indebted to the great team of local tradesmen who helped me. We wanted to create a home from home experience for our guests so that it has the cosy feel of a cottage but the luxury of a hotel.
My husband has created the lovely garden from an overgrown jungle with massive hedges. We found extra paving slabs buried a foot down and bought more to extend the patio. We used stones from the wall where we created the landing window to edge the flower beds. The old kitchen sink is now filled with flowers. The cottage has the benefit of very high ceilings for a property of its age and the rooms are much more spacious than you may imagine. Rather than squeeze in 2 bedrooms, we decided not to compromise the upstairs layout, so created a large bathroom from what used to be the other bedroom. This has resulted in a large bedroom, a spacious landing/workspace and a luxurious bathroom.
