George Washington Slept Here!

Welcome to Travelers Rest, a historic twenty-three acre farm located in scenic King and Queen County, Virginia. As the name suggests, travelers and tobacco rollers would often stop to refresh themselves, as well as their horses, from the stream that flows at the foot of the hill. Even one of our very own founding fathers himself, George Washington, would stop and rest here on his travels to and from his home at Mount Vernon and Williamsburg - now you can do the same!

You'll be staying in our cozy, dormer-windowed, story-and-a-half house, which was first built in 1760 by a wealthy trader turned farmer named Gregory Baylor. After decades of neglect in the late 1800s, the home collapsed. This left the house in a ruinous state with only one-half standing beside a pile of bricks that had once formed the other half. Thankfully, some of the original woodwork survived and still remains in good condition to this day.

THIS IS A WORKING HORSE FARM, horses will be behind electric fencing, dogs are all to friendly and sociable thanks to all the guest who bring their dogs, sometimes it looks more like a fun DOG PARK. Our domestic geese are also friendly and sometimes waddle through the yard.

The house has since been beautifully renovated without losing any of its historical charm. Both bedrooms are upstairs; the master bedroom has a king sized bed with an attached two door bathroom for guest access, while across the hall is the guest bedroom which has two twin sized beds. Downstairs has a full kitchen, a second bathroom, a laundry and a living room. If necessary, the couch in the living room pulls out into a queen sized bed. The farmhouse itself comfortably accommodates four guests, but can fit up to six.

The full kitchen includes a refrigerator, stovetop oven, microwave, toaster oven, DE'LONGHI coffee maker (your Starbucks in the country), and your basic dish and silverware.

Indoor amenities include: heating and air, an indoor fire place, Wifi, a booklet containing information about local attractions, some classic board games and a TV and DVD player along with access to Netflix located in the living room.

Outdoor amenities include: outdoor patio furniture, fire pit, hammocks, small charcoal grill, and a fresh water pond for fishing.

We offer wonderful add-on experiences, too: Horseback riding, Wreathmaking/Floral Design Classes, and a Hands-on Farm Tour! Ask us for details.

So why not stop and take a break from your busy life to watch the birds skirt across the fields or count the geese that drift leisurely atop the water? I promise that after you take a moment to breathe in the fresh air, you'll fall in love with this place, just like we did!

Love love love this place!

We were in town for a conference and did not get to spend as much time at the property as we’d have liked. But the quiet, the views, the pond, the horses, the historical house and the hospitality of the owner are all everything we could have asked for in a quiet getaway. We will definitely be back!

Magnificent and majestic

Beautiful peaceful property and home as far as our eyes could see. A slice of paradise filled with history, horses dogs, hummingbirds and geese. We fished in the pond and lost count on how many blue gill and bass we caught. Agnes is an amazing host and made us feel like family. We walked the grounds always joined by her three sweet pups and happy friendly horses. We did not want to l leave and we hope to return one day. We cherish our fond memories. Travelers Rest is a diamond in the ruff.

Perfect place to reset

I elected to take my little boy and I out to the countryside for a quick two day trip from DC to start the new year off right. It did exactly what I had hoped — offered us downtime away from the city, stunning views, a chance to romp around outside, meet sweet horses and dogs, explore, and just have fun. The history of the house is awesome. The king bed is so comfortable that I went online to try and replicate some of it once I got home. There is a room perfect for little ones, and my guy loved playing with the wooden trucks. Thank you for the wonderful stay, great memories. We hope to return soon!

Just Breath!

Live near DC. The cars weaving in out on 95 and 66, horns honking when there is no where to go.... felt like I was suffocating and knew I needed some peace and quiet Took, by mistake but in a good way, almost all back toads. When my daughter and I reached our destination, we smiled and sighed. Warm welcome from AgnĆØs and furry friends. Once we entered our "George was here" retreat, we did not leave. House is a little hard to navigate if you have any physical disabilities and not all the comforts of home but pretty close. The magic moment, which turned into hours, was sitting out back surrounded in every direction , by the most amazing, serene backdrop created by mother nature and the years of hard work of AgnĆØs and her family. The geese had a parade my way and gave quite a musical performance. The horses came up to the fence and definitely smiled at me. It is so quiet, you can hear the pecans drop to the ground from their tree. Made me realize how crazy our lives are. You need to remind yourself to just breath and appreciate the real treasures. Use all your senses!

Great relaxing weekend on the farm

We had such a wonderful weekend here. The property is amazing with horses and dogs running around, our dogs were loving the open space! Agnes is a wonderful host and was there if we needed anything, which we didn't. The house is very cutely decorated with old world charm and very comfortable for the three of us and 2 dogs. Thank you for a great time and look forward to staying with you again.

Had a fantastic stay on the farm! So scenic and relaxing. Host was super-friendly and helpful (and the dogs were great, too!). Wish we could've stayed a couple more days and gotten a horseback ride in. Highly recommended!

Perfect farm experience getaway

This was our first trip in over a year, traveling with 2 young kids. We were looking for a farm experience for our kids having been bundled up in the city for a long time, and this was just the perfect getaway. Agnes was extremely hospitable and her animals were just wonderful. The kids has a blast playing with the dogs, riding and feeding horses, riding the tractor, going zip-lining in the barn and swinging on the various swings. They also got the chance to do some art work by building a nest with Agnes. All in all it was the ideal, relaxing break the family needed. Hope to come back at some point in the future.

