The Suran Valley is located in the heart of the Revermont region. The Suran River, which originates in the Jura department, quietly winds its way through karst terrain where its waters sometimes disappear into an underground channel. A tranquil valley where the water flows unpredictably. As you stroll through it, you can admire mills, fords, meanders, and castle ruins—all reminders of a rich past.
Must-see:
The “Pierre Fiche” menhir (Historic Monument): In Simandre-sur-Suran, along the ancient Roman road, stands the department’s only menhir. It dates back to 2500 BC (the Bronze Age) and is 3.80 m tall.
The Chartreuse of Sélignac, founded in 1202: This imposing building stands on the road leading to Corveissiat. Before setting out on a crusade, the Lord of Coligny donated the lands of Sélignac to the Carthusian Order. From 1211 until 2001, monks lived in Sélignac.
The three fords on the Suran River (Middle Ages).
