Lake Michigan Beachhouse On 100 Feet Of Gorgeous Sand

We are horribly sad that the three families staying in our home took no responsibility for the damage done to our property. Due to a cleaning crew in 2015 that did not properly clean or report damage to our house, we unfortunately allowed this family to stay with us again in 2016. The carpet had been cleaned at the end of the season last year, and these families were the first renters in 2016 and left black marks from dirt and sand all over the carpet; we have pictures to document the damage. Additional carpet stains were found in the 2nd floor bedroom next to the bed from spilled wine or coffee. Someone from their party spilled a sticky drink on a chair that upholstery cleaning could not completely get out because it soaked down to the lining of the chair and then sat there until the cleaning woman discovered it while vacuuming under the cushions. They took flannel sheets to the beach which are now ruined because of the sand embedded in them even after being washed three time with bleach. Pillows were missing. Sheets had to be washed two and three times because they were so soiled. Someone vomited and left the towels piled up in the laundry room. A bunch of dirty sheets and blankets were stacked up in the living room next to the stereo. Our cleaning woman, who cleans other homes on our street and came highly recommended, reported never seeing such a filthy house in all her years of cleaning. She stayed three and a half hours longer than usual and still took more laundry home to rewash. We found an empty vodka bottle hidden in the basement and Budweiser cans in the shrubs; our two subsequent renters did not have preteens or teens in their party. In 15 years of renting our two properties, we have never NOT refunded a renter's security deposit. In this case, the bills from carpet cleaning, upholstery cleaning, supplemental cleaning fees and new flannel sheets totaled $417. We refunded the balance despite more than a dozen other damages or missing items including $375 in septic and plumbing fees following their visit. Sadly, this family has taken no responsibility for the damage to our home despite admitting they "may have tracked in a little sand." Our four other weeks of renters were terrific and were returned 100% of their security deposit. This is a sad example of why homeowners need to have a security deposit since many people have utter disregard for other people's property.