Perfect Getaway

My friends and I ā€œescapedā€ COVID for a bit, and we chose a perfect location! I brought my pup pup, Lucy, to this dog friendly retreat. She enjoyed playing with the resident dogs and ā€œmeetingā€ the horses. We took long walks, watched the riding lessons, spent time with the owner, and enjoyed the beautiful sunrises/sunsets!

Great Country Setting!

If your looking for a rustic farm to retreat to from the hustle & bustle of a long day of enjoying all the area has to offer, then this is the place for you! The home is true to the time period as mentioned. Beautiful acreage for just relaxing & taking in the scenic view. I gave it 4 stars out of 5 not because I felt anything was done wrong. There were just a couple of things that I thought could use some updating. We were there in the summer. The air-conditioning for that time of year was a little challenging to keep it cooled at times. But all units did work. The big beautiful wooden front door inside the house couldn’t be opened. So you had to walk out the back door around the house to get to the front which had awesome views of the horses in the pastures. I’m sure because of the age & history of the house these kind of repairs need special TLC. But it would’ve been nice to enjoy the view from the door on that side of the house. The windows in the living room are beautiful big large windows. It would be nice to take advantage of the views they have. If the bushes were to be cut back some that would allow a view from those windows. Again, this is just my way of looking at it. Not trying to say one way is right or wrong. Agnes is very welcoming and kind and friendly! She made us feel right at home! She was very respectful of our privacy while we were there! And was very available if we needed anything at any time. Thank you Agnes!!! We wish you all the best in future ventures!

Historic charm & horses

We used Traveler's Rest as a launch for area historic sites: it's almost equi-distant from Wiliamsburg/Yorktown/Jamestown, Mt Vernon, and Monticello. A bonus was finding a house w/a history and horses! It's on the same road as the area library and only 6 miles from a grocery. Agnes was raised w/horses, and her comfort around them and knowledge about them is evident. She took my daughter on a couple trail rides, infecting her with the desire to ride more. If you appreciate rural living, big dogs, horses, rustic old houses, and don't mind getting a little dirty (we mucked stalls for fun :-), its a lovely retreat.

We loved our stay and the hospitality of Agnes and her family.

Easy to find if you put the correct address in your GPS or just call up goggle maps on your phone. Responds from the owner were quick and the property is a true gem for a quiet get away. We visited with our daughter and three granddaughters. Our granddaughters really loved the horses, friendly great Danes, geese, ducks, pond, Hummingbird feeder, games left for quests, and most everything except the really warm mid-day weather. We used that time to explore around the local area attractions in the air conditioned car. The house has A/C, but it was a heavy heat load with little ones that forget to keep doors closed. Temps of over 100 degs on two of the days we visited. This is a working horse farm, but the owners were very good hosts. They even let this old guy carry the fishing gear and kids to the pond in their "gator". Above and beyond the normal. Their have maintained the old house very well and keep it clean and have used high quality towels and linen for the extra nice touch. The only improvement for us in particular would to make it a little more accessible with the installation of handicap height toilets or at least one toilet. We knew the toilet heights before coming, but decided the place was worth the extra effort to bring a seat elevator pad. (althogh I forgot to bring it). Overall it was a great time away from the busy city. We never had the TV on during our stay, but of course had great cell phone coverage and internet available with the furnished WIFI. Another extra we appreciate. We would love returning in the fall or spring. The Lange and Tietze families.

Beautiful and peaceful country home

This home was perfect! Well stocked with towels and linens. The beds were comfortable and cozy. The grounds were beautiful and loved having the friendly horses come over and visit. Siting outside on the well manicured lawn enjoying coffee was pure zen. The hosts were kind and gracious but also gave us our space. Everything was as described!!! We really enjoyed our stay and cannot wait to come back!

Weekend Family Retreat Exceeded Expectations

Our little family of five was in need of silence and solitude after a busy season of work and family life. We were so excited about all this little farm had to offer, and expected to get some great rest and spend at least one full day (out of our 3 full days we reserved) completely on the farm. Upon arrival we immediately knew this little place was quite special. It didn't take us long to settle in and feel at home in the well-kept and inviting cottage. The view out our bedroom window was stunning, the linens and beds were so cozy, and the absolute silence of being so far from the road made for wonderful sleep each night. Cooking in the little kitchen was an adventure but oh so fun. We made everything from breakfast scones in the morning to skirt steak in the evenings. Throughout each day we "busied" ourselves with reading, walking the property, helping out at the barn, getting horseback lessons, playing games, cooking, playing games, and napping. We didn't leave the property once until we checked out. Agnes and her family are so hospitable, and the farm and cottage are so lovely. We will most certainly be making another trip out to Traveller's Rest!

Serene beauty

This unique historic stop was well worth it. Our hostess was there when needed without being intrusive. The historic home is filled with amenities that leave you needing nothing else. Our daughter's enjoyed horse back riding and spending the day at Horse camp. They are still talking about the fun they had and can't wait to return next year.

Amazing place in beautiful setting

We absolutely loved our stay at Travellers Rest Farm. Agnes and Charlotte were wonderful and my kids took a real shine to them. They also adored the horses and dogs, and enjoyed helping in the stables. The house was very cosy and had everything you need, including toys, kitchen utensils, essential food items, laundry facilities, DVDs, wifi, outdoor seating, toilettery samples etc. It was a 45 minute drive from Richmond, which has a lot to offer, or you could stay at the farm and enjoy the peace! We would love to come back sometime!
