The Captain’s Retreat is a perfect spot for nature and water lovers. Relax at this peaceful place surrounded by conservation-protected woodlands and swamp. Well located to explore nearby attractions but experience serenity and quiet in the Carolina Lowcountry (19 mi to Bluffton, SC; 26 mi to Hilton Head; 21 mi to Savannah, GA).

Pet and family friendly. Three-bedroom, two full baths with a recently renovated master bath and walk-in shower. Spacious private backyard. Strong wifi and cable TV by firestick. Washer and dryer are in the utility room. Baby and beach gear available for rent upon request.

Kayaks, canoes, and boats are welcome and enjoy the nearby Savannah River, May River, or Calibogue Sound. The Captain’s Retreat is located in Purrysburg near the Savannah River with two boat ramps within approximately a mile—Beck’s Ferry and Mill Stone Landing. There is a place to launch a canoe or kayak in the Savannah River within short walking distance. The Savannah National Wildlife Refuge with hiking and walking trails are nearby (Argyle Island; Kingfisher Loop and Tupelo Trail approximately 10-12 miles away).

Brandy was very responsive. The house was lovely, comfortable, and inviting. We enjoyed our stay but were surprised to find the house is situated in a housing development with active construction being carried out between 7:30 am and 5:00 pm daily. Since we came for a quiet retreat, this was a bit disappointing.

The house was consistent with the pictures presented in the advertisement. The check in process was easy, and the house was clean and tidy. The host seemed very nice, and she asked for suggestions on how to make the stay better. The area has a great dog park about 10 minutes from the house and there is an abundance of activities and site seeing opportunities within 40 minutes of the house from Hardeeville to Hilton Head. We enjoyed staying in South Carolina for a month during the winter. The weather was great! Unfortunately, there is a major construction project underway in the development with 28 lots under some stage of construction from lot leveling to home building. We were there a month, and the project was in full swing with four house frames in process. It was a bit noisy in the mornings, a few very brief electrical outages and we lost the internet for a couple of days. We adapted to the construction by doing our sightseeing on weekdays during the day.

The house was just as described, tucked away in a quiet neighborhood. It was the perfect location within an hour of downtown Savannah, Tybee Island, Hilton Head Island and Beaufort.

Wonderful respite location

The house was very comfortable and very well maintained. The neighborhood is very quiet. WiFi worked perfectly. Brandt was awesome. Text messages were answered within an hour in almost every instance. Communication was fantastic. I would definitely recommend

Fishing trip

Great location, all the boat ramps are 20-40 minutes away for inland fishing and only a couplebof miles to upper and lower river launches. The river was way up during our visit, so we only went inland fishing. We did checkout the ramps and Millstone landing is very nice.

Home away from home

It was so wonderful, more than we could have asked for. Easy to.get too. Relaxing nd enjoyable for the time we spent there, we were on the move a lot. Like my title says it was truly a home away from home. We never had any problems, never needed to contact any one, we had everything we needed and than some. We really enjoyed the house, it was perfect.
This was our friendly owl that usually visited the tree out back everyday.

Family Vacation on the Savannah River

It was tough to leave! Beautiful home, beautiful property, short walk to an amazing spot on the Savannah River where my boys and I fished, while watching alligators swim by! Had some really nice family meals together in the large, open kitchen. Roughly 40 minutes to Hilton Head or Savannah, very centrally located, but in such a secluded peaceful area surrounded by trees on all sides. We loved the house, and the lovely story of the captain. We would definitely stay here again if ever in the area.

Great vacation place!!

The house was just what we wanted. We spent a few days in Savannah and Tybee Island so the location was perfect. The house was just as described and the neighborhood was nice and quiet. We took a walk to the river and just enjoyed nature. We had our fur baby with us and she loved the backyard. We would definitely stay again. Brandy was so easy to communicate with and was very helpful. Great stay!!!

Savannah trip

It was our first time visiting Savannah and surrounding areas. After a day exploring the city, it was very nice to come home to a peaceful home in the country. The property is very clean,furniture is comfortable.

