A well-crafted apartment in the quiet & solace of surrounding woods, yet within 8 to 10 minutes drive from grocery stores, or airport, and only 3 miles from the University of Alaska Fairbanks. This is a 2 bedroom, 1 bath luxury suite of rooms, private & perfect for 4 people if they are 2 couples or a family. It is the whole Separate ground floor of the house, 800 sq ft. This property is at the same location as one other smaller apartment suite, # 1523206, on the same 3 acres of property in the other house. In addition, this is a fantastic location to see the auroras, when they are active, as they arc right over the property, when it is clear out and the aurora activity is moderate. We will make sure your stay is very comfortable, and provide you with the information you need, in order to book activities or tour around town and the area.

Comfort in a cold place

Carol and Les have clearly put a lot of thought into providing a comfortable stay for all their guests. They have thought of everything, the whole process was smooth and easy, and even things we didn’t think of were there and ready for us. If you wanna come up and experience, Fairbanks in the winter, I highly recommend you book this chalet.

Great hosts, very cozy

It was a great, cozy little place, close to the airport and stores. The hosts were very helpful and had a plate of cookies waiting for us. Clean. Comfortable beds. Easy check out! Will definitely return to this spot!

Quiet, clean and cozy

My sister, daughter and i enjoyed the quiet location as we were on the last 3 days of our Alaskan journey. The hosts were very helpful and provided everything we needed to feel at home.

Recent stay

We loved the friendliness of property owners and are thankful for all of their help and information they shared. Les shared some of his Alaska pioneer legacy and is the real deal. We were greeted with homemade cookies that Carol made which were delicious I might add 😊 We would highly recommend this place. It was quite comfy and clean and well stocked. Great couple, so glad we met!!

You are in the basement of the chalet. 2 queen bedrooms is a stretch! One full bedroom and a bed, on the floor in what was like a utility closet. No air conditioning or circulation. They had one box fan and we went and bought another. Place was very clean and owners were nice. Pictures VERY WELL! Small family room and kitchen. Bathroom is outside of the master bedroom (hall), and the “second” bedroom is off the master.

Lives up to the description and more

Carol and Les have a fabulously located property. Easy to get to from Fairbanks (airport, university, restaurants and shopping). The two of them are such hospitable people giving is lots of options for exploring even with the rainy weather. The chalet is very comfortable with every amenity you can imagine. Thank you Carol and Les for giving us the opportunity to see Fairbanks as a “local”.

Home away from home

We could not ask for a better place or hosts. The reviews are truly accurate in describing what a lovely couple Carol and Les are and how incredibly hospitable they are. The house is cozy, clean and comfortable. We were welcomed with the most delicious homemade cookies, fresh flowers and a locally made lavendar soap. So nice to walk in to such care. Carol went above and beyond to make our stay comfortable and more enjoyable. Thank you so much and we will be back!

Slice of heaven

From the moment I booked the stay Carol gave me all the info I needed from checkin, do’s and don'ts to check out. Provided information about the area and even had a plate of “welcome” cookies for me. As I was in Fairbanks for work the property was just what I needed, clean, comfortable, quiet with all the amenities of home in a great location. I will be back😎

Great Fairbanks home base

Nice rooms in easy access to Fairbanks activities. They were very helpful at letting us know great activities that suited us perfectly. And the best cookies ever!

January visit.

Carol’s property was clean and very well stocked. We visited in January with plenty of snow on the roads. Carol and Les kept the property plowed and easy to navigate. Inside, there were plenty of extra blankets, quality kitchen utensils for cooking and even extra parkas if your group needed them. When we return to Fairbanks we plan to stay with Carol again.

A slice of heaven!

Carol and Les were fantastic hosts. They gave us access to the on site cameras to help us spot the active Auroras. We were also given local knowledge of the best activities. This property is located on the edge of town, away from the city light pollution, which makes it great to view the Auroras. It is also extremely quiet and peaceful. We will definitely stay here again when we return to Fairbanks.

Four guys working 14 hours a day for 2 weeks. Rooms were great. Had enough room for mattresses we brought for the work contract. Carol and Les are very accommodating and made our stay very comfortable. We will be back renting both properties if available next year. Felt like home and enjoyed there company.

We booked because of the reviews about Carol

Myself and two friends set about to travel to Fairbanks to see the northern lights. We reviewed many listings but the reviews about Carol and Les were outstanding - and were 100% on point. Warm, homemade cookies awaited us when we arrived. Staying in the apartment below their home was almost like staying in their home. There were all of the cooking utensils, spices, condiments, etc that you would have in your own home - probably more! There was aluminum foil, ziplocs, etc which almost is never found in a vrbo. Prior to our trip Carol was extremely helpful about planning our things to do. While we were there she gave us guidance and recommendations as well. Our trip could not have been more perfect and I believe it had a lot to do with Carol and Wes. I will be back in the summertime, and have already recommended this property to friends.

Just like being at home!

We had a wonderful time spending a week at Aspen Woods, we honestly couldn’t have asked for a better place to stay. Location and hosts were perfect! We had no plans while there, just enjoyed the scenery one day at a time. Our daughter has severe food allergies and the convenience of have all kitchen necessities makes our vacation much more enjoyable

More than we asked for!

Host was so welcoming, and chalet was more than well-equipped and very comfortable. Even before we arrived, we received helpful information and links to every imaginable area attraction. We were there to catch the aurora, and host shared live camera app, allowing us to remain inside and warm while waiting for activity to show! Visible right on property! Host has 2 rentals on property. Chalet shares main building with host’s home, which is the story above chalet.

Able to take advantage of all winter activities in Fairbanks

We had a great time. Very friendly hosts. She recommended great businesses where we experienced dog sledding, reindeer ranch, Chena Hot Springs, and snowmobiling. It snowed 5 nights so we did not have a great chance to see the northern lights. The 2 nights that were available the lights were not as bright as some of the pictures. I guess that means we have to come back...

Les & Carol Smallwood, have been residents in Fairbanks, Alaska, for over 34 years. This home you'd be staying at has been built by Les. The year purchased just indicates the year we purchased the piece of land it sits on. Located among aspen and spruce trees, the apartment suite is on the lower level and is newly remodeled. We have one dog (friendly, once she meets you). We love our location and privacy and hope you'll consider staying with us. We look forward to making your stay memorable.

Our place is Not located in Ester, it is located only 3 miles from the University of Alaska Fairbanks, (UAF) on the West side of town in Fairbanks. This property is a total of 3 acres that was purchased by Les Smallwood in 1991, and then he began the process of clearing the woods and building the house you see today on it. We picked this part of town because it is near the University, doesn't have a lot of commercial business cluttering and hiding the natural beauty of the area, it is private and quiet, and it is still very close and convenient to everything in town. It is also located within the best schools' districts in the city, ensuring that our kids would go to the best public schools available.

Living with woods all around means privacy, and that you may get visits from the local moose. The air is fresh, and the water tastes good right out of the faucet, no filtering needed. If you are here in the Summer, the days are long and beautiful. In the Winter, the auroras are clear and strong, without any city light pollution.
VIDEO of the AURORAS during an exceptional evening on Sept 28, 2017, by my husband, Les Smallwood, looking towards the house, RIGHT OVER THE VRBO. Of course, the auroras raged way longer than the short video represented here. It is typical when there is a night of high activity, on clear nights that the auroras can be seen right outside the door, if you just walk out and look up. Sometimes you have to look North, but most of the time, they arc right over the house. Enjoy this short video.
