The Historic Shankle Ranch, including an airstrip and hanger for their Stearman J-5 and Lockheed Sirus, was built in 1930 by Dutch & Joan Shankle, both prominent national aviators and in the Arizona Aviation Hall of Fame. While the airstrip, hanger, and planes are gone, what remains is a serene, beautiful, gated historic ranch home with gorgeous views of Mt. Wrightston, hiking and birding along the Santa Cruz River, minutes from spas, golf, tennis, and the Historic Village of Tubac, AZ “Where Art & History Meet", and 2021 and 2022 winner of USA Today 10Best "Best Small Town Arts Scene". Tubac offers numerous art galleries, quaint shops, fantastic restaurants, live music, and an opportunity to explore the history of Southern Arizona at the Tubac Presidio State Historic Park and the Tumacacori National Historic Park. Tubac, AZ is truly the greatest hidden gem in the Southwest!

Our extended family, ranging in age from 7 months to 80 years, enjoyed the week after Christmas at this unique property. The house is amazing, with two wings of spacious bedrooms on either side of the pool area, which are connected by the eat-in kitchen, dining room and spacious living room. The house is furnished with many antiques, the furniture is funky and comfortable, and the kitchen is well stocked - all on a beautiful piece of property with spectacular Mountain View’s. The photos on the site are accurate. The location is very private and feels remote despite being close to a walkable neighborhood and a short drive to Tubac, the Mission and the Anza Trail, lots of restaurants, and Abe’s bar, which everybody loved. Our only disappointment was that the pool was not heated (which we would have realized if we had read more carefully) and despite some warm days, the water was too cold to swim. The bravest of us did take the plunge after going for a run or before jumping in the hot tub. We also made use of the fireplaces, one of which is outdoors. Shelley & Sarah were great hosts and we loved staying at their place.

One of the loveliest places I've ever stayed (and I've traveled worldwide). This was for a girls' getaway birthday party and there was so much room for eight of us to spread out. The views were magical, cleanliness impeccable, beds comfortable, kitchen fully equipped, hosts accommodating...what more can I say other than I wish we'd stayed longer.

Perfect for a large family gathering

We stayed at Shankle with all the extended family in tow, and ended up with all three properties on site for a nearby wedding. It was perfect! Enough room to prepare food, socialize, relax, enjoy, and the view was amazing! We fell in love with the property and would recommend it highly.

Wonderful family reunion weekend!

We celebrated our father's 90th birthday and our parents' 65th wedding anniversary at Shankle Ranch. We rented the main house and the Tree House. There were 15 of us, ages ranging from 26 to 90. The house had everything we needed - rooms, space, great kitchen stocked with everything for our group size, pool, pool table, yoga mats and small weights, lawn games and board games, pool towels, etc. We cooked in 3 nights and had lovely dinners on the patio. Check in and out went smoothly. Views were amazing!

Incredible property. One of the best places I have stayed. It's on the older side but drilping with charm. Would stay here 100 times over.

Picturesque Tranquility

Our group has gathered at Shankle Ranch a number of times now, because it is amazing. It's difficult to put the gracious, gentle, relaxed beauty of the place into words. The hosts, Sherry and Sarah, are the epitome of genuine kindness and hospitality, and the land, sky, and guest ranch itself are absolutely gorgeous. It is a healing place to be.

Amazing Place

We were looking for a place to bring in family for our mom's 80th birthday. We wanted something with character and more than just a house. This ranch has history and charm and is the perfect place to get away, relax and explore. Sherry and Sarah are great hosts and they take great pride in their property. This isn't just a rental to them, it is a place they love and want to share the history and experience with everyone that stays there.

Family birthday celebration

The Historic Shankle Ranch house is awesome. It has great character and worked very well for our family group (12 persons total) in celebrating multiple birthdays. We enjoyed the country-type setting, the spacious living room, very nice areas outside, and the fireplaces (with firewood included). The host was very easy to work with. We enjoyed our stay immensely and highly recommend this property.

Family Retreat

Host met us at the property and gave us a full tour. Property lacks nothing. Great retreat for the family while attending a wedding celebration in Tubac. Views are stunning. We saw deer and a bobcat! My favorite memory will be early morning sitting in the great room with the fireplace roaring, a good book and a hot cup of coffee.

Stunning!

We rented the Shankle Ranch property for our wedding weekend, hosting only close family and friends. The property was a perfect home base, close to the venue Agua Linda Farm and Tubac shops & restaurants. Everything you could possibly need for a relaxing getaway was included and the hosts were friendly and accommodating. Highly recommended.

Tubac Family Vacay

This property is SO special! We loved every minute of our time there. The owner was wonderful and took time to tell us about the property. We walked around the large ranch with a pond and enjoyed the pool and hot tub, watched the sunrise over the mountains. There was a deer and her 2 fawns that would visit each day.

There aren’t enough words!

We were in Tubac for several days to celebrate the 70th birthday of my husband and his twin sister, who lives nearby. We needed a place for our family to gather (our 3 grown children and 3 grandchildren, so 8 adults and 3 young kiddos) that would provide ample space, proximity to the other twin and her gang, proximity to the local activities, and some fun on-site amenities. Well, all boxes were checked off, and so many glowing words could describe the Shankle Ranch, but the most-encompassing one, for us, is PERFECT on all fronts. From the idyllic and stunning setting (the site photos are lovely but the place is even more beautiful "in person") to the expansive indoor spaces to the ideal-for-all pool to the magic that is felt once going through the gates, we could not have been happier. We have all left with memories to cherish. Among them, our grandchildren will certainly be talking about feeding the ducks and orphaned calves for a long time! In summary, the ranch was, hands down, the best property for our family to hold our very important celebration together. And on the logistics side of things, our communications with both Sarah and Sherry were excellent. Such a pleasure. We will return...maybe for the 75th, if not before!

Family Reunion

This was the perfect property for our family reunion. The ranch has so many bedrooms and so much space. Everyone was able to spread out and find their quiet time too. The workout room downstairs was a real bonus. The outdoor area is beautiful and amazing for walking and relaxing. The pool was great. This is a real gem in the heart of magical Tubac.
