Recommended for guests looking for a peaceful getaway, not just a ā€œroom for the nightā€. The perfect romantic hideaway in the true sense of the word! This remote hidden beauty is a 45 minute winding rural road from Eureka and Arcata. (We suggest you bring food and drink for your first dinner and breakfast.) If your schedule is full of in-town activities we highly suggest that you leave at least one day open to simply relax, sit still and take in all this breathtaking getaway has to offer. Our former artist studio has been completely renovated into a charming art-filled cottage. Overlooking Little Lily Lake located on 120 acres of private estate. Solar powered, two story fully equipped hideaway with internet access. Self-light gas fireplace for warmth.
The cottage is nestled into lush forest with open views of blue sky and swimmable fresh-water lake (no fish!).
Located near sunny Kneeland, above the coastal fog with plenty of hiking and biking opportunities. Mad River (Baduwat) swimming and fishing 10 minutes away. Hosts on site to assist with any requests or services. Spacious upstairs bedroom with view overlooking Lake is accessed by steep staircase w/ rails, not suitable for the physically compromised. Downstairs fold out couch/bed, full kitchen and bathroom with shower are located at ground level. Outdoor claw foot bathtub!

This property was better than expected! The communication and hospitality of the hosts was perfect. The property was magical due to all the details we could use: available outdoor bed and bathtub, swim lake with fountain, hiking trails, 2 peacocks visited the cozy cottage. Perfect spot

The photos do not do this place justice. The cottage was perfect, and the artwork added a bit of whimsy. The property was truly breathtaking, and the views from all of the windows were gorgeous. But even beyond that, the hosts are amazing. So glad to have met them. If youā€™re thinking about a getaway, you truly must experience this place.

Perfect honeymoon spot

This is a drive away from town but so worth it! Fickle Hill will forever be an inside joke to us now. The property is just stunning, and Phil and Jeanieā€™s whimsy is so awe inspiring. Perfect host, clear rules, cozy cabin and a great place to rest. Thank you!

We had such a wonderful time at this cottage. It is absolutely stunning! I have told all my friends about it. The hosts are amazing and it is so beautifully decorated with an amazing kitchen and the bed is perfect. My husband had one of his best night's sleep there. It is completely off the grid with its own well, pond and it runs on solar energy.

Marvelous, secluded stay in the forest

We stayed at 5 VRBO's on our recent 3-week trip to various places. This was the best. It is really "off the grid" so to speak. Hard to get to, a long ways from town, windy roads, but once the trek is made, it's very much worth it. If one is committed to TV watching, forget it. There is no TV. But there is WI-FI, but it's rather spotty. However, for my wife and I, this wasn't a drawback, but rather a positive. The hosts are the best, and they live right on the property, so anything you need, you just have to let them know what it is. They go out of their way to please. One thing I will say is that if you're an older couple, there are steep stairs to navigate to the upstairs bedroom. It's a beautiful property in the woods. Would stay here again if we get the chance.

Totally Awesome Experience!

Phil and Jeannie are SUCH GREAT FOLKS! They have a little slice of Heaven where we we felt privileged to have the opportunity to experience both the private hilltop cottage with terrific private, clear water swimming pond and numerous special, outdoor amenities we thoroughly enjoyed, including the ā€œnap timeā€ outdoor bed, sundeck on the pond, fire pit, charcoal grill and outdoor dining table with a gorgeous view of the scenery. Just canā€™t say enough great things about the people, wonderful conversations and exemplary location with outstanding home we stayed in on their property. Superb get away for couples!!!

Challenging drive but beautiful once there

The drive to the property (at least for the final 2-3 miles) is on a narrow road with potholes, windy roads, blind turns and steep drop offs. This nerve racking drive led us to a property where we were confused at first about exactly where to go, but eventually we did find the cabin. It is a gorgeous setting. The cabin itself is cozy and the bed is at the top of some steep stairs. The bathroom is downstairs so this presents a challenge for use in the pitch black in the middle of the night. We were attending a graduation at CalPoly and spending time with family in Eureka, so we did quite a bit of driving back and forth to the VRBO property. From that perspective it was not convenient. But if you are looking for an ā€œoff the gridā€, peaceful getaway in a gorgeous setting, the place canā€™t be beat. They even provided bathrobes, slippers and coffee/half-n-half for us. Wish we could have walked the trails around the property, they looked lovely. Phil was very nice and helpful once we arrived.