Perfect escape!

Beautiful, peaceful place to stay. Very comfortable and clean. My 90 year old grandmother, mother and I all enjoyed our stay. We even got to see some deer and wild turkey wandering the backyard! Would definitely return. Brandy was quick to respond and super helpful!

Loved it!!

We had so much fun! The house was wonderful and private. We brought our dog and it was great for her too. We actually had a neighborhood dog come visit that was soo sweet. The kids enjoyed that dog too. The yard was big and the house is at the end of a road so I didn’t have to worry about vehicles driving by. The house is centrally located to so many different places! We spent our trip in Savannah both days but I wish we would have had more time to go other places. We would love to go back and stay! And there are books galore! So many neat books!

Great place

It was great. Has a manly atmosphere, but it was good. Reminded me of my grandfather. Only recommendation I have is the threshold in front of the the far right bedroom has the carpet tacks coming through & my SIL caught his foot on it. But other than than that, it was great. thanks for sharing what I assume is your Dad's place.

Rincon Visit

The site listed this #1 place for Rincon Georgia 7 miles away. Its really 36 min drive from Rincon but worth the drive if you love peace and quite in the woods. We enjoyed our stay. Very beautiful neighborhood with big 1 acre lot. Great for playing catch with the kids. Bluffton is 30 + min drive away. Mattress in masterbed was very comfortable. Furniture very nice.

Enjoyable Stay!

We enjoyed our stay in Brandy's home! Our dogs had a great time running around the large yard all week! We didn't see a single critter other than a deer in the woods! The reference to gators and snakes applies to those who go to the river, which is not bordering the property. We were working remotely, and the wifi was excellent! Our cell service was spotty, but we just used wifi calling, and we had no issues. I love to cook, and I found the kitchen to be very well stocked with pots, pans, utensils, and bowls. The appliances are newer and are in great condition! Brandy and her property manager Tam are so kind, caring, and responsive. Brandy texted us to see if we needed anything, and Tam stopped by to check on us as well. This is a new rental, and Brandy is working hard to ensure that her guests have a positive experience. The home is very convenient to both Savannah and Hilton Head. It's a perfect home base for anyone wanting to visit those two areas. Thanks, Brandy and Tam!

Brandy was very easy to communicate with, responded quickly. The house was great for us. It is clean, comfortable and welcoming. We had everything we needed in the kitchen, even a slow cooker, which was a plus. It was so nice to sit outside on the patio, surrounded by trees. The neighborhood is currently undergoing a change, houses are being built nearby. It did not disrupt us as we were normally out during the day and they’re not there on the evenings or weekends. The welcome book tells you about her dad, the house’s original owner. It was nice to know a little bit about him and see his touches. The only change-I would like to have access to the closet in the main bedroom. It is definitely not a dealbreaker. I hope to have the opportunity to return.

The Captain’s Retreat was the home of Captain Herb and River Dog, who are now hunting and fishing in heaven together. Professional fisherman and boat captain, Captain Herb followed his catch around the world for over twenty five years. During this time, he called the American Virgin Islands, Trinidad and Tobago, Venezuela, Uruguay, Hawaii, Samoa, New Zealand and Tonga his home waters.

No matter how far he traveled or how beautiful his port of call, the Carolina Lowcountry was his home. In 2005, Captain Herb made Purrysburg, SC—on the Savannah River outside of the Bluffton area—his new fishing and hunting grounds. For the last nine years, he was the Wilson Landing Marina Captain at Palmetto Bluff, on the scenic May River. He cherished his time on the Grace and all of the people that he met as its captain—fellow colleagues, residents, and visitors from all over the world. Known for his salty charisma and truly genuine demeanor, he adored sharing his knowledge of local history and ecology during boat tours and private fishing charters.

Captain Herb loved his home for its serenity and proximity to hunting and fishing spots. He was always in the woods or on the water. As his only daughter, the Purrysburg house has become my special place for retreat and memory. I am now sharing our home with you while I am away.
