Summary:
In the heart of Savannah's thriving Design District, this two-story carriage house is the perfect getaway with the historic ambiance you expect in Savannah! Nestled in ivy with a spacious courtyard, this is one of the most charming homes in town!
The Space:
This is the most charming, "Savannah-centric" home! This carriage house was built in late 1800s for the Main house that sits behind it.
Carriage Houses, also known as coach houses, were outbuildings, usually behind the main house, where wealthier residents kept their horses & buggies. The carriage drivers were responsible for the care of the horses and the equipment used. These drivers sometimes slept in the upper hay lofts of carriage houses. Horses, tack and the carriages were on ground level.
This particular mansion had 2 carriage houses, almost like a double garage. The Charlton Carriage House is on the corner of Charlton Lane and Whitaker Street.
Upon entering into the charming living space with original 1850s brick walls & fireplace (only decorative now) guests have a spacious living space with dining table that doubles as a work station as well. Open the shutters to allow tons of natural light inside!
The kitchen is small but fully-equipped with every cooking essential, a drip coffee maker, stove, fridge and dishwasher.
Upstairs is the bright bedroom with a king bed and generous storage - ideal for extended stays. The full bath with tub/shower combo and double vanity is en suite.
Guests are encouraged to take advantage of the ivey-drenched courtyard with your private table and chairs. Great for sunny lunches and evening cocktails.
In the courtyard is a small shed with a washer and dryer that are for your use but also shared with guests in the next door cottage.
Nearby attractions include The Sorrel-Weed House, Green-Meldrim House, Mercer Williams House Museum, and the Fountain at Forsyth Park.
Head North just a short walk towards the National Landmark Historic District center, with Broughton Street being the go-to for shopping and dining. Both City Market and River Street are a 15-minute walk from this home.