This was an anniversary getaway to the coastal/redwood area. We are somewhat familiar with the area, so welcomed a more remote stay location. This was the one!We were happily welcomed by the property owners and their cute dachshunds, who led the way from their main house to the cottage. We were given the tour with gracious hospitality. Long story shortened, pics do not do this property justice. The cottage was lovely, painstakingly constructed, as well as adorned. If a couple can't get comfy here, i just can't imagine what it would take. Stunning views from every window, from the porch, from the deck which overlooks the pond and fantasy yard surrounding, also to view the sunrise through redwood trees.The kitchen was perfectly adorned, nothing missing. The bathroom is on the main floor, with a tiny house shower. Amazing, is the antique bathtub affording luxury on the side deck! It has privacy curtains...no one anywhere near to need privacy, though.Back inside...everything is updated. Windows are the quality energy efficient type, keeping the house comfy. You'll love the gas wood stove, no real wood to have to haul, yet heats the entire cottage nicely.Go upstairs to the bedroom, with caution. Those stairs are about the most steep I've encountered. Haul yourself up using the handrails...not for the less than physically able. We used a (suppied) battery-op candle on a step for late night potty runs downstairs. Not a problem for us...looked at it as a mini workout.

Wonderful home, property and nature

Thank you Phil and Jeannie! Prior to our stay, we were in contact with homeowner Phil, who was most gracious with answering questions we had, and later showing us this home, of which he lives about a minute drive away from. This is a remote guest home to stay in, and it is very nice, charmingly and thoughtfully appointed, and has outdoor amenities we appreciated that we have not encountered at other homes. Additional to the home which was well stocked with supplies, modern amenities and rustic charm, the property around the home is well cared for. The homeowners maintained 2 nearby trails, installed and maintained a small swimming pond with boat, floating deck, and even have complete an outdoor bed and bath tub, which can be enjoyed with any interruption free with individual screens. It definitely lives up to the romantic getaway part. My family was happy to get to make use of the home on the cool nights we stayed, got to enjoy the trails, and were grateful to be able to makes use of a fire pit by the pond on two of the chilly evenings. Beautiful location, interesting guest house

3 adults enjoyed the space for two nights, very comfortable and clean. We did feel a little abandoned in the woods since there was no cell coverage once we were up there and we arrived just before dark. There was no one on the grounds though we spoke to the caretaker as we were on our way from Eureka to the guest house. Once we found the cottage, down a narrow dark wooded road, unpaved but very drivable in our ordinary car, we were fine. We were not tempted by the pond, though I'm sure fans of fresh water lakes would be. WiFi works well so wifi calls worked with our T-Mobile phones.

Beautiful location up a steep curvy road and down a steep curvy driveway.

The hosts are very friendly with a European sense of hospitality. There is a lot of art and creativity throughout the guesthouse and on the property. Whimsical and tasteful. Gorgeous evergreen setting with gardens and a pond with a dock-many places to sit, stroll and be quiet. Stretching and yoga poses on the lawn really helped my tight hamstring. Make sure you bring in your own food for a few days before you drive in. Itā€™s 30 minutes to a store. Our hosts gave is a quart of freak milk for coffee in the morning and there was a bottle of wine waiting for us in the house. Lovely experience all around. Definitely visit and say hello to Phil and Jeannie.

Much needed weekend getaway

We had the best time! The property is gorgeous, the cottage is quaint and the hosts Phil & Jeannie are LOVELY!! It was about a 6 hour drive for us, but so well worth it for the time we had to enjoy one another and reconnect (not to mention it was a beautiful drive!) We will definitely be back to visit our new friends in Kneeland!!

We loved our stay here. Itā€™s the real Humboldt experience. It was relaxing and recharging. Itā€™s not for everyone though. It is not close to anything. If you are looking to get away from it all, this place is the capitol of the middle of nowhere. It was the perfect setting for us. Bring groceries and plan of cooking some great meals. The kitchen is fully furnished. Itā€™s breathtakingly beautiful and very private. Phil is a gracious host, making himself as available as you need, while giving you plenty of privacy. PS we love the gnome village.
