Our short stay was good and check-in was easy. We were allowed to drop our bags early beforehand which was very helpful and appreciated. Communication was extremely delayed (days or not until the next day), which made us feel like we were just waiting for answers. The back door was broken. The host replied the next day saying the handyman was replacing the next day (after we would be gone) and the front door had chunks of wood missing, which was more of a cosmetic issue than anything. The dishwasher flooded when we ran it before we left but was told to leave it and it would be serviced. The outside could use a coat of paint but the inside was nicely decorated, clean, and provided everything described.It would be helpful for future guests if the host could be more accessible via text or even using a management company. I know people are busy but planning is a must when it comes to BHI.

We typically receive very positive feedback about being quick and responsive, so I’m disappointed that wasn’t your experience during this stay. We are aware of the back-door lock mechanism, and the replacement has already been ordered and is scheduled to be installed in October. In the meantime, the door remains securely locked for safety, and guests can enter and exit through the functioning front door. We also appreciated you letting us know about the dishwasher so we could have it serviced promptly. We’re glad you found the home clean, nicely decorated, well stocked, and that the early bag drop made your arrival easier. Thank you again for staying with us and for sharing your feedback.

Beautiful home in an exquisite location. The house was clean and had plenty of space. We have stayed in many places through VRBO and chose 4 stars. Furnishings and decor were beautiful and comfortable. The check in policy is very rigid regarding early check in. The coffee bar was sparsely stocked, as well as limited towels. It was wonderful having a golf cart. If you enjoy biking the bikes that are provided are very small cruisers. Great location- close to the beach.

Prior to renting I contacted the owner with a few questions as suggested in the listing. Owner offered a reduced rental rate eliminating VRBO. She did not return calls as promised. We rented through VRBO at a significantly higher rate than what the owner quoted. Upon arrival at the rental, the back door latch was broken. The front door key didn’t work. Maintenance arrived the next morning. They spoke to my husband and decided to return to install the latch when they had the appropriate amount of time. Shortly thereafter I received a message from the owner.‘Maintenance left because we had a number of dogs. Once we paid the additional 250, she would reschedule maintenance.’ I previously conversed with the owner that I had ONE service dog. Departure morning maintenance arrived. My husband spoke to them. They were adamant that they never spoke with the owner about our dog or several dogs as the owner purported. They didn’t even know the owner!The house was not clean, food bits on table, sand throughout, stains on mattress sides, rugs filthy, several air vents missing, several outlets damaged. Master bedroom had large ceiling vent that had significant water damage. (My husband struggled with his breathing by third day. Possible mold.) See photos The house wasn’t portrayed as stated. Listing and photos inaccurate and deceiving. Communication unsatisfactory. We were excited to have a wonderful Island vacation. Sadly, we were extremely disappointed.

We’re sorry your stay did not meet your expectations and would like to clarify a few points for future guests. The front door lock was functioning properly; the Andersen lock requires the handle to be lifted before locking or unlocking it. Regarding the maintenance visit, our team contacted us after arriving and reported that multiple dogs were present inside the home. The reservation reflected three guests and, to our knowledge, no pets other than the one service dog previously discussed. Because the dogs were inside, the team chose not to enter and the repair was rescheduled. We have worked with the same trusted cleaning and maintenance teams for more than 10 years and have not previously received complaints regarding the cleanliness of 303 Whale Head Way. This experience is very different from the feedback we typically receive. We also want to clarify that the images included with this review do not depict 303 Whale Head Way or any area of our home, so we cannot speak to where those photographs originated. We take legitimate guest concerns seriously and will always follow up on anything that needs attention at our property.

Ït had the right dynamics for the few days we could be here. Loved the bicycle and the cart. It was a great time with family in a very special place. Played Pickleball, shopped for food and stuff, plus a coffee run even though we had coffee available. Sight seeing all over the island. Packed a lot in.

We love this house and have stayed here multiple times. The kitchen has all sorts of helpful cooking utensils and tools. We love that the house has a high chair and pack 'n play for our child - so we don't have to bring them. The whole house is clean and well-maintained; we love staying there and will definitely come back.

My new happy place

Great house in a beautiful location. The front porch is my newfound happy place and it was a great place to sit and read a good book, for the family to gather for some serious puzzle assembly and for the adults to enjoy a cocktail.

Great get away close to our favorite beach area

The house was perfectly located close to the park for our dogs walks. A short ride to the Shoal's Club and our favorite beach. I loved sitting on the front porch each morning and just relaxing.

Great stay once again

Not our first time staying here and won’t be our last. We love everything about it. In fact, we noticed there was a day’s gap in reservations so we extended our stay an extra day. Highly recommended

Welcome to Canterwood Cottage – Our Dream Home at Cape Fear Station!

After visiting Bald Head Island for several years, we knew we had found our perfect spot in Cape Fear Station. Canterwood Cottage is located in a place we, and all our guests, consider to be the ideal location on the island. Just a short walk from East Beach, The Shoals Club, and The Commons, it’s the perfect balance of convenience, tranquility, and natural beauty.

We’ve poured our hearts into making this home a warm and inviting retreat, and we can’t wait to share it with you!

Together with our children, friends, and family, we’ve made countless memories here—one of our favorites being watching shooting stars from our front porch under the clear, starlit skies.
